1 RN- BSN Completion programs Please note that the information below was gathered in the Fall of 2012 so could be slightly different from what is listed below. This document gives you a sneak peek at different RN-BSN programs in MN and WI (private, public, online, hybrid, on-campus, full-time, part-time, etc.) These programs allow a student who is Licensed (or going to be licensed) as an RN to apply and potentially jump in to complete credits of nursing curriculum for their Bachelor s degree in Nursing (BSN). Contact Information for each school is listed at the top ( , phone, website, etc) so feel free to contact those folks about any specific questions you might have regarding their program and application process. (Note that the contact information may have changed slightly as well). Feel free to the Health Careers Advisor at nursingadvisor@nhcc.edu with any simple questions you may have. 2 Name of School: Bemidji State Contact Information: Sarah Tarutis- Website: Offered at Cambridge (Fridays), Duluth (Thursdays), and Bemidji (Wednesdays), offering it at Century starting Fall Hybrid program offered on campus 3 or 4 times per semester the rest is online. Full load-be there all day. Student can choose their location when they apply. Community Health experiences (clinical) can be arranged in a variety of sites as close to student s home as possible. Community Health interactions. No hospital rotations/clinical; just community health experiences. Public Health Certification + BSN when completed. 40 credits for BSN 33 credits in Nursing courses + 7 upper level - if came in with AA degree. 120 credits to graduate 40 of which need to be upper division. Nursing electives students can choose from for 7 upper division; could complete some of these before admitted to the Nursing program. (Those seven upper division could come from another 4 year college as well). See the website for courses that are recommended. Get the AA/MNTC!! Apply any timethere are caps (20 per cohort) but opened up cohorts in Spring 2013 for Cambridge and Duluth. Typically fill up. 1-2 years; Can go full or part time. Full time can get done in a year Admissions online for BSU. Then they can turn in the application for BSN. Once their licensed they could be accepted. Not specific GPA requirement, don t accept D grades. Could be accepted on provisional acceptance if finishing up RN program. None, if can get experience helpful but not needed. 9. 3 Name of School: Minnesota State University Mankato Contact Information: Kasi Johnson** Website: 30 credits 7 classes, all 4 credits completely online in any order except one course (Nursing Provider of Care Clinical 6 credits Capstone, some face to face time in home area, community health clinical time 90 clinical hours) Certified Public Health; Research, Family and Community Health, Leadership and Management 30 RN credits (Upper division), plus grad requirements (40 total to graduate but when transfer they auto get plenty of extra level Upper Division- so nursing is different!!) and generals; if no gens left they can take when they want. Option of how many credits or classes; majority who work full time, probably just 2 courses (offered Fall Summer Spring; Summer are 10 weeks) Complete the MNTC/AA, waive all of gen eds for the university; Diverse cultures if transfer more than 60 credits, this requirement is waived; Writing Intensive Requirement if transfer in more than 30 credits, one will be waived but would still need one additional writing intensive (ENGL1202 counts for this). Stats for goal 4! 7 steps to complete- Apply to university- Transfer evaluation 6-8 weeks (which needs to be included with Nursing app) CUM GPA of college credits done C or better in Nursing ***Current Reg Nurse. can t be accepted until passed NCLEX All applicants must have College Level Stats (or currently enrolled when apply) with a C- MATH1130 (a Psych stats would count) Deadlines in March and September; available online Fall and spring semesters; two tiers- tier 1 already completed Gen ed, priority 60 students (hopefully 80), tier 2 will grab from here if there are some spots left, those who have more of the gen eds completed but not all =more competitive, 3 starts instead of 2 and hopefully accepting 80 accept half who apply 3 semesters is the fastest; typically 3-4 semesters. If need to stop out won t lose spot. As soon as possible Don t look at experience- Generals done!

Ie MSN, Physical Therapy, MSN-Typically run through sister campus in Edina; primarily online need 2 years of Post BA work experience Family Nurse Practitioner Nurse Educator Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Most are employed but most need to earn degree to keep their job and it will offer them more opportunities down the road.

5 Name of School: Minnesota State University Moorhead Contact Information: Pam Kirk OR Barb Matthees ***Would be willing to come and chat with our students*** Pam could meet because she s in the cities Website: 100% online; clinical courses- include public health setting, working with families, true practice, independent not rigidly scheduled Public/community health, research focus, leadership/management, take what you ve got and bump it up a level; will learn from others working in the field 120 credits to graduate- 64 with RN degree + AA degree. 30 credits in Nursing, additional 10 upper level courses Complete the AA degree if possible, would take care of generals Accepting about 50 students for Fall 2013; discussing adding 25 more; January start had 84 qualified accepted 60- others on waitlist. Fall starts usually have larger applicant pool 40 credits full time- 3 semesters (heavy load), most are completing in 2 academic years- part time. Most are working as RN (2-3 courses a semester) Send to nursing@mnstate.edu will pass on to Barb. Once admitted to University, Barb becomes advisor. Application process online, give references, essay online. May be able to finish 10 Upper level courses while waiting to apply to program. 8. Other higher level programs in Health Field offered at your school? Ie MSN, Physical Therapy, BS in Community Health, BS in Health Services Admin (Nursing home but could also help in hospitals), MSN- Minor in Community Health, Minor in Health Services Admin; Masters in Nurse Educator 9. Once received BSN, where are students typically getting jobs? Job placement numbers? Already working and allows them to move into a higher level nurse; mental health, OB, OR, public health, etc. 10. What (if anything) would be helpful for students when applying to your program? Work Be thoughtful about choosing references- Professional supervisor or faculty member. Essay- read directions, thoughtful paper; Comments section could explain how they will be successful and if had a bad semester could use that to explain what happened and how they will change; Volunteer work, experience could be included; Courses completed at MSUM

6 Name of School: Metropolitan State University Contact Information: Joyce Bredesen Advisor- Debra Dornfeld Website: Revamping curriculum. 30% online. Cohort one day a week + 60 hrs of Comm Health practicum. Could stop out and continue with another cohort if needed Rotations with various populations for community work- Geriatric, wellness centers, homeless, diverse populations, mental health. Includes Leadership 32 nursing credits, Writing (Online, upper level), Statistics (NHCC), Medical Ethics (online), Goal 6 course (NHCC) Encourage writing, D2L/online experience, MATH1130 (if possible) 32 students accepted (minimum of 18 in cohort) 5 semesters part time. 4 starts per year with the new curriculum in various locations throughout Metro area. In last semester of nursing contact advisors, very helpful! 2.5 Cumulative GPA and 3.0 GPA in Pre-major courses Work experience is beneficial and can enhance your degree 9. Other higher level programs in Health Field offered at your school? Ie MSN, Physical Therapy, Bachelors in any degree and want RN= Masters in Nursing program; DNP-option instead of Masters in Nursing; Doctorate in Nursing; Masters in Nursing Educator; Leadership and Management- fully online program Many stay in the job they have- may be required by current job Those in long-term care can now look into Acute Care positions Public Health positions- through connections at Metro State Case Management- currently in hospital but move to community

8 Name of School: Winona State University Contact Information: Patricia Thompson Rochester Shirley Newberry-LaCrescent Website: Offered in Austin, LaCrescent, or Rochester (not Winona?); Hybrid program- in the community; days- 60% of class days are in class, other time is site based care and projects outside of class. In Direct and Direct Care activities- home community, vision screening, flu clinics, Community Health 80 credits can be transferred in; 12 credits upper level (nursing electives online- summer; Bus Admin online; Counselor Professional Development courses) + Stats (ACCEPT OUR STATS?); remedial don t count. 8 RN courses (28 credits) + 12 credits of upper division (4 Year school)+ Stats (lower division stats counts or STATS 301 from Winona- upper division and meeting requirement) Good idea to have 2 year degree. Transfer in 80 credits. Accepted Feb through July for Fall admit; Met criteria get accepted Full or part time option; full time 1 year- helpful to have electives so can focus on nursing; 2-3 year part time. Sooner the better; Prior to end of spring semester- limited time in the summer. Right from 2 year program so may work part time GPA 9. Other higher level programs in Health Field offered at your school? Ie MSN, Physical Therapy, MSN, DNP, Nurse Practitioner Carolyn Rinol-Adm Sonja Meiers Mayo, many working as RN; some into public health

9 Name of School: Augsburg College Contact Information: Janet Lestock Website: Offered at Minneapolis or Rochester campus (Bethel Lutheran Church); Offered Full or Part time and available evenings and weekends- clinical practicum usually during the day; Clinical includes Public Health, can be done abroad (maybe only 10 days)-geared for people working; Clinicals integrate classroom component with clinical experience (meet about 10 days throughout semester); face to face primarily but not every week or every day Eligible for Public Health Nurse Certificate; Lots of writing involved; clinicals include neighborhood clinics Can transfer up to 64 credits; will accept 28 credits of Nursing; minimum is 32 credits at Augsburg which is 7 Nursing courses MNTC will satisfy Liberal arts requirements (8 credits) + Search For Meaning requirement to one course (REL300) AA degree will satisfy Liberal arts requirements (8 credits) + Search For Meaning requirement to one course (REL300) and the Lifetime Fitness Requirement to one course If take 2 semesters of language it will allow student to be waived from one of Fine Arts or one of Humanities Rolling admissions- not a cohort model, apply a month before registration, 2.5 GPA and admitted to the college. Can be completed in 15 months if student attends full time, two courses per term (8 courses total)- with summer break. Very Flexible and can see the schedule for the whole year to plan it out. Small group classes Attend Information Session or meet individually with Janet to get preliminary review of transcripts GPA 2.5; work/experience is helpful but not required. Phi Theta Kappa- automatically receive scholarship of $600 per semester if taking 2 courses. Need based scholarship if apply early (month and a half before trimester begins) around $500

Ie MSN, Physical Therapy, MA in Nursing and DNP (Dr of Nursing Practice); if Apply to MA at Augsburg can be accepted and some BSN courses can be counted in the MA; MA focuses greatly on international medicine and nursing; Pre-Med; Physician Assistant MA- very competitive, experience with underserved and attend info session Many come in with jobs and finish program part time. Move into hospitals; to keep job must earn BSN

11 Name of School: Bethel College Contact Information: Diane Dahl OR Lois Erickson OR Chris Jolin Website: Register once for the entire program. Can take one or two courses at a time; 4 Locations- NHCC, Arden Hills, Bloomington, & Pine Technical College. Cohort starts- about 20 start in the NHCC cohort in Fall and spring- choice of cohort could be 1 evening a week, fully online (2014), or hybrid depending on location and cohort. Could drop and potentially start again with cohort and catch up on courses missed- work closely with advisor Leadership focus as well as Faith-based integration; Public Health Practicum/clinical included 39 credits BSN. They accept all courses in transfer and do their best to make them fit the general courses needed. Could complete AA/MNTC BUT really only need HIST1120 (Western Civilization), Fine Arts Goal 6 (already completed in our 2 year RN), College Writing I and II (ENGL 1201 already completed but finish ENGL1202), and MATH1130 (Statistics) 2.5 GPA in Nursing courses (RN) and 3.0 overall GPA and Writing Sample are most important to be competitive. Also need good references and resume Typically takes students 2 years completing one or two courses at a time. Towards the end of NHCC RN program. Bethel has spring and fall starts for their program. No work experience necessary but it is helpful and the program is flexible enough that many students do work while completing the program. 9. Other higher level programs in Health Field offered at your school? Ie MSN, Physical Therapy, Physician s Assistant program (starting Spring 2013, 30 spots); MS Nursing- focus in Education or Leadership tracks; Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP); Nursing Midwifery; MA Gerontology Typically students come with jobs and can then move up or change job types once they complete a program at Bethel.

12 Name of School: St. Mary s Contact Information: Jackie Austin Website: Based on adult learners but a good combination of students with lots of experience and those who ve just passed the NCLEX. Located at Minnetonka location- BS Completion programs. Diverse population (about 800 total students at this location). Evening courses and no clinical component. Management courses included; students per class. 7 week courses, one night a week. 64 Transfer (max is 100), Nursing core is 51, plus generals to equal 122 credits. $365 per credit; no religious courses required Not specifically required to complete AA or MNTC but could complete Goal 6 (Art/Hum) and Goal 8 (Global); They don t accept Logic but would accept Statistics as the math course OR students could wait until they get to St. Mary s to complete Financial Mgmt Rolling admissions; accept year round. Can do a provisional acceptance if student has yet to complete the NCLEX exam in the program currently. Admission process-- $25 application fee, official transcripts, and RN Degree Typically students are taking 2 classses per semester (6 credits) all year (including summer) which equals 18 per year so it could take about 2.5 years to complete but may depend on what s transferred in and what the student is able to take. When students are about 30 credits into our program they can contact St. Mary s to find out about admissions and what else they may need before applying to the BSN. Most students work while completing the program and can often get tuition reimbursement. Talk to Jackie and she can complete an unofficial degree audit/plan 9. Other higher level programs in Health Field offered at your school? Ie MSN, Physical Therapy, BS Psychology Counseling Psych/Family; Allied Healthcare more technical; Human Servicesthose who maybe don t want to go to grad school; Nurse Anesthiesia MS very competitive, BSN,

13 Lots of extra CHEM/sciences, 2+ years in Acute Setting; Health & Human Services Admin MA; MBA with emphasis in Healthcare Administration. Students are typically working in the field while completing the program.

14 Name of School: College of Saint Scholastica Contact Information: Jay Parsons- RN to BSN Recruiter; Website: 100% Online, Nursing portfolio required for graduation and must be working as RN to complete portfolio. Continues to build on your RN experience. BS improves skills in health promotion, cultural competence, information technology, and holistic nursing intervention. It can also expand career opportunities by preparing you with leadership training for greater responsibility and authority. Wage increase, leadership position Total of 128 credits needed to graduate with BSN. 64 credits from NHCC RN + AA degree can take care of generals Best thing students can do is complete the AA degree. Gen ed requirements met. Accept apps several times a year- (twice a semester- fall, spring, summer) Varies; Can be completed in 10 months (3-4 semesters); online advisors can help to create an individualized, flexible plan for each student. When ready to apply online Jay can answer questions. No app fee; if want an evaluation of transfer credits to find out what additional courses may need, students can apply now to begin that process. Require 3-6 months of experience as a registered Nurse in order to complete Portfolio credits; also require (after acceptance), copy of CPR certification that include expiration date. 9. Other higher level programs in Health Field offered at your school? Ie MSN, Physical Therapy, When all courses in BSN are completed, students wishing to obtain graduate degree in Nursing could begin courses at CSS after they apply to the program. Bachelors to DNP, MS Nursing, Post- Bach Nursing, Post Masters DNP, Nursing Informatics Certificate

15 Name of School: UW Green Bay Contact Information: Jan Malchow (male) ; ; BSN LINC ; Chat option too! Website: 3 Tracks to RN to BSN program- LINC Track for NHCC students for students who are outside of WI; Clinical in Community Health and can be arranged in home area (115.5 clock hours, 40 must be in Public Health dept.); no specific sequence so have some flexibility (besides a few); partner with 40 campuses all over the world Community Health Theory and also Practicum; Research- Stats would benefit; Capstone; two special topics courses: global health, aging, GIS, chronic illness, etc. 120 to graduate; 30 upper division Nursing; 60 credits transfer + 30 for other gen eds and nursing support courses completed at NHCC; Must have 30 courses at UW to graduate Changing gen eds effective 2014 grandfathered in for those that are accepted Nursing support courses= Stats and Expository Writing, etc== see Transfer Table Accept apps anytime apply by March-May for Fall (so you can register and courses are filled); Fall, spring, summer start; Spring apply by October (so you can register); Summer apply by Feb (to register). Application takes 2-3 weeks and then can register Haven t had to turn people away Majority students are working full time nurses and usually attend part time two classes a semester and working; Could take semester off and come back; If only upper level Nursing can be done in 2 semesters depends on what they transfer in 2 advisors and one part time that are just nursing; very supportive and advise students to connect with advisor when they get accepted to make an academic plan 2.5 CUM GPA and RN license can apply before NCLEX but will be accepted as PreNursing and can only take gen eds and Nursing support, BUT if you have a 3.0+ and completed gen eds could still take 1 Nursing course a semester must appeal and work with advisor

Ie MSN, Physical Therapy, BS HINT (health info technology)- online program, transfer credits, computer skills, another set of skills that could make them competitive in the workplace. Starting MSN program fall 2013 focus Leadership and Mgmt in Health Systems 2 year program, 34 credits (cohort about 17 credits a semester); research component which will be published Most stay where they are; some transfer to higher level jobs in those settings, some leave and find higher level, some are going on to MSN- may return as faculty OTHER: send upcoming grads letter to nursing department about program in Spring semester. He will do a free analysis of credits so they can see what they have remaining and what it will take to complete the degree; also offers video conferencing, to answer questions and focus on the partnership and the benefit; try to make trips to campus for fair or set up himself for individual appointments (thinking about MN in the coming year)
