2 WHY EARN AN MSHAL? Terry Moore, president emeritus and retired CEO of MidMichigan Health, is also the former executive-in-residence at SVSU and member of the faculty for the Master's of Science in Health Administration & Leadership program. In these roles, Terry saw firsthand the need for and value of a healthcare leadership program in an industry that continues to surge in terms of largest and fastest job growth areas, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And in his role as CEO of the Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance, Terry s observations go beyond his medical and higher education experiences now he looks at things through a wider, regional lens. What he sees is the critical need for this program in a region that has become a major medical/healthcare hub. Terry knows how difficult it can be to pursue education while working; he earned the last two of his three master s degrees when he held a full-time job. People are either sacrificing today for a better tomorrow or sacrificing tomorrow for today, he says. From experience, Terry says a master s degree is an essential credential for future success in health care. The leadership and management roles in the industry are numerous, but they re increasingly competitive. A master s degree is now the standard in many areas. Of SVSU s health leadership program, Terry says it provides a broad range of educational experience and builds leadership ability. Students will strengthen their abilities in health care finance, law, human resources and communication. Terry adds that the SVSU program offers additional benefits. Classes are generally small, allowing for excellent student-instructor interaction." The major business we are all in, or at least should be in, is to improve ourselves, and this program is a unique opportunity for health care professionals to do that.

3 MEET Cynthia Mcquarter When Cynthia Mcquarter decided to pursue her graduate degree, it had been 21 years since she had completed her undergraduate studies. That, she says, was a little scary at first. Once she made up her mind that she would obtain her degree, she then faced the challenge of what and where. Though Cynthia had been working in health care for her entire career, she casually thought about getting her MBA. But as soon she realized that she wanted to stay in health care and knew that a master s degree could likely aid her chances for promotions, she decided on SVSU s MSHAL (Master of Science in Health Administration & Leadership). And she s glad she did. The classes are small so there is a lot of interaction with faculty, and the students in the program represent a mix of young and those already established in their careers. Cynthia adds that she also really likes the fact that many courses include both MSHAL students and students in the MAS program (Master of Arts - An MSHAL Degree is in Demand According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics ( the employment outlook for Medical and Health Service Managers is projected to grow 23% through from The mean earnings in 2012 for Medical and Health Service Managers was $88,580. Employment will grow fast in offices of health practitioners. Many services previously provided in hospitals will continue to shift to these settings, especially as medical technologies improve. Demand in medical group practice management will grow as medical group practices become larger and more complex Administrative Science). Interacting with non-healthcare professionals is a great way to learn about other aspects of the workplace. Between the confidence builder the program has been as well as the plus afforded by great networking and connections made with other regional, healthcare professionals, Cynthia is somewhat already nostalgic about the program. The hybrid (on-campus, on-line) classes and the fact that all classes are offered in the evening is great. 4 HEALTH ADMINISTRA The Master of Science Health Administration & Leadership (MSHAL) program provides interdisciplinary preparation for students pursuing a career in administration and leadership of health or human services organizations. The program includes theoretical and experiential learning opportunities. Core courses provide a sound foundation in health and organizational management and leadership. Graduates of this program will acquire knowledge and skills in: Improvements implemented to transform health and human services systems at the macro and microsystem levels. Value of health information technology to the healthcare organization. Art and science of management and leadership of health or human services organizations. Community development for organizational and system health. Organizational process improvement and project planning Ethical, legal, and regulatory aspects of leadership practice in health and human services. Research utilization in health and human services. Managerial finance and healthcare reimbursement methodologies. Courses can be taken in either the online or hybrid format or a combination of both for greater flexibility. The program is not cohort based and can be completed in a part-time or full-time schedule. ACCREDITATIONS Saginaw Valley State University maintains the highest level of accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The commission sets a standard of integrity for universities, taking into consideration the academic mission, strategy, resources, assessment process, teaching effectiveness, student learning, usefulness of curricula, and community involvement. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A completed Application for Graduate Admission including the non-refundable $30 application fee and the following: A bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 Official copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts At least 3 credits of undergraduate statistics or research A current résumé which includes education, employment, scholarship and service A one or two-page statement of academic and career goals Two graduate recommendation forms, preferably from educators or employers INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS must complete the International Student Application for Graduate Admission including the non-refundable $90 application fee, all items listed above, as well as: Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate competence in English. SVSU accepts Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores of 580 or higher on the written version, 237 or higher on the computer based version, or 92 or better on the Internet-based version. For the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam a score of 7.0 or higher is accepted. SVSU s English Language Program is available for students without a TOEFL or IELTS score or for those with a TOEFL or IELTS score below the required minimum. SVSU also accepts a grade of B or better for at least one year of English composition or its equivalent in an accredited U.S. college or university. Successful completion of the English Language Program does not guaranteed acceptance to a graduate program at SVSU. Students earning a C, D, or F may repeat a course only once and the second grade will become official.
