3 Open access research data H2020 Open access to research data refers to the right to access and re-use digital research data under the terms and conditions set out in the Grant Agreement. Openly accessible research data can typically be accessed, mined, exploited, reproduced and disseminated free of charge for the user. 4 Open Research Data Pilot All project proposals submitted to 'Research and Innovation actions' as well as 'Innovation actions' should include a section on research data management. All others : it is recommended to include a general outline of your data management policy in the proposal. Mention University s policy on data management (effective since 17 / 3 /2015)!!

5 Open Research Data Pilot Opt out option for confidentiality or security obligations or protection of personal data Opt in : participate on a voluntary basis Costs relating to the implementation of the pilot will be reimbursed. Specific technical and professional support services will also be provided.????

6 Multi-beneficiary General G.A Open access to research data (a) deposit in a research data repository and take measures to make it possible for third parties to access, mine, exploit, reproduce and disseminate free of charge for any user the following: (i) the data, including associated metadata, needed to validate the results presented in scientific publications as soon as possible; (ii) other data, including associated metadata, as specified and within the deadlines laid down in the data management plan (see Annex 1); (b) provide information via the repository about tools and instruments at the disposal of the beneficiaries and necessary for validating the results (and where possible provide the tools and instruments themselves).

7 What is a data management plan? A data management plan is a document outlining how research data will be handled during a research project, and after it is completed, describing what data will be collected / generated and following what methodology and standards, whether and how this data will be shared and/or made open, and how it will be curated and preserved. What standards will be used? How will this data be exploited and/or shared/made accessible for verification and reuse? If data cannot be made available, explain why. How will this data be curated and preserved? Mention full DMP as a deliverable Initial Term (< month 6)

12 Ethics issues : personal data Box 4 : Does your research involve personal data collection and/or processing? Yes? Provide : Details of the data safety procedures (compliance with privacy by design and protection of privacy/confidentiality). Details of procedures for data collection, storage, protection, retention, transfer if any, destruction or re-use. Explicit confirmation of compliance with national and EU legislation

13 FP7 Collaborative Project AThEME AThEME Description of Work (DoW): the consortium partners will obtain from the data controller of their institution written confirmations for the technical data protection procedures (data collection, storage, protection, retention and destruction) and confirmation that these comply with national and EU legislation framework and privacy/confidentiality measures

14 Interpretation in the case of AThEME: 1. Cover letter = written confirmation (signed by each partner individually) 2. Annex A = technical information security policy VRE (UB Leiden to be used by all partners in AThEME consortium) 3. Annex B = individual summary of data procedures on collection, storage, protection, retention and destruction

15 The EC was pleased with the 17 individual written confirmations but we felt that this didn t tell the whole story, which is why we also asked our partners to describe their data procedures on the project level (i.e. compile a DMP for AThEME as a whole): AThEME DMP
