1 The Stratford University Times News of the Falls Church Campus November 2015 Newsletter Office: Room 209, 2nd Floor South, Editor: John Thieman QUARTER FIVE AND NEW BEGINNINGS For many new students, the admission process began when they attended one of the several Stratford University open house programs. They met with admissions representatives, discussed their career plans and goals, learned of the graduation requirements and the expense of schooling with available financial assistance. They spoke with the directors of the departments in which they were interested and were given tours of its facilities. They heard representatives from the Learning Resource Center, Student Services and Career Services who told them of their continued support during their schooling. Finally, they learned of coming career fairs and notices of employer visits to the campus. The orientation session, pictured on the left, was the final step before new classes actually began. Classes had been selected, ID pictures taken and financial assistance had been identified. Everyone received instructions to use their personal school Moodle account for classwork, assignments, access account information and even register on-line. The first day of class arrived. Students were met by members of the staff and faculty who greeted them and offered assistance to locate their classrooms and answer their firstday questions. Class sizes varied from this smaller informal Health Sciences class taught by Dr. Hamida Hussein, pictured on the left, and the Business Research Methods class of Masters Degree students working on one of their special projects under Professor Afraa Bahrani below, to a larger class of IT students taught by Dr. Sheb Bishop on the right. The difference in classes allows instructors to lead the students using different teaching techniques best suited to their learning styles. While many started their career preparation this 5th Quarter, others were finishing their degree programs, planning for their job search with the Career Services Department and their graduation this coming June 2016.
2 The Stratford Online Campus OUR CLASSROOM IS THE WORLD could be the motto of the Stratford University Online Campus now centered at the Falls Church, Tysons Corner Campus. Online Campus Director Gina Rice-Holland has recently been joined by Dr. Golnoosh Hakimdavar who will complete the team as Online Campus Dean. Dr. Hakimdavar has specialized in Business Administration, Finance and Law. She has experience as an Instructor, and has worked as a Research Fellow, Director of Academic Development, Associate Dean and Campus Dean. Gina Rice-Holland said, We anticipate that Dr. Hakimdavar will help build our online student body. One of her many strengths is her ability to significantly increase enrollment via the establishment of a high standard of academia. Other members of the Online Campus team are: Bobby Marshall - Admissions Officer, Vicmar Paz - Student Development Officer, Matthew Sprouse - Online Associate Advisor, Arthur Williams - Student Accounts Officer and Shirelette Wilkins - Senior Administrative Assistant. ON-LINE TEACHER OF THE YEAR Dr. Neila Holland, faculty lead with the online Business Department has been nominated to receive Stratford University s Online Campus Teacher of the Year Award. According to Gina Rice-Holland, director of Stratford s online outreach, she was selected because, Her work has consistently shown, an unwavering focus and attention upon the needs of her students. While she sets high standards for each student, her positive impact can be seen by their comments which describe her influence as, caring and lifechanging. DR. HOLLAND S PAPER CITED BEST AT CONFERENCE Dr. Holland was invited to present the keynote address and a paper at the Fourth International Conference on Employment, Education and Entrepreneurship in Belgrade, Serbia this past October. Dr. Holland presented her paper entitled, T he Impact of Women s Businesses on the Economy, Employment and Overall Financial Wealth of Small Communities at a later session. 6 WHAT ADULT HEALTH NURSING MEANS Nursing Nurses students must develop many skills to effectively help the adults under their care with their daily needs. Nursing NSG 245 instructors Sue Gardella and Patricia Funcherss not only identify these skills, but insure they are understood and practiced; sometimes by assuming the role of the patient. Pictured below, practicing their skills on instructor Sue Gardella are students: Adelaide Asomaning, Francisca Bonney, Jonah Mateos and Mercy Gana. Patient expresses a need Moving patient in the bed All tucked in Sending the patient home Wheelchair is waiting Move completed Successful teamwork Homeward bound
7 HALLOWEEN... A Time of Surprises Who would have thought of the campus changes when Halloween approached. The registrar s office and personnel took on a new look, the appearance of culinary instructors changed, the International Student Office Staff assumed different personalities and there were many surprises everywhere; especially in Student Services which was voted 1st Place.
8 BE PREPARED Preparedness and safety is one of our ongoing concerns, said Campus Director Dr. Voytek Panas, especially when considering the numbers of students, faculty and staff present on the Stratford Falls Church Campus on any given day. We regularly evaluate many initiatives to insure the safety of everyone present on the campus. He continued, One of the most recent exercises was our Fire Alarm response practice. Those responsible for the safe exit of all personnel in their assigned area reported quick and complete evacuation in record time. We regularly evaluate our various procedures to insure complete security and safety for all. WINTER S COMING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT RAVE If we rely upon the wisdom of experienced Stratford employees and newest edition of The Farmer s Almanac, their predictions for this winter is more snow along the East Coast, and temperatures below the zero mark. More snow in the Washington Metro Area means more difficult driving and the possibility of delayed openings or early closings. Students, staff and faculty need to be informed of weather alerts affecting campus openings, closings and delayed classes. Stratford University has partnered with Rave Mobile Safety ( RAVE ) to deliver messages to currently enrolled Stratford University students, staff and faculty to their personal addresses, as well as their landline and cell phone free of charge, but it is important that everyone confirm their contact information is correct. To manage your account, please visit and login using your Stratford Account ( Hint: the same username and password as the portal and online learning platform - Moodle ). If you do not already have a username and password, please contact IT Support If you do not wish to receive alerts, please login to your account at click on the My Account tab, and delete your address under Contacts. Have a safe and enjoyable winter.
