1 Del Lago Academy, Campus of Applied Science Course Descriptions Del Lago scholars will participate and learn as a community, taking part in many hands on, real world activities and projects. Together, we will help prepare one another for the future and discover our passions and interests; making certain that we gain knowledge, awareness, and understanding from our shared and individual experiences. Our desire is to make learning fun, relevant, and useful for every student, in every class, at every opportunity. Grade 9: Theme: Personal and Community Health and Wellness Human Body Systems Pending UC approval one-term/10 s Description: This course will engage scholars in the study of the processes, structures and interactions of human body systems. Important biomedical concepts in the course include: communication, transport of substances, locomotion, metabolic processes, identity, and protection. The central theme will focus on how the body systems work together to maintain homeostasis and good health. The systems will be studied as parts of a whole working together to keep the amazing human machine functioning at an optimal level. Students will design experiments and investigate body systems using software to monitor their own body functions such as muscle movement, heart rate, ECGs, reflexes, and respiratory operation. Prerequisite: Integrated Math I or Algebra I or concurrent enrollment. Principles of Pending UC approval one-term/10 s Biomedical Science Description: Scholars will engage in many interesting, hands-on projects in biomedical science. Along with their classmates, scholars will learn the causes and effects of several health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, sickle cell disease, high cholesterol, and infectious diseases. Following a forensic investigation, scholars will perform a case analysis about the death of a fictional person, drawing conclusions about what might have caused his/her death and exploring lifestyle choices and treatments that could have enabled a longer and healthier life. Scholars will also examine the role genetics and heredity play in determining a person s health and wellness. Prerequisite: Integrated Math or Algebra I or concurrent enrollment. English Pending UC approval two-term/10 s English Seminar 5 s Description: In English 9, scholars will acquire a new love for reading, not just as a means of entertainment, but as a medium for learning strategies. Scholars will also take part in hands-on projects that help them gather information, make sense of it, and then communicate what is learned to others. Classes will engage in interesting and thought-provoking discussions around life and living, health and wellness, and what it means to be human on a planet in jeopardy. The future is up to this generation, and in this class, scholars will gain the reading, writing, and thinking skills necessary to empower and enable them to realize and make their

2 own unique contributions. Prerequisites: none Integrated Math I Pending UC approval two-term/10 s Applied Math I Lab 5 elective Description: This course is the first of an integrated and investigative mathematics program. The overarching goal is to teach scholars how to learn math in an engaging way, showing connections to the real world and other subject areas such as science, art, and exercise and nutrition science. By using technology to collect and model data, scholars will be able to make conjectures about the data and develop a deep understanding of the mathematical principles involved. Topics for this introductory course include patterns of change and data; linear, exponential, and quadratic functions; matrices; geometric shapes; coordinate geometry; solving systems of equations; and simple probability. Prerequisite: none Exercise/Nutrition Science I Pending UC approval one-term/10 s Description: Exercise and Nutritional Science (ENS) 1 will provide scholars with the opportunity to learn and apply core concepts of individual fitness and wellness that lead to a healthy, active lifestyle. ENS 1 is designed to provide scholars with the knowledge and ability to become independent learners who initiate and monitor their own participation in physical activity. Opportunities are provided to improve health-related physical fitness, as well as to understand advanced concepts related to physical fitness and activity. There is a strong emphasis on individual fitness, individual wellness, refinement of motor skills, biomechanics, and individual practice and assessment. This course satisfies the Physical Education requirement as well as meeting the California Health Education Code requirements. Prerequisite: none Exercise /Nutrition Science II Pending UC approval one-term/10 s Description: Exercise and Nutritional Science (ENS) 2 will provide scholars with the opportunity to learn and build upon core concepts of fitness and wellness acquired in ENS 1. ENS 2 is designed to continue student learning and provide scholars with the knowledge and ability to attain and maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. The focus of ENS 2 is community-based health and wellness, with a continued emphasis on the individual. This course satisfies the Physical Education requirement as well as meeting the California Health Education Code requirements. Exploratory-Block N/A one-term/1

3 Description: Elective Block courses are designed to tap into the passions and interests of scholars and their teachers. Scholars will have the opportunity to design elective courses that reflect their individual and shared interests, meeting twice weekly for elective. Scholars will enroll in a new Exploratory Block course each term. A Advisory N/A one-term/no Description: In advisory, scholars will meet forty-five minutes each week to invest time to plan for their own college and career readiness. Scholars will engage in career exploration, as well as interact with each other, and their advisors to practice problem solving/restorative practice skills, and work to enhance Del Lago Academy s climate and culture. Grade 10: Theme: TBD Biochemistry I Pending UC approval two-terms/10 s Applied Science Lab I 5 elective Description: Biochemistry I is the first of a two-year sequence of classes. The class begins with an introduction to biotechnology and the basics of using laboratory equipment. Throughout the year, scholars will explore how topics in introductory biology and chemistry are applied to both academic and industrial settings. Scholars will also employ the scientific method, reflecting on the implications of scientific experimentation, data collection, data analysis, and bioscience applications. Students will begin to design and optimize hands-on laboratory experiments by the end of the course, as well as conduct year-long career exploration and stock investment projects. Bioethical dilemmas will be presented eight times throughout the course, giving scholars the opportunity to consider, reflect, and debate some of the most pressing scientific and social issues of our time. Prerequisite: Human Body System, Principles of Biomedical Science, Biology Humanities 10 Block Two-terms English/Language Arts Pending UC approval 10 s World History YES 10 s Description: (ELA) This course is all about argumentation and the use of rhetoric. Scholars will learn to gather information, identify arguments in course readings, and construct a well-considered and strategic argument for themselves. Scholars will learn to research effectively and express and articulate those findings in several different ways and opportunities, across disciplines and subject areas. The primary task will be to read; critically think and consider; write, articulate, and argue like an historian, scientist, and informed citizen. Description: (World History) Scholars will study major turning points that shaped the modern world, from the late eighteenth century through the present, including the cause and course of the two world wars. Tracing the rise of democratic

4 ideas and developing an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues, especially as they pertain to international relations, will be a major focus. Scholars will begin to extrapolate from the American experience that democratic ideals are often achieved at a high price, remain vulnerable, and are not practiced everywhere in the world. The intent is for scholars to develop an understanding of current world issues and relate them to their historical, geographical, political, economic, and cultural contexts, all using a hands-on, project-based approach to the study of history. Prerequisites: English/Language Arts 9 Integrated Math II Pending UC approval two-terms/10 s Applied Math II Lab 5 s Description: The second year of integrated math builds on the topics learned in the first year, as well as introducing new material. The focus on hands-on activities for collecting data, modeling, recognizing patterns, and forming conjectures continues throughout this course. Technology continues to play a key role in developing scholars understanding of mathematical principles. Topics for this second year course will include regression and correlation; probability distributions; vertex-edge graphs; trigonometry of all triangles; circles and circular functions; quadratic, exponential, rational, and polynomial functions; inequalities and linear programming; deductive and inductive reasoning; and similarity and congruence. Prerequisites: Integrated Math I Design Principles I Pending UC approval one-term/10 s Description: The Design Principles course will deal with the more holistic and universal aspects of creating a composition, be it a drawing, painting, or digital work. This course introduces scholars to the elements and lexicon of basic two and three-dimensional art, basic color theory, as well as their emotional and psychological impact. Scholars will also apply the use of object and color as psychological elements; and the combination of objects, color, and image for the successful integration of fine arts concepts. Scholars will be encouraged to complete both two-dimensional digital and three-dimensional projects. Developing the ability to identify the basic design principles and utilize the processes to successfully solve creative problems will be a critical emphasis in this course. Prerequisites: none Design Principles II Pending UC approval one-term/10 s Description: This is a continuation of the Design Principles I course. Scholars will explore advanced applications of imaging, perspective, and color to improve upon and effectively process and use elements and principles of design via learning tools such as gestalt design theory. In addition, scholars will evaluate the properties of material and its effect on the outcome of final production from an aesthetic and technical standpoint. Design projects will help scholars develop required skills for presentations and conceptualizations. Upon completion of Design Principles I and II, scholars will have created several portfolio-ready projects. Students are encouraged to complete both digital and built projects. Prerequisites: Design Principles I

5 Exploratory-Block N/A one-terms/1 s Description: Elective Block courses are designed to tap into the passions and interests of scholars and their teachers. Scholars will have the opportunity to design elective courses that reflect their individual and shared interests, meeting twice weekly for elective. Scholars will enroll in a new Exploratory Block course each term. Grade 11: Theme: TBD Biochemistry II Pending UC approval two-terms/10 s Applied Science Lab II 5 elective Description: Biochemistry II is the second course in the Biomedical Science Career Pathway. The purpose of the Biochemistry II course is to build on the biochemical conceptual and skill development from the Biochemistry I course with the goal that scholars are prepared for extended laboratory experiences in adult research facilities. In Biochemistry I, scholars focus on understanding how organisms, and the molecules that compose them, are studied and modified in ways that are beneficial to society. Biochemistry II scholars use more advanced techniques of genetic manipulation and molecular diagnostics. Biochemistry II, scholars will be better prepared for continued studies in all areas of bioscience and in STEM related fields at colleges and industry. Prerequisites: Biochemistry I Humanities 11 Block YES Two-terms English/Language Arts 10 s U.S. History 10 s Description: (ELA) In the ELA portion of this class, scholars will read and discuss American Literature, from the Oral Tradition through the Twentieth Century. Using a hands-on, project-based approach, scholars will study literature, the characteristics of the different eras and genres, including poetry, short stories, drama, essays, and novels. Vocabulary will be developed through the study of words from the core works and, at times, from outside lists. All of this will enable scholars to develop skills in reading literature, in oral language, and in writing. Conventions of language and grammar will be presented as part of the study of writing. The writing process will be integral to this course, emphasizing persuasive, interpretive, and

6 autobiographical writing styles. Description: (U.S. History) This literary analysis will also be coupled with a study of major turning points that shaped the modern world, from the late eighteenth century through the present, including the cause and course of the two world wars. Scholars study will trace the rise of democratic ideas in order to develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues, especially as they pertain to international relations, while using the same hands-on, project-based approach as in the ELA portion of the course. Prerequisites: ELA 9, 10 Integrated Math III Pending UC approval Two-terms/10 s Integrated Math III Lab 5 s Description: The first three courses in Core-Plus Mathematics provided a significant common core of broadly useful mathematics for all scholars. They were developed to prepare scholars for success in college, careers, and daily life in contemporary society. Course 4 continues scholars groundwork for success in college mathematics, with a focus on preparation for calculus. Formal and symbolic reasoning strategies, the hallmarks of advanced mathematics, are developed more fully in this course. Perquisites: Integrated Math I, II Spanish I YES one-term/10 s Description: This course is designed to develop each of the major communication skills: listening, speaking, and reading and writing. Major emphasis is on speaking and understanding as well as fostering an appreciation of the culture. Prerequisite: none Spanish for Spanish Speakers I YES one-term/10 s Description: This course is designed to develop Spanish speakers critical reading, writing, thinking, and other communication skills, preparing scholars for the complexities of life within the evolving contextual demands of the twenty first century. Prerequisite: none Spanish II YES one-term /10 s Description: This course is designed to continue the development of the major communication skills: listening, speaking, and reading and writing. Scholars will be able to express themselves at the basic level in present and past tenses. Additional emphasis

7 will focus on reading comprehension in the target language. Prerequisites: Spanish I Spanish For Spanish YES one-term/10 s Speakers II Description: This course is designed to expand on scholars previous understanding of the essential elements of literary and expository prose, research resources and methods, and language handling. Prerequisites: Spanish for Spanish Speakers I Internship/Practicum/ N/A one-term/s (TBD) Advanced Studies Description: Internships in the community are designed to improve work-readiness and time management skills as well as offer a view of occupational fields within a professional setting as an extension of career exploration and student advisory. Scholars will establish a record of work experience and earn academic. A community/business organization provides a learning laboratory for hands-on experience in the real working world. Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing X-Block N/A one-term/1 Description: Elective Block courses are designed to tap into the passions and interests of scholars and teachers. scholars have the opportunity to design elective courses that reflect their individual and shared interests, meeting twice weekly for elective. Scholars will enroll in a new Exploratory Block course each term. Grade 12: Theme: TBD Please Note: Twelfth grade affords greater flexibility for student course work choice; including

8 college level courses for, advanced/individualized study and practicum learning contracts. Keep in mind, however, in order to graduate from Del Lago Academy and meet UC A-G requirements, we encourage a fourth year of Mathematics, and you must complete coursework in Economics, Government, and English. Medical Interventions Pending UC approval one-term/10 s Description: Scholars will follow the life of a fictional family as they face a variety of medically related scenarios. Along the way, scholars will learn how medical interventions (immunology, surgery, medical devices, and pharmacology) are involved in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these different diseases. Scholars will also explore how to prevent and fight infection; sequence and evaluate the code in human DNA; prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. This course is a How To manual for maintaining overall health and homeostasis in the body, and is designed for 11th or 12th grade scholars. Prerequisites: Biochemistry I, II CNA/Home Health N/A one-term/10 s Certification Description: This course will provide entry-level training leading to nurse assistant and home health aid certification. Instruction covers basic nursing skills, medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, and ethics and safety. Included are classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences. Upon successful completion of both, scholars are qualified to take the state written and clinical examinations. Home Health Aide consists of 20 Intro to Aide & Agency Role; interpretation of medical and social needs of clients. Personal care services, nutrition, and cleaning and care tasks in the home are covered as well as changing bed linen, preparing meals, assisting in and out of bed, bathing, dressing, and grooming. Prerequisites: none Physics YES one-term/10 s Description: Physics is a college-preparatory lab-based course covering the activities and fields that involve the major areas within physics. The program emphasizes experiments from modern and classical principles of physics. The major areas studied will be mechanics, thermodynamics, wave and optics, electromagnetism, theory of relativity, and quantum mechanics. The goal of physics is to use a number of basic concepts, equations, and assumptions to make predictions and describe the physical world. Physics is a moderately rigorous course for the college bound student who likes to be actively involved with science and current technology. The course parallels the state framework requirements for high school level physics and meets UC acceptance as a laboratory science. Prerequisites: none

9 Humanities 12 Block YES two-terms English/Language Arts 10 s American Government 5 s Economics 5 s Description: (English 12) This course combines a strong historical emphasis with the study of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon Period to the Twentieth Century. Scholars will study poetic forms, drama, the essay, and fiction. Schoalrs will read and write critically about the literature covered and review the writing strategies, including interpretive, reflective, persuasive, and narrative compositions. In the process, scholars will review standard grammatical constructions and punctuation, and develop the vocabulary necessary for college level reading and writing. In addition, scholars will enhance their speaking and listening through discussion of the core literature. Description: (American Government) In this course, scholars will pursue a deeper understanding of the institutions of American government. Scholars will compare systems of government in the world today and analyze the history and changing interpretations of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the current state of the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches of government. An emphasis will be placed on analyzing the relationship among federal, state, and local governments, with particular attention paid to important historical documents such as the Federalist Papers. These standards represent the culmination of civic literacy as scholars prepare to vote, participate in community activities, and assume the responsibilities of citizenship. Description: (Economics) In addition to studying government in grade twelve, scholars will also master fundamental economic concepts, applying the tools (graphs, statistics, equations) from other subject areas to the understanding of operations and institutions of economic systems. Studied in an historic context are the basic economic principles of micro and macroeconomics, international economics, comparative economic systems, measurement, and methods. Prerequisites: ELA 9, 10, 11; World History, U.S. History Calculus YES one-term/10 s Description: This course is for advanced mathematical scholars only. Differential and integral calculus topics will be introduced. Derivatives of products, quotients, logarithmic and exponential functions, and trigonometric functions will be covered. Indefinite and definite integrals will be used to introduce areas under curves and volume of solids. Prerequisites: Integrated Math I, II, III Statistics YES one-term/10 s Description: This course is an introduction to statistics. Topics that will be covered include: probability, frequency distribution, graphs, permutations, combinations, normal distribution, sampling, chi square, and confidence intervals. Prerequisites: Integrated Math I, II, III Spanish III YES one-term/10 s

10 Description: This course is designed with an in-depth view of the Spanish language. Scholars will form complex sentence structures and sustain lengthy conversations. Communication skills are developed and enhanced. This course will provide an opportunity for scholars to gain insight into Spanish-speaking cultures. Prerequisites: Spanish I, II Spanish For Spanish Speakers III YES one-term/10 s Description: This course expands on scholars skills and knowledge developed in previous courses. Scholars at this level will be expected to address more challenging concepts, such as analyzing the clarity and consistency of political assumptions within a text, and applying the political approach of literary criticism. Prerequisites: Spanish for Spanish Speakers I, II Internship/Practicum N/A One-term/s (TBD) Advanced Study Description: Internships in the community are designed to improve work-readiness and time management skills as well as offer a view of occupational fields within a professional setting, as an extension of career exploration and student advisory.
