1 LABKO CESSPOOLS 1.1 General Labko cesspools are separators made of reinforced plastic, which are designed for controlled collecting of the sewage waters in an area without public sewer. When the cesspool is filled, the collected sewage is transported by a container truck to a communal sewer area or wastewater treatment plant. A wireless high level alarm unit with a probe is delivered with each cesspool. The alarm unit contributes to an easy way of controlling the fulfilment of the cesspool and excludes the need for opening the cesspool cover when checking the surface level. The anchoring belts needed for a proper mounting in the ground and also D200 emptying pipe with cap or (depending on the model of the cesspool) a D600 maintenance shaft are delivered in the standard delivery of Labko GRP cesspool. The manufacturer admits 10 years material and water-tightness warranties for the cesspools. 1.2 Important to know about Cesspools To ensure the best possible operation of the cesspool, read carefully through these instructions of operation, installation and maintenance. During the installation, pay special attention on the details mentioned below to guarantee safe working conditions and separator function: Handle the tank with care. Do not drag, roll or drop it. Fasten the separator carefully for the transportation to avoid any damage. Inspect the separator immediately after the transport to the installation site for any damage that might have occurred during the transport. Anchor the separator to prevent it from floating; this is the buoyancy-effect caused by the groundwater or the rainwater that pours into the excavation. Installation depth of the separator is max. 1 m measured from the bottom of inlet pipe to the ground level For filling the installation pit it is recommended to use sieved gravel of grain size 3-16 mm. During filling of the mounting pit it is forbidden to drive with excavator closer to separator than 1.5 m measured from the edges and ends of the separator. To ensure reliable and proper functioning of the separator, certain inspection and maintenance operations must be carried out. Regular maintenance plays a key role in the best possible purifying efficiency. Mark the location of the separator e.g. to property s maintenance manual (e.g. map or the description of the location). Entering to the separator is allowed only if all the local safety regulations are obeyed (e.g. measuring oxygen content, using of safety equipment etc.). Smoking and open fire are strictly forbidden. To avoid accidents, the tank lid must always be closed! It is always the property owner who is responsible for preventing anything from falling into the separator (children, animals, etc.)! The cesspools can t be installed to a traffic area. WAVIN-LABKO OY 3(16)
1.3 Handling of the separator Handle the separator with care. The separator can t be dragged, rolled or dropped. Fasten the separator properly for the transportation. Lift the separator with belts only from lifting eye bolts or circulate belts properly around the separator if forklift truck can t be used. Avoid sudden moves when lifting the separator to ensure belts won t slip. Inspect the well immediately after transporting it to the installation site for any damage that might have occurred during the transportation. Figure 1. Handling of the separator. 7 2.3 Components and accessories High level alarm unit and probe Instructions for installation and operation of the high level alarm device are described in a separate manual Anchoring accessories Cesspools must be anchored to prevent them from being moved by the buoyancy effect of the ground water. Anchoring can be done with impregnated wooden logs, glass reinforced plastic plates or with a reinforced anchoring slab. LOKA cesspools are always anchored to the anchoring slab. The separators must be anchored by means of non-stretching polyester belts which are delivered with the cesspool. There may be extra belts in the anchoring package, see needed amount in the tables on pages 5 and 6. 3 INSTRUCTIONS FOR MOUNTING IN THE GROUND 3.1 Mounting pit, anchoring slab and anchoring belts 1 Excavate a mounting pit of sufficient size for the separator. The edges of the mounting pit must exceed both sides and the ends of the separator by at least 0.5 m, allowing enough space for the sieved gravel around the separator. 2 Compact a horizontally levelled, 30 cm sieved gravel layer on the bottom of the pit. For filling the pit it is recommended to use sieved gravel of grain size 3-16 mm. If gravel is not available it is possible to use sand as long as it doesn t behave like quick sand. Sand must be locked in place with walls or more robust ground. Gravel or stones bigger than grain size 16 mm may not be located next to the separator. 3. Remove the transportation pallet before lifting the cesspool into the pit. Cesspools made of glass reinforced plastic have integrated skids which can t be removed. Cast or lift an already casted anchoring slab on the sieved gravel layer. Maximum installation depth of the cesspools from ground level to the lower edge of the inlet sewer is 1 m. The separators should be anchored in order for the buoyant force of the water in the ground not to move the separator. We recommend a reinforced concrete slab to be used as an anchor. Anchoring slab should be cast if the ground water level in the area is higher than the bottom of the separator the water transmission in the ground is weak, and the rain water may gather into the mounting pit of the separator the bearing capacity of the ground is weak LOKA Anchoring to concrete slab LOKA cesspools can be anchored to a reinforced anchoring slab sized separator s length x separator s diameter mm x 150 mm. Cast 4 10 pcs stainless steel lugs to the concrete slab (see needed amount of anchoring belts Figure 2, needed amount of SS lugs is twice as much). Determinate the position of the SS lugs on basis of separator length and the amount and placement of the anchoring belts before casting the concrete slab. Use e.g. concrete K30-2 and A500HW T8 #200 reinforcement for casting the slab. Place the belts on the straight part of the separator with even intervals (ca cm). Make sure that the belts on the both ends of the separator can t slip off the separator. Tension the belts with appropriate ratchets which have delivered with the belts. Other appliances are not allowed to use to tension the belts, because the belts might get overtensioned, causing damage to the separator. The recommended way to tension the belts is two-phase: each belt is first tensioned to a level, where the force of the ratchet starts to increase substantially. In the second phase, each belt should be tensioned again, starting from the first belt. Make sure that the ratchets do not press onto the separator surface. WAVIN-LABKO OY 7(16)
Figure 4. Anchoring LOKA to a concrete slab. Anchoring with GRP-plates The separator can also be anchored with glass reinforced plastic plates (Figure 5). Place the plates to the same level with the separator s bottom. Slip the anchoring belt through the holes of the plate and tie at least with double knot. See needed amount of plates in the table on page 5. Figure 5. Anchoring LOKA cesspool with GRP-plates. Anchoring with wooden logs Alternatively, the anchoring of cesspools with volume less than liters can be performed with 4 pcs of impregnated wooden logs sized 100 x 100 x 3500 mm, if the water transmission in the ground is weak. Place the logs on both sides of the separator so that the logs are completely covered with sieved gravel. Add at least 20 cm layer of sieved gravel between the separator and the logs. Tie non-stretching belts around the logs so tight those won t give in due to buoyant force. WAVIN-LABKO OY 8(16)
Figure 6. Anchoring LOKA with impregnated wooden logs LOKA Anchoring to concrete slab LOKA cesspools can be anchored to a reinforced anchoring slab sized separator s length x separator s diameter mm x 150 mm. Use e.g. concrete K30-2 and A500HW T8 #200 reinforcement for casting the slab. Determinate the position of the SS lugs on basis of separator length and the amount and placement of the anchoring belts before casting the concrete slab. Cast 8 22 pcs stainless steel lugs to the concrete slab (see Figure 3 for needed amount of anchoring belts, needed amount of SS lugs is twice as much). Figure 7. Anchoring LOKA cesspool to a concrete slab. 3.2 Installing to a hill The cesspools can t be installed to a hill. There should be a 45 degree angle between the separator s edges and the hill (Figure 8). WAVIN-LABKO OY 9(16)
Figure 8. Installation of LOKA cesspool into a hill. 3.3 Filling the mounting pit 1. Start filling the pit. Compact the sieved gravel in 20 cm layers. Avoid using heavy vibration when compacting layers on top of the separator and on sewers. Don t remove the cap from the emptying pipe before the pit is filled to the level of the separator s top surface. 2. Before finalizing filling of the pit, install the inlet pipe to the separator s D110 inlet sewer with a socket or a double socket. Additionally, two 15 bends can be used to create a flexible connection to the separator (Figure 10). The inlet pipe must be installed to at least 10 (10mm/m) tilt. The cesspools are ventilated via inlet sewer to the roof of the house. Remove the cap from D200 pipe connection and install D200 emptying pipe to its place. Alternatively, if the cesspool includes D600 maintenance shaft installation sleeve instead of emptying pipe connection, put the maintenance shaft to its place and install a gasket between the sleeve and the shaft. NOTE! No traffic load above the separator! Figure 9. Filling the mounting pit. WAVIN-LABKO OY 10(16)
Figure 10. Flexible inlet pipe made of two 15 bends. 3. Install the probe (section 4) and fill the pit in a way that the ground surface will be slightly elevated on the top of the separator. This way the surface waters will be lead off the top of the separator. For constructing the frost insulation see section Frost insulation The cesspool must be installed in a way it won t freeze. The required frost insulation depends on the installation depth of the sewers and local circumstances. However, it is recommended to always construct frost protection in area where frost may exist. Frost insulation should be done with insulation plates. Dimensioning of the plate s thickness and width is case-specific. WAVIN-LABKO OY 11(16)
4 INSTALLATION OF THE ALARM PROBE Install the central unit of the alarm device to a dry indoor location. A good installation location enables easy reading and control of the device. Do not cover the central unit as this may interfere with signal reception from the transmitter. The device is plugged to the 230 V mains via the power cord. Do not leave the probe in the tank during vacuum disposal. See more specific installation instructions from separate alarm unit s installation and operation instructions. 4.1 LOKA In LOKA cesspools the probe is on proper height if probe s upper end is on the same level with the separators upper surface (Figure 11). If there is D200 emptying pipe, probe s upper end should be ca. 50 mm above emptying pipe s lower edge. Figure 11. Installing the alarm probe to LOKA cesspools. 4.2 LOKA In LOKA cesspools the probe is on proper height if probe s upper end is ca. 100 mm lower than the separator s upper surface (Figure 12). Figure 12. Installing the alarm probe to LOKA cesspools. WAVIN-LABKO OY 12(16)
5 MAINTENANCE The cesspool requires certain regular control procedures to guarantee its proper functioning. An inspection log must be kept up with entries concerning the control procedures, emptying data and the details of possible malfunctions and the actions taken in the malfunction situations. An example of a log with the sewage removal and transport data including some control procedures is presented in section Emptying Follow the filling of the cesspool. There is still some space left in the cesspool when alarm indicates it is almost full. Sewage must be removed when it reaches the level of the inlet sewer. Removing of the sewage is done with a container truck, which transports the sewage to a place where it is managed. Lift the probe out of the separator for the duration of removing of the sewage. To avoid accidents, the tank lid must always be closed! It is always the property owner who is responsible for preventing anything from falling into the separator (children, animals, etc.)! 5.2 Maintenance of the separator Empty the separator for inspection at least once in five years. Drain the cleaning water completely from the separator with the suction hose of the container truck before checking the separator. Clean the inner constructions with tap water using a high pressure washer. Check the tightness of the separator, condition of the body, inner surfaces of the separator and condition of inner structures. Also check the condition and installations of the probe and the probe cables and that the alarm unit is operating properly. 5.3 High level alarm unit Operation and maintenance of the alarm unit is described in separate manual which comes with the central unit of the alarm device. 6 RECYCLING AND DISPOSAL Tank out of use should be disposed according to current local laws and regulations. Check current disposing instructions from local waste collecting agency. Disposal the alarm unit to electronic waste collection point. Wash the probe before disposal. Remove the battery from the transmitter and disposal to batteries / hazardous waste collection point. WAVIN-LABKO OY 13(16)
