1 Analysis of Core Content Knowledge Curriculum s B.S. Elementary Education K-6 1. A brief description of the assessment and its use in the program (one sentence may be sufficient); William Carey University s School of Education has been approved by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) for B.S. in Elementary Education (K-6 th grades). The MDE has formulated the core content curriculum which all candidates must complete a minimum G.P.A. of 2.75 across 44 hours. Since the School of Education has included Health Education, the G.P.A. will be calculated at 47 hours. These candidates are well grounded in the content areas they will teach in the elementary school. The candidates are evaluated on the basis of their content knowledge in the core curriculum required by the university. This includes 6 credits English language arts (ACEI 2.1), 6 credits of literature; (ACEI 2.1), 11 credits of science (ACEI 2.2), 3 credits of mathematics (ACEI 2.3), 12 credits of social studies (including Psychology) (ACEI 2.4), 3 credits of fine arts (ACEI 2.5), and 3 credits of Physical Education and Health (ACEI 2.6/2.7). SOC 101 is a study of the theory and practice of sociology. PSC 201 is a survey of the structure and dynamic of the American polity. BIO 101 is a course introducing students to biological principles including; the chemistry of life; the structure and function of cells, tissues, and organisms; heredity; and ecology. This course includes a one semester hour laboratory experience. BIO 111 is an introduction to the biological sciences in which foundational principles and processes are emphasized, including cellular structure, metabolism, and function, as well as broader topics such as basic ecology and evolution. A brief analysis of the data findings: Core content grades for the past three years of program completers ( ) were analyzed across all seven areas with the following results. See Table 2. Total G.P.A Table Three describes the elementary education candidate data for by course and provides information for reviewers concerning the number of candidates who completed each core content knowledge course, the group average, and the range of scores. The total cohort averages by course were then aggregated by major content area: English Language Arts, Literature, Fine Arts, Social Studies (World History, United States History, Sociology, American Government, and Psychology), Speech Communication, Algebra, Health/Physical Education, and sciences (Biology, Physical Science, Earth Science). See Table Two for cohort means across three years. The group cohort data across courses for 6 P a g e B. S. E l e m e n t a r y E d u c a t i o n

7 showed 62 courses taken with a 3.30 total mean, and range of G.P.A. This indicates that the elementary education candidates were well prepared in the core content knowledge curriculum. This is an increase over when the Admission standard for entrance into Elementary Education was raised from 2.50 to Table 3. It also shows the range of course grades including those students who did not perform well (D=1.0 G.P.A.). The following breakdown indicates candidates not earning a C or higher: out of 609 grades only 9 scored below a C (1%); out of 1,143 grades only 10 scored below a C (2%); out of 852 grades only 7 scored below a C (1%).
