1 JOB PROFILE Job Title : Senior Dental Nurse (Luton Patch) Managed by : Operations Manager Accountable to : Operations Director Job Purpose : To undertake the day to day management of clinics and support the clinical teams in service delivery. This includes recruitment, training and line management responsibilities for dental nurses and dental receptionists and supervision of the Luton patch which incorporates Leighton Buzzard, Houghton Regis and Marsh Farm clinics. To undertake the organisational lead of the Community Dental Services (CDS) paediatric general anaesthetic services (GA) based at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital in Luton (L&D). The post holder will take the lead in timetabling sessions, and working with the SDN responsible for the additional needs GA, will ensure adequate cover is available. They will monitor the booking system ensuring effective use of theatre sessions and liaise with the theatre team at the L&D in order to promote and maintain good coordination and communications. To work with the SDN for mobile services in delivering CDS south mobile services within school settings. Dental care is provided in various settings across Bedfordshire, ie dental departments within Health Centres, acute hospitals, residential homes and mobile units. This encompasses a wide range of treatments for a broad client base which includes children, additional needs, phobics and the elderly. It is expected that the post will include normally 60% of the time working clinically. The post holder may be asked to undertake duties in neighbouring clinics and other Health Service establishments when required for holiday or sickness relief or temporary redeployment. Page 1 of 7

2 Duties & Responsibilities: 1. Communication & Relationship Skills Receive the patient into the department and prepare them for treatment. Reassure patients and explain dental procedures especially when there may be communication difficulties. Undertake reception duties when required i.e. greeting patients, answering the telephone, making appointments, explaining patient charges and collecting patient charges. Assist the Senior Dental Officer and the Operations Manager in the day to day running of the Dental Service. Work with other Senior Dental Nurses and support them where appropriate with their responsibilities. In line manager capacity, maintain consistent contact with staff within the patch. Carry out dental nursing and reception duties at dental clinics, mobile dental units, hospital sessions and domiciliary visits. Reassure patients and explain dental procedures, especially when there may be communication difficulties. 2. Analytical & Judgemental Decide when patients need to be seen urgently. Anticipate the operator s requirements across a broad range of clinical procedures. Work with other Senior Dental Nurses to ensure that there is an adequate level of nursing and reception cover for clinical operators across the whole Service. Ensure the accuracy of all monthly, termly and annual returns from dental nurses. 3. Planning & Organisational Skills Assist the operator in organising the days activities. Monitor day lists and appointment diary and update as necessary. Prepare the surgery for use at the beginning of the session and clear up at the end of the session. Arrange and assist the dentist with routine screenings, epidemiological surveys at schools and other establishments. Arrange for the timely supply of materials and laboratory work. Responsible for timetabling of dental nurses and dental reception staff in the Luton patch. Responsible for the timetabling of clinicians and dental nurses for the paediatric and special needs general anaesthetic sessions held at the L&D hospital. Inform Head Office of any unexpected absence which may affect delivery of CDS county wide service. Assist in the management of the sessional emergency dental service. 4. Physical Skills Prepare filling and impression materials, instruments, equipment, dressings and syringes as requested by the dentist. Page 2 of 7

3 Use equipment such as hand instruments, aspiration equipment, etc, in a manner which minimises the risk of cross infection or soft tissue injury. Maintain hand pieces, aspirators and other equipment. Process and mount x-ray films. Utilise keyboard skills for data entry on dental software programme. Prepare filling and impression materials, instruments, equipment, dressings and syringes Use equipment such as hand instruments, aspiration equipment, etc, in a manner which minimises risk of cross infection or soft tissue injury Maintain hand pieces, aspirators and other equipment Take, process and mount x-ray films. Run an appointment session for patients requiring dental radiographs if required. 5. Patient/Client Care Assist the clinician/therapist in the provision of dental treatment and supervise the patient until they are fit to leave the department including inhalation sedation and general anaesthesia. Provide pre and post-operative instructions for patients in agreement with the clinician. Accompany the clinician/therapist on domiciliary visits and/or working in a mobile dental unit, and assist them throughout treatment. Accompany the dentist on visits for screening, epidemiological surveys and assist throughout the procedures. Assist the clinician/therapist in the provision of dental treatment and to supervise the patient until they are fit to leave the department including inhalation sedation and general anaesthesia. Provide pre and post-operative instructions for patients in agreement with the clinician. Gain at least one of the following qualifications within the first two years of employment with CDS: i) Certificate for the examination in the care of the patient relating to treatment under conscious sedation as recognised by the awarding body, the National Examination Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) in conjunction with the national occupational standards as laid down by The Dental Nurse Standards and Training Advisory Board (DNSTAB) ii) Certificate in Dental Radiography 6. Policy & Service Development Follow and implement clinical policies and procedures to comply with legislation. Contribute to policy development. 7. Financial & Physical Resources Undertake general clerical duties including dealing with petty cash, the collection/banking of patients payments, selling dental aids to the public and to balance all monies received at the end of the day. Assist with the ordering of general and pharmaceutical supplies and processing of paperwork for payment. Responsible for maintaining, developing and monitoring systems and procedures for: Page 3 of 7

4 - stock control - accurate recording and stock control of oral health products, liaising with the Oral Health Promotion team as necessary - record keeping - administration (including calculating, collecting and banking of patients charges and money from the sale of oral hygiene aids - budgetary monitoring - reception and appointments - equipment maintenance in dental clinics - management of Health & Safety and accident prevention 8. Human Resources Demonstrate own activities or workplace routines to new or less experienced employees in own work area. Manage the dental nurses and reception staff designated to the patch including: - Co-ordinate their recruitment and appointment for the patch and support other Senior Dental Nurses in their role - Provide induction training and in service training - Take overall responsibility for training of newly appointed dental nurses and receptionists, working with the Clinical Workforce Development Manager - Undertake appraisal and development reviews - Deal with complaints and difficulties experienced by dental nurses and where necessary bring these to the notice of the Senior Dental Officer or Operations Manager. - Liaise with the Senior Dental Officer or Operations Manager in recommending approval for annual, study and special leave 9. Information Resources Record treatment, ie includes baseline charting, clinical treatments and periodontal charting from the operator s instructions. This will involve paper based and computer systems. Monitor the completion of National Health Service forms. Maintain a computerised display of nursing cover for staff to access at any of the services computer terminals. Research & Development Participate in CDS clinical governance programmes and other quality initiatives. Assist the Clinical Director with maintaining and running, development, monitoring and evaluation of CDS s dental services. To undertake radiography quality monitoring and produce reports. 11. 5 12. Physical Effort Sit or stand in a restricted position for a substantial proportion of the working day. Carry domiciliary equipment, push x-ray machine, when necessary. 13. Mental Effort Remain alert when assisting the dental operator or clinically supervising trainee dental nurses. 14. Emotional Effort Deal with patients with special needs, phobics, children and the elderly. 15. Working Conditions Decontaminate and handle instruments often contaminated with blood, saliva and debris. Maintain an aseptic working environment throughout, and clear up at the end of the session ensuring that high standards are maintained.
