6 REGULATORY INFORMATION FUEL STORAGE: Storage of Fuel in a Stationary Environment In Canada to safely and legally store fuel, the fuel system must be installed in accordance with the codes enforced by the municipality or province you are located in. Usually municipal authorities will refer to the National Fire Code ( html) and enforce CSA codes which call for a ULC approved tank that has integral containment (either a dike or a dual wall designed tank). There are several ULC Codes that a steel fuel tank can be built to, such as ULC-S601 and ULC-S643. A permit from the local jurisdiction having authority (i.e. the local municipal government fire marshal or environment ministry) is usually required. Generally requirements include rules about crash protection, distance of the tank from buildings, etc. Depending on the location (for example, near water ways) spill containment around accessories such as fuel pumps/nozzles and remote fill lines may be required. On federal lands additional requirements may be enforced. Aviation fueling systems require interior coatings and special dispense equipment. STANDBY FUEL TANKS CONTAINER TANKS SLIP TANKS FUEL EQUIPMENT FUEL TRANSPORT: Transport of Fuels on the road In Canada the transport of dangerous goods is governed by Transport Canada which publishes the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act'. The TDG Act specifies that a fuel tank must be manufactured to, and the design must be approved to, a few codes, for example CAN CGSB and CSA B In addition, the tank must be accurately placarded, and the driver must have Dangerous Goods Certification'. The following Exemptions are present in The TDG Act: Dangerous Goods Certification is not required when transporting diesel in amounts of 2000 litres or less. Transporting diesel in a container with a capacity of 450 Litres/99 Gallons or less the tank does not need to be an approved' means of containment. In each Province there are agencies that enforce the Transport Canada TDG Act. Consult the jurisdiction having authority in your area to confirm the above for your application. They will usually refer to the National Fire Code and call for a ULC Listed tank, of which there are several codes that apply, and the tanks can be steel or poly in construction. Dual wall tanks will be required for very large capacity tanks, in sensitive environments or where insurers are mandating dual wall. Contact the local fire office for further information. WASTE OIL: Storage of waste oil will require a ULC Listed dual wall tank for waste oil, which is a different code than for new oil. Consult the local authority (usually the Fire Commissioner) for more information. The National Fire Code will deal with this matter and is the best resource to start with ( nationalcodes.ca/eng/nfc/index.shtml). Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a mixture of 32.5% high purity Urea diluted in de-ionized water for use in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems.
