4 CURRENT SITUATION CURRENT SITUATION The Art Institute of Tampa is a creative learning institution established in 2004 and located on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and North Himes Avenue. The institute offers degrees in Digital Filmmaking & Video Production, Digital Photography, Game Art & Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Media Arts & Animation, Visual Effects & Motion Graphics and Web Design & Interactive Media. It is a branch of the Miami International University of Art & Design and one of more than 45 Art Institutes located through out North America. The Institute also includes the International Culinary School (ICS), which offers diplomas, certificates and degrees in Baking & Pastry, Culinary Management and Culinary Arts, among others. The ICS also operates a student-run restaurant that is open to the public. The Art Institute of Tampa shares it s compus with South University including the library, and the atrium. The building is located in a business complex was built in 1986 it concrete structure measures approximately about 102,000 square feet. GOALS & MISSION: Mission Statement Miami International University of Art & Design is a multi-campus, career-oriented institution that provides students with academic preparation and practical skills through programs in the applied arts and design industries. The institution prepares its undergraduate students for entry-level positions and its graduate students for advancement in their chosen fields. The University is dedicated to fostering a culture that encourages creativity, research, and learning-centered endeavors. Institutional Goals 1. To provide students at all degree levels with the theory, knowledge, and skills appropriate to their disciplines, including an undergraduate grounding in foundational studies and general education. 2. To help students identify their career goals and develop the professional skills to achieve them. 3. To use a continuous quality improvement process to enhance student learning and University success. 4. To recruit and retain qualified faculty with the appropriate academic credentials and professional experience to promote a learning-centered environment. 5. To provide administrative and educational support services to foster a safe, comfortable, and engaging environment for a diverse institutional population. Page 4 of 30 Current Situation
5 PROJECT OVERVIEW AREAS OF OPPORTUNITY 1. Messaging: The audit has revealed inconsistent visual messaging throughout the campus. Typefaces used, are both bold and formal in a setting that is intended to be inviting and creative. 2. Materials: The materials used throughout the environment are inconsistent. Over five materials were used to create the signage through out the campus. A consistent use of material would improve the overall message being communicated to the users of the space. 3. Efficiency: There are an average of four signs per room. This clutter is at odds with the engaging environment goal at the institution. A reduction in signage would increase engagement with the campus environment. 4. Exterior: It has been observed that there is limited wayfinding signage in the exterior and interior of the campus. This has caused much confusion for the users of the environment as the ethnographic studies have revealed. Current Situation Page 5 of 30
6 DESIGN APPROACH The environment being proposed is that of an urban design studio. The nature of an urban design studio is bold, welcoming, inspiring, yet professional all at the same time. The mission of the institution is to produce adept creative minds for the business world; this approach allows for clarity and focus for the student mind. This approach ties into the campus mission by cultivating an open environment that emphasizes on simplicity and professionalism. The goal of this approach is to allow those who come into contact with the environment to think dynamically with a strategic focus. The simple nature of the messaging and visual systems in the environment will passively engage the audience, allowing creative thoughts to flourish. A new environment on campus will be accessible to many different users to allow for easy movement throughout the building. The intended effect of the environment is to be bold yet simple with its messaging to the user. The atmosphere should allow people to be inspired and not weighed down by the frustration of finding their destination. Page 6 of 30 Design Approach
7 TYPOGRAPHY / COLOR TYPOGRAPHY ADA STATEMENT COLOR PALETTE Helvetica The typeface Helvetica will be used for two reasons. The first is in relation to the approach; the environment requires creative yet professional messaging throughout the environment. The colors in conjunction with this typeface will provide an approach in line with the campus branding and mission. The secondary purpose for using this typeface is to keep in line with the federal ADA guidelines. In developing an environmental graphics program for The Art Institute of Tampa, provisions of the American with Disabilities Act of 2010 affecting environmental graphic design have been incorporated with the upmost professional judgment. Please note some provisions of the Act are subject to interpretation. The campus is an environment with a heavy traffic flow of creativity. The colors being used will help to cultivate the creativity in a purposeful direction and enhance the environment s affect on the individuals that use it. These colors help to enhance the approach as there is much movement in the environment helpful colors that correlate to the world outside such as traffic lights have a subtle and subconscious affect of the minds of the individuals that use the environment. 8 DESIGN APPROACH MATERIALS Acrylic is a very versatile material and very adaptable to any environment. In the proposed environment the new material will serve as an adjustable conduit for simple messaging. This material will do well to reflect the proposed atmosphere. Black carpeting will be used in the new environment. Black flooring can make an area appear more open, especially in contrast to bright walls. This will help the users of the environment focus on what is eye level with them such as wayfinding elements and signage. Vinyl is another flexible material and when used in this proposed environment it will bring attention to the campus from a distance and guide users throughout the building. Aluminum as a material will give off a sleek clean edge to the environment. This material will enhance the professional facet of the environment. With targeted application throughout the campus this material can enhance the creative drive of the individuals who use the campus. Glass will be used throughout the campus to further enhance the ease of movement throughout the environment. The material will help users feel more welcome into more spaces throughout the campus.
