2 ~OAHU~ ADULT FRIENDS FOR YOUTH Koapaka St., Suite B-290 Phone: Target Group: Youth Honolulu, HI Fax: Areas Served: Statewide Office Hours: 8:00 5:00 pm (M-F) Therapeutic prevention and mental health programs for high-risk youth. School Centered Program Group psychotherapy and counseling to students in school settings. Students are referred by school staff, and other students. Sessions are built to address issues on communication, poor grades, truancy, violence, alcohol and drugs. Neighborhood Centered Program Assists youth gangs as whole entities; counseling provided to address issues dealing with families, alcohol and drug abuse, violence, education, relationships, etc. Clinical Competency-Based Alternative Education (C-Base) Offered as an alternative education program through the Farrington Community School for Adults. Students who found learning in a traditional classroom difficult and/or have dropped out have an opportunity to get a high school diploma. High Risk Unlicensed Drivers Program Helps young people driving without a license to obtain a license and acquire safe driving habits. Student Transition Convention. A statewide program assisting students with the transition from elementary to middle/intermediate school and from childhood to adolescence. The Annual Student Transition Convention happens each spring on Oahu and Neighbor Islands (Big Island, Kauai, and Maui). Parenting Program The program offers parent education and support classes, as well as assistance to teen parents. Young Parent Groups These groups work with pregnant and parenting mothers and fathers who are often in their teens. Groups focus on how to parent and the developmental needs of the adolescent parents. Service involves working with young parents in a group and individually. Parent Education and Support Groups. Groups are open for anyone to participate, and helps parents explore productive solutions to parenting concerns. Special emphasis is placed on how to parent adolescents. Consultation, Presentations, Workshops. Arrangements can be made covering a range of topics from the growth and development of infants and toddlers to parent and adolescent power struggles. Arts, Culture, and an International 7-Aside Rugby Tournament. Cultural & sports experiences targeted toward youth of Pacific island backgrounds. ALU LIKE, INC Keawe Street Phone: Target Group: Indigenous Peoples Honolulu, HI Fax: Area Served: Statewide Office Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Assistance for Native Hawaiians in their efforts to achieve social and economic self-sufficiency. Pūlama I Nā Keiki Project (Cherish the Children) Home visiting and group services to help keiki from birth through five years to love learning and do well in school. Services on five islands are free and can begin before the baby is born. Native Hawaiian Child Care Assistance Project Provides subsidies for children of parents who work or go to school to help ensure quality child care. The Youth ATOD Prevention Project Services for youth (and their parents) ages on the dangers of substance abuse/use. Leadership training; alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) education; youth plan, organize and implement ATOD-free activities. Locations include Kaua`i, West Hawaii, Moloka`i, and Maui. Ke Ala Ho`olōkahi Project 2

3 Services for Nanakuli youth and their parents to educate them on the dangers of substance abuse/use. Provides on-going substance free activities planned, organized and implemented by youth. The Project also works to improve the educational outcomes and career potentail of Nanakuli 9 th and 10 th graders. Ho omānea Ōiwi (Employment and Training) Provides services including outreach, intake, assessment, career counseling, work experience, occupational skills training, educational & tuition assistance, tutoring and internships. Locations on Hawai`i, Maui, Kaua`i, Moloka`i, Lāna`i, and O`ahu. Ka Ipu Kā eo (Education and Training) Services include outreach, intake, assessment, career counseling, occupational skills training, educational and tuition assistance, tutoring, and internships. Maritime Stewardship Program; Ola Ka Honua: Volcanoes Alive Project; Native Hawaiian Career and Technical Education Program; and the Hana Lima Scholarship. Kūlia Like (Financial literacy) Teaches individuals and families skills to make financial and survival decisions towards self-sufficiency. Services assist with Information and Referral resources, Individual Development Account savings opportunities, and financial literacy training. Locations on Hawai`i, Maui, Kaua`i, Moloka`i, Lāna`i, and O`ahu. Kumu Kahi (Elderly Services Department) Nutritional and supportive services for Native Hawaiian elderly, 60+, on the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, Molokai and Oahu. The Native American Caregivers Support Program is a pilot project designed to establish quality standards, user-friendly manuals and practical toolkits for family caregivers of Native Hawaiians. AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY Nuuanu Ave. Phone: Target Group: All Ages Honolulu, HI Hr Cancer Info: (800) Fax: Programs focus on tobacco control, diet, physical activity, comprehensive school health education, and reducing the risks of skin cancer. Provides up-to-date cancer information, ACS patient service programs and referrals to other organizations. Online services include the Cancer Survivor's Network, Cancer Profiler, Community Resources Database and more. Also, provides support groups for parents with children who have heart problems, stroke survivors, and cardiac patients and their families. Asthma 101 provides basic asthma information for school personnel and organizations working with kids in recreational activities. Tobacco Provides adult smoking cessation programs, teen smoking cessation programs and tobacco prevention programs. Workplace Smoking Cessation Lung Helpline: LUNG-USA ( ). Lung Disease Better Breather s Club Hawaii provides information and resources on lung disease, help for people living with lung disease and raises awareness to prevent lung disease. AMERICAN RED CROSS, HAWAII CHAPTER Diamond Head Rd. Health and Safety Training in First Aid, CPR/Automated External Defibrillator, water safety, HIV education, youth programs, and nursing, as well as Nurse Aide Training and workplace safety programs. Youth Services Specialized programs utilizing hands-on activities and service learning opportunities. Programs focus on skill development related to personal and civic responsibility, healthy behavior, and preparedness. 3

4 BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF HONOLULU Kuwili St. #106 Phone: Target Group: Youth Honolulu, HI Fax: Area Served: Statewide Office Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (M-F) Non-profit organization focused on helping children become responsible adults by matching them in professionally supported one to one relationships with volunteer mentors. Community-Based Volunteer mentors meet with a child for a few hours each month. Volunteers and their Little Brother or Sister plan activities that both enjoy, like sports, watching movies or just hanging out. School-Based Volunteers mentor a child at an elementary school or community site for about an hour each week during the school year. Volunteers meet alongside other Bigs and Littles and play games, tutor or just talk with the child. Character and Leadership Development Helping Hawaii s boys and girls become responsible citizens and experience the democratic process. Education and Career Development Providing youth with opportunities for career exploration and educational enhancement. Health and Life Skills Programs address today s critical issues including resisting violence, drug abuse, obesity, and teen pregnancy. Arts & Culture Recognizing and encouraging self-expression, developing multicultural appreciation, and stimulating creative skills. Sports, Fitness and Recreation Developing fitness, promoting positive use of leisure time, reducing stress, instilling an appreciation for the environment, and building positive social skills. Scholarships A College Scholarship Program provides members with the opportunity to attend vocational schools, community colleges and public and private universities in Hawaii and the mainland. COALITION FOR A DRUG-FREE HAWAII N. Currently serving families in juvenile drug court. Prevention Resource Center Consists of a lending library of books and videos and a free clearinghouse of posters, pamphlets, and brochures. Designated to serve as Hawaii's State RADAR (Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource) Network Center. Strengthening Hawai i Families (SHF) SHF brings family members together to emphasize values, define relationships, and develop communication skills to help families prevent drug and alcohol abuse. Lei Ilima Programs and services to help girls from Ilima Intermediate School (Ewa Beach) develop healthy, drug-free lifestyles by strengthening relationships between girls their peers, families, school personnel, and members of the community. Second Step School based violence prevention program taught in several Kalihi schools. Teaches children to change their attitudes and reduce impulsive and aggressive behavior. The family component increases awareness and encourages parents to support and model positive behaviors. Hawai`i Girls Substance Abuse and HIV Prevention Project A gender-specific program for girls focusing on the relationship between substance use and risky behaviors. Teenline 521-TEEN (Oahu) or toll free (877) 521-TEEN (Statewide) Information and referral service for Hawaii s youth to access information and resouces covering youth related topics. Focuses on youth with the goal of enhancing their health and well being. EWAlution EWAlution mobilizes leadership and participation from all sectors of the community sponsoring and organizing many activities in the community to promote safe and healthy lifestyles, family strengthening, and community pride. Drug-Free Workplace On-site training for employees. COALITION FOR A TOBACCO FREE HAWAII S. The Coalition provides leadership for the tobacco control community, develops networks, helps coordinate tobacco control programs and builds community awareness. Projects include: Smoke-Free Homes, Creating Healthy Communities, and Make It Your Business. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION A+ Program x300 Affordable after-school child care services to children in public elementary schools, providing a safe and secure environment for children after school with a variety of activities. Family Support Services Parent Community Networking Centers PCNC s are school-based centers for families, volunteers, and the community to identify strengths, collaborate, and make decisions as a part of the Comprehensive Student Support System. Families for R.E.A.L. (Resources and Early Access to Learning) Parents and children participate in classes corresponding to their children's ages once a week for eight to nine weeks to gain and share information and skills. Each course is offered at least three times a year. There are regular courses for pregnant teens and parents with children from 0-5. FAST (Families and Schools Together) 5

6 FAST seeks to empower parents to be the primary prevention agents for their children through an eight to ten week multi-family group process followed by two years of parent - run sessions. The Parent Project Provides parents with concrete, straightforward, step-by-step solutions in dealing with children experiencing failing grades, school suspension, oppositional behavior, drug use, and other challenging behaviors. Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Program x315 Strengthens programs that work to prevent student drug use, involves parents, and coordinates with Federal, State, and community efforts and resources. Teen Alert Program (Oahu) Assists teen survivors of dating violence and their families with crisis counseling, resources and legal advocacy. The program visits Intermediate and high schools as well as youth serving organizations across the state to provide teens with education about healthy relationships and dating violence. Immigrant Services Program Services for immigrant women who are in need of legal and advocacy/case management services and victim assistance. Offers long-term foster care through offices in Honolulu and Hilo. Teams with foster parents to assist youth in developing knowledge and skills needed for self-sufficiency while maintaining a sense of connectedness and belonging in a family environment. Resource family support services Statewide support services including parent groups, Warm Line, training and mentoring. Hawaii Foster Youth Coalition (HFYC) Provides transitional assistance for existing foster youth through advocacy and advising. HFYC members serve as peer mentors and offer outreach to other foster youth of Hawai`i. Hawaii Attach Resource Cennection (HARC) Parents (birth, foster, adoptive), social workers, therapists, psychologists and other professionals from a variety of fields seek to increase community awareness about the attachment relationship through conferences and workshops. Its goal is to improve the care of children and adolescents with attachment problems. Project Visitation Purpose is to maintain relationships between brothers and sisters living in separate foster homes by coordinating visits that give siblings a chance to, strengthen their bonds and connect to one another. For all DHS resource families: foster, guardianship, kinship, and adoptive. Staffed from 8:30am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. After School Hours Program (ASHP) This program brings the Girl Scouts to girls in first through sixth grade from low-income families and communities, attending public schools that receive federal Title I funding. Girl Scouts Beyond Bars/Ho'omaka Hou Serves a segment of the girl population whose mothers are incarcerated. Girls are involved in traditional Girl Scout activities and work with correctional officials to help strengthen the bond between the girls and their moms. Advocacy The program advocates for a quality foster care system by sponsoring legislation and working with law makers and teaches parents how to advocate for the needs of their kids. Information Services A library of books and videos, a website and listserve serve to keep foster parents in touch with resources. Referral Services Mentor services provide one-to-one support and guidance in resolving difficult situations. Workshops & Trainings Throughout the year workshops with topics ranging from special needs children to advocacy are offered. HAWAII JOB CORPS CENTER Hihimanu St. Oahu: Target Group: Ages Waimanalo, HI Maui: Area Served: Statewide Oahu Fax: Admissions: A no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people through career technical and academic training. Career technical training is available in Automotive Repair, Business Technology, Culinary Arts, Facilities Maintenance, Health Occupations, Horticulture Worker, and Painting. 8

Some member agencies include the Bobby Benson Center, Palama Settlement, Waikiki Health Center and others across the state. HEALTHY MOTHERS, HEALTHY BABIES COALITION S.
