72 Bachelor of Science in Nursing The School of Nursing offers instruction leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) degree. Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX exam which is the State of Michigan registered nurse licensure examination.

Biomedical Sciences requires completion of BIO 111 and CHM 144/147, with an average GPA of 3.5 Social Work requires a minimum GPA of 2.80; a 28-credit pre-core set of courses in sociology, social work, biology, psychology and political science; experience in the human services field (employment or volunteer work including work completed for pre-core course SW 210); two letters of reference (one from a supervisor in a human services agency: and a personal written statement.

Each summer, students in anthropology have the opportunity to participate in archaeological digs in Israel. OU s Department of Political Science was selected from a national group of universities to be the threeyear editorial home of the Pi Sigma Alpha Undergraduate Journal of Politics.

95 Criteria for Admission Pre-major Standing Transfer students are admitted directly to the major if they have at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA. If students are between a 2.5 and 2.79, they will be admitted as a Candidate to the SECS. These students will need to meet established criteria to change their major. Major Standing Students apply for major standing once they have completed the math, science and core courses.

114 Elementary Education Now that school districts in Michigan must offer full-day kindergarten in order to receive full funding from the State, our Early Childhood program is becoming more and more popular. Students complete a practicum in the Lowry Center twice, in addition to field placements and student teaching in local school districts.

115 Criteria for Admission Pre-major Standing: Elementary Education - Admission to OU Major Standing: 2.80 cumulative GPA 3.0 or currently enrolled in EED 312/ in MTH 062 or equivalent 70 hours working with children Passed all 3 sections of the MTTC Professional Readiness Exam (or Basic Skills), or have ACT/MME scores that satisfy any of the sections

116 Availability for Major Program The professional course sequence for the Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Master of Arts in Teaching with Elementary Education certification is available at OU Macomb County. No professional education (i.e. pedagogy) coursework can be transferred in from any of the community colleges.

117 Notable Achievement The only classroom experience that many students at other institutions have is student teaching. Here at OU, students have a field placement in a classroom every semester that they are enrolled in education coursework. Also SEHS now has a partnership with the Avondale school district, OU students can take education courses inside of Avondale schools.

132 Points of Pride The BIS program is the most flexible option for transfer students as it utilizes all transferable credits allowed and students can select courses based on their career interests and goals. It is also popular amongst those receiving Michigan Works funding, since the program can be completed in two years (or less) if a student already holds an associate degree, or 62 transfer credits.
