The School is committed to ensuring a thorough consultation exercise is undertaken and has employed RPS Community Consultation Team to facilitate this. This exhibition enables local stakeholders to view the draft proposals and comment on the scheme. Please use one of the feedback forms provided to tell us what you think. All feedback received will be considered and, where possible, incorporated into the proposals. We hope that you find this exhibition helpful. 2 Background Whitgift School was founded in 1596 by John Whitgift, Elizabeth I s last Archbishop of Canterbury, and opened in 1600, making it Croydon s oldest school. Haling Park, to which the School moved in 1931, was at one time the home of Lord Howard of Effingham, Lord High Admiral of the Fleet sent against the Armada, and it retains the appearance of an attractive country estate. The original buildings have been supplemented by many additions and improvements including an outstanding Music School and Concert Hall, a separate Lower School building and a sports complex. In 1990, one of the largest and most innovative educational building projects in Britain was completed to provide an integrated facility for science, technology, art and design together with library and resource centres of exceptional quality. The School s aims are: To strive for excellence in all aspects of school life, promoting a culture of achievement and the celebration of achievement. To offer a broad, balanced and innovative curriculum which challenges all pupils at an appropriate level. To inculcate positive values of mutual respect, tolerance and self-esteem, fostering an informed and critical awareness of the mores prevalent in society. To apply a supportive pastoral framework, which both establishes a strong corporate identity and also allows the individual to flourish. To provide a stimulating and life-enhancing environment in which to live, learn and appreciate our heritage. To attract and develop well-qualified, talented and forward thinking staff capable of inspiring pupils in their respective fields. To offer a rich and broad co-curricular programme which enables both the highest levels of achievement and wide accessibility. To maintain excellent relations with the wider community, nurturing mutually beneficial links in a variety of spheres. To infuse a variety of areas of school life with an international dimension. To prepare boys for the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly technological future. The Proposal As part of the evolution of the School, Whitgift is proposing a further boarding house, which will enhance the existing provision and responds to developments in education. The new boarding house will provide flexible or weekly boarding, offering boys the chance to realise their full potential at the School, both academically and in their co-curricular life. It is envisaged that the boarding house would enhance the School significantly by: Providing the option of full, weekly or flexi-boarding for pupils; Allowing pupils to advance still further in their academic studies, co-curricular pursuits and personal development; Encouraging pupils to try new activities, including sports, music and drama. Pupils at Whitgift are extremely committed to their school and a boarding school ethos would develop this still further. A more extensive boarding provision would also give access to a Whitgift education to pupils outside the existing catchment area and further diversify the pupil body, which is one of the School's many strengths.

3 Site Considerations The 45 acre historic parkland environment of Whitgift School represents a significant social amenity that benefits education and school life. The historic grounds are maintained to a high standard and enjoyed by pupils, parents, staff and visitors. A new building within this parkland setting therefore needs to be carefully considered. Shortlist of selected sites Seven locations within the grounds were originally considered for the boarding house. The site plan to the right shows each of these locations. Site 2 was chosen after extensive analysis of all the sites. The temporary car park area to the south of the war memorial, was selected as the most appropriate location. It has the following benefits: It is well screened from Brighton Road by mature trees to the east. There will be no loss of playing field, open space or green field land. The car parking spaces have been relocated elsewhere on campus. View of proposed boarding house from the south The site is terraced, falling away to the south east. This offers scope for some accommodation to be dug in to the slope to limit spread of development. A topographical high point to the north west offers a suitable position for the main entrance to the new building and a pedestrian link to the School beyond The design achieves a positive relationship between the new boarding house and the locally listed Big School building. Location of C shaped option Massing models of C shaped option Massing models of L shaped option Appearance The design is formal but not institutional, responding to its location, but not controlled by it and in scale with the trees and adjacent buildings, whilst still being distinctive. The shaped footprint minimises the apparent bulk of the building externally and creates intimate spaces in the interior. The building has been carefully laid out to have no impact on the existing established deciduous trees which will form part of the solar control measures by shading in summer and allowing maximum day light in winter. Scale The proposal reflects the optimum solution of 2 floors of accommodation which will initially be defined as junior on the first floor and senior on the upper level. No boys will occupy the ground floor, which will be dedicated to staff living accommodation, social and study spaces and ancillary accommodation. The topography of the site allows a small area which relates to the sports facilities to act as a dirty entrance to contain sports kit and equipment. This will be in a semi-basement, but will result in the southern end being 4 storeys.

9 Welcome Sustainable Design Aspirations BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building s environmental performance. BREEAM evaluates the building at design, construction and post construction stages to ensure that it is environmentally sound. The new Boarding House at Whitgift will meet the highest BREEAM rating of excellent. To do this we will need to achieve a score of 70 or above. We are working with an independent assessor to ensure the Boarding House will achieve this on completion. We require our new Boarding House to meet high standards of sustainable design including: Achieving BREEAM excellent rating; Achieving 10% CO2 reduction through on-site renewable energy; Incorporating Low and Zero Carbon Technologies; and Incorporating passive solar design. At the moment our Sustainability Consultants are evaluating what renewable energy sources are the most appropriate for the Boarding House.
