11 E.6 GENERAL FACULTY RULES FOR THE DIFFERENT POST- GRADUATE QUALIFICATIONS E.6.1 E.6.2 AUTHORITY OF THE A-RULES The faculty rules applicable to the different programmes of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences and included in this calendar of the Faculty are subject to the general academic rules of North West University, as determined from time to time by the Council of North West University on the recommendation of the Senate, and therefore the faculty rules have to be read together with those general academic rules (hence referred to as general rule(s)). Printed copies of the rules may be consulted in the Ferdinand Postma Library and at the Director: Academic Administration SCHOOLS AND FOCUS AREAS IN THE FACULTY The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences consists of five schools. A director manages each school. In every school there are different programmes, each with a programme leader. The schools are especially responsible for the teaching of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes. In the Faculty there is also an Institute for Tourism, Wildlife Economics and Leisure Studies. 12 Research in the Faculty is managed by the director of the Research Unit (Focus Area), Workwell: Research Unit for People, Policy & Performance, which encompasses the sub-programmes: Economic Competitiveness and Work Wellness as well as an institute, viz. the Institute for Tourism, Wildlife Economics and Leisure Studies. The director of the research unit is responsible for the management of the research component of the master s and Ph.D. education programmes. More information is available on the WebPages of the research unit (( Research is also conducted together with other research focus areas/units such as the Research Unit for Business Mathematics (BMI). E.6.3 QUALIFICATIONS, PROGRAMMES AND CURRICULA In the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences different qualifications can be obtained at a post-graduate level; some of these only on a full-time basis and some both on a full-time and part-time basis. All of these degrees are presented in different programmes. Each programme consists of different curricula, of which everyone is compiled from relevant modules. Each module represents (the contents of) a subdivision of a subject. Examples of subjects are Economics, International Trade, Risk Management, Labour Economics, Business Management, Tourism Management, Industrial Psychology, Industrial Sociology, Management Accounting, Financial Accounting and Accounting. Information on the rules for the different qualifications, programmes and curricula are explained in this Calendar. For administrative purposes the different programmes/curricula are grouped under the different schools (in which they are primarily presented) and each of these programmes/curricula is provided with a unique degree/qualification code. A prospective learner must first decide which qualification he or she wishes to obtain, after which the specific programme/curriculum is selected. E.7.1 E E E E E E ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A learner must comply with rule A.12.1 when applying for admission to the B.Com.(Hons) or B.A.(Hons) degree (the latter in the case of studies in B.A.(Hons) Industrial Psychology/Industrial Psychological Counselling, Industrial Sociology or Tourism). Apart from this requirement the learner must already have obtained a B.Com./B.A. degree or B.Com./B.A. status as approved by the Faculty Board. He/she must comply with all the core module requirements of the primary part of the intended B.Com.(Hons)/B.A.(Hons) studies. Furthermore he/she must comply with the specific requirements of the relevant programme. The general ability and academic achievements of the learner in these core modules must, in each of the modules included, be of a satisfactory standard in the opinion of the relevant school director. Specific requirements regarding the B.Com.(Hons) degree a) A module from human sciences for exemption from MHBP111. b) A mathematics module for exemption from WISK123 for curricula requiring the latter. c) A statistics course for exemption from STTK122 for curricula requiring the latter. Further requirements for specific subjects A general guideline of a minimum of 60% per module applies or whatever the relevant school may determine. 19 E E E Economics The learner must already have taken six (6) modules form the School of Economics, Risk Management and International Trade at an undergraduate level. Of these at least one must have been at a third year level. The modules in the honours programme must be equivalent to similar undergraduate modules. To choose some of the BWIN-modules, a student had to pass STTK311 and Maths on second-year level. For EKNP617 the prerequisite is STTK311. Business Management ONBP111, 121/2, 211/2, 221, 311, 321. An average of 65% is required in ONBP311 and ONBP321. Tourism Management: ONTP111, 122, 123, 211, 212, 224, 311, 321. An average of 65% is required in ONTP311 and ONTP321. E E Financial Accountancy a) To be admitted to the B.Com.(Hons) (Financial Accountancy) degree the learner must be in possession of a B.Com. or other degree, as approved by the Faculty Board. This degree must include the following modules (or equivalent courses): Financial Accounting (REKP311, 321), Income Tax (REIP311, 321), Management Accounting (BRKP211, 221, 311, 321), Auditing (REOP211, 221) and Commercial Law (RHRP121, 311). For REKP311, 321 and REIP311, 321 or equivalent courses an average module mark of 60% is required and for the others an average of 50%. b) To be admitted to this degree an application must be made on the prescribed form to the programme leader of the Programme for the Financial Accountant Training (CPA) before the onset of the academic year. c) Successful completion of this B.Com.(Hons) (Financial Accountancy) degree may grant the learner who complies with the required minimum pass percentages of 60% admission to the B.Com.(Hons) (Chartered Accountancy) degree. In such a case the learners must already have obtained credits for Auditing (REOP321) and Commercial Law (RHRP311). Chartered Accountancy a) To be admitted to the B.Com.(Hons) (Chartered Accountancy) degree the learner must have obtained a B.Com., B.Acc., or another degree as approved by the Faculty Board. This degree must include the following modules (or equivalent courses): Accounting (RECP311, 321 (RECP371 from 2010)), Auditing (RHRP311, REOP321), Management Accounting (BRKP311, 321), Taxation (REBP311, 321 (REBP312, 322 from 2010)) and Commercial Law (RHRP121,311). Alternatively the learner must have completed at least one year of part time studies in Honours B.Com. (Chartered Accountancy) or equivalent studies at a university. b) The learner must have obtained an average of at least 55% in Accounting, Auditing, Management Accounting, Commercial law and Taxation in his/her final year (with a double weight of Accounting) to be admitted to full-time one-year studies. Admission to two-year part-time studies will be considered on the basis of the academic achievements of the learner. (This 9
20 concession is only applicable to the two year English programme in Mmabatho.) c) To be admitted to this degree an application must be made on the prescribed form to the programme leader of the Programme for the Chartered Accountant Training (CA) before the onset of the academic year. E E.7.2 E.7.3 E E E Forensic Accountancy a) The learner must have obtained an average of at least 60% in Forensic Accounting and Accounting and at least 55% in Auditing and Taxation in his/her final year to be admitted to full-time one-year studies. b) In the honours year there are two options: If all the prerequisites for the honours degree were complied with, the first option is to register full-time for the honours degree in Forensic Accounting. The second option is to register part-time for honours in Forensic Accounting (over 2 years). In this instance the learner will register for FORP671 and JURI411 together with the prescribed undergraduate BRKP modules. If the BRKP-modules are passed with an average of 55% the learner can change to honours in Chartered Accounting in the second year. Upon completion of honours in Chartered Accounting, the contents of the honours in forensics will also have been reached. DURATION OF THE STUDIES The minimum duration of the studies is one year full-time and the maximum duration is two years full-time. For part-time studies the minimum duration is two years and the maximum duration is three years. EXAMINATIONS Examination opportunities The examination opportunities and relevant rules are in accordance with general rule A.8.1. Composition of the participation mark A participation mark for a module (general rule A.1.7) may be compiled from tests, assignments and other forms of assessment. Admission to examinations a) Admission to the examination in any module is gained by obtaining a proof of participation (general rules A.1.4 to A.8.6). b) A proof of participation, which grants admission to the examinations, will only be issued after a learner has, to the satisfaction of the school director, complied with the requirements explained in the study guide of the relevant module. 10
21 E E Module mark The module mark (general rule A.1.39) is calculated according to the ratio between the participation mark and the examination mark as indicated in the study guide. Pass requirements of a module and programme a) The stipulations of general rules A.8.4-A apply. b) The subminimum for all modules in which examinations are taken is 40% (general rule A.8.7.5). c) The pass requirement of a module in which examinations are taken, is a module mark of 50% (general rule A.8.7.1). d) By passing all the modules of which the programme is compiled individually, the programme (general rule A.8.5) is passed. e) General rules A and A stipulate the requirements for a programme to be passed with honours. f) As far as the B.Com.(Hons) Chartered Accountancy programme is concerned, the following additional rules ((g) to (j) apply: g) Learners have to pass all of the modules in one examination opportunity to obtain the degree. Re-admission to the programme does not take place automatically. If only three (3) modules are passed, an Honours B.Com. Accountancy is acquired. h) All learners must obtain at least one month of practical experience at an accounting/auditing firm or at any other acknowledged training office of the SAICA during their studies (undergraduate or post-graduate). i) On obtaining the degree the Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA) is awarded automatically. j) If a learner s progress during the year is not satisfactory he/she may not be allowed to the final STR examinations (end examination). k) Concerning the B.Com.(Hons) Chartered Accountancy programme, the following additional rules are applicable ((l) to( p)): l) In the first year, learners must pass all four modules in order to gain admission to the second year. m) Learners must pass all the modules of the second year during one examination session in order to obtain the degree. Re-entry into the program does not take place automatically. If only three (3) second-year subjects are passed, an Honours B.Com. Accounting is obtained. n) All learners should get practical experience at an auditing/accounting firm or recognised training office of SAICA of at least one month during their studies (under- or post-graduate). o) The degree automatically includes the Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA). p) If the learner s progress is not satisfactory during any of the two years, the learner may be requested to leave the program and stop the studies. 11

E.8.1 DURATION OF THE STUDIES a) The minimum duration of the studies is one year and the maximum duration is three years, calculated from the date of first registration for the relevant programme. b) General rule A determines the procedure for the extension of the period of study. E.8.2 E.8.3 E.8.4 ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION The admission requirements and dates of registration and reregistration are determined in terms of general rules A A APPROVAL OF THE STUDY PROGRAMME Approval of the study programme and the rules followed in the procedure are determined in terms of general rule A The study programme must, to the satisfaction of the director of the research focus area, contribute to the research programme(s) of the University as determined by the different research focus areas. SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS a) A learner must be in possession of a B.A. (Honours) or B.Com. (Honours) degree or have the status of a B.A. (Honours) or B.Com. (Honours) degree as approved by the Senate. The study content of this degree must be to the satisfaction of the Dean and the director involved with the intended M.Com. studies. b) The student must have obtained an average of at least 60% in the Honours B.Com. c) The student must have obtained at least 60% in the B.Com.(Hons) modules upon which the intended studies are based. d) The research ability of the student must be to the satisfaction of the School director and the Director of the research area/unit. Students whose ability in research methods are deemed not to be adequate by the school director and research director will only be accepted into an M-programme after successfully completing the faculty s short courses in research methodology. e) Learners with an honours degree in Industrial Psychology who, for whatever reason, may not continue with a master s degree in Industrial Psychology, will when they have completed a preliminary oral examination to the satisfaction of the programme leader of Industrial Sociology, be allowed to enrol for a master s degree in Industrial Sociology (Labour Relations), provided the academic requirements of the latter programme are complied with. 26
37 f) Prospective M.Com. and M.A. Industrial Psychology learners are subject to a selection programme available at the Director. All learners applying for the Masters Programme in Industrial Psychology or Human Resource Management at the North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus or Vaal Triangle Campus), should pass a competency examination in Statistics. Learners who do not obtain a minimum of 50% in this examination, can be denied admission to the Masters Programme in Industrial Psychology, or must be prepared to complete a workshop on basic statistical methods (as prescribed by the Programme for Industrial Psychology) at their own cost. Learners must complete this workshop within the first six months of their Masters Training, but will be allowed to do it simultaneously with the other compulsory modules which form part of the Masters Programme. Nomination of examiners The nomination of examiners and moderators take place in terms of general rule A.8.2. Admission to examinations a) The admission to the examination in any module takes place by acquiring a proof of participation (general rules A.1.6 and A.8.6). b) A proof of participation, which grants admission to the examination, will only be issued after a learner has complied with the requirements for the relevant module to the satisfaction of the school director in consultation with the subject group chairperson involved. Examinations a) The examination for the master s degree is taken in terms of the prescriptions of general rule A b) A learner registering at such a stage of the year that he/she cannot catch up on the examination paper section of that specific year will have to complete the examination paper section right at the end of the second study year. Such a student must submit the research proposal to the Executive Committee of the Faculty Council for approval within six months after registration as indicated by general rule A c) A dissertation or minidissertation is submitted only with the written consent of the study leader(s) (general rule A.13.9). d) The number of times that a learne r may present him-/herself for examination and the repetition of modules are determined in terms of general rule A e) Requirements for a dissertation/minidissertation: i) The requirements to which a dissertation or minidissertation must conform are determined in terms of general rule A
38 ii) Learners must make quite sure of the contents of the Manual for Postgraduate Studies (general rule A ). f) Participation mark A participation mark for modules may be compiled from assignments and other forms of assessment. g) Module mark/results The module mark of modules (examination papers) in which examinations are taken, is calculated according to the provisions of general rules A.8.7 (pass mark of 50%), A (ratio between participation and examination mark), A (subminimum of 40%), A and A (distinction). The calculation of the module mark and results of a dissertation or minidissertation are determined in terms of the provisions of general rule A E Termination of studies A learner s studies may be terminated on the basis of the provisions of general rule A.9. 28
