12 National Guidelines Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (NHMRC, 2007) Section 2: Management of Research Data & Primary Materials Each institution must have a policy on the retention of materials and research data. It is important that institutions acknowledge their continuing role in the management of research material and data.

13 Funding bodies Australian Research Council Discovery Grant requirements A Researchers and institutions have an obligation to care for and maintain research data in accordance with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2007). The ARC considers data management planning an important part of the responsible conduct of research and strongly encourages the depositing of data arising from a Project in an appropriate publically accessible subject and/or institutional repository. Researchers are now required as part of the application process for National Competitive Grants Program funding to outline how they plan to manage research data arising from ARC-funded research. Outline plans for the management of data produced as a result of the proposed research, including but not limited to storage, access and re-use arrangements The Final Report must outline how data arising from the Project have been made publicly accessible where appropriate.

14 Publishers Nature An inherent principle of publication is that others should be able to replicate and build upon the authors' published claims. Therefore, a condition of publication in a Nature journal is that authors are required to make materials, data and associated protocols promptly available to readers without undue qualifications

15 Publishers Public Library of Science (PLOS) PLOS journals require authors to make all data underlying the findings described in their manuscript fully available without restriction, with rare exception.

17 Collaboration and verification The emerging academic culture values collaborations, including the sharing and reuse of research data. This is becoming increasingly important for researchers to be involved in. Verification of research results is also becoming a significant issue in academic research fields and to do this, good access to data is required. The Retraction Watch blog often reports on the retraction of papers when data could not be verified.

Intellectual Property considerations How will you retain your data and for how long? What ethical considerations are relevant? asking for consent Set up documentation at this stage
