2 Because there are many new and developing applications of digital media that are currently and constantly evolving around the world, the phrase emerging media is used to articulate the dynamic nature of growing industry.?

3 NMFO has analyzed emerging media in the areas of entertainment, gaming, healthcare, and education The following slides will synthesize economic macrotrends and projections within these industrial sectors as they relate to emerging media

4 9 out of 10 of the top grossing films of 2011 were either full feature animation productions or feature films that were heavily dependant on computer generated imagery (CGI) with combined production budgets of and a combined revenue of over $7.8B[1]; Median income for multi-media artists and animators working in the motion picture industry is nearly $60K for those entering the profession and demand is expected to grow 8% per year in the entertainment sector[2]; NM already has world-class animators and a growing talent pool; NM offers unique technology resources to animation companies (NM LambdaRail, studios with green screen facilities, etc)

8 The same technical skill set used to generate computer generated images (CGI) for movies is being used for mobile app development; Digital media based mobile software applications ( mobile apps ) development and distribution expected to reach a market capitalization of $100B by 2015 [3] ; it is estimated that mobile device usage will overtake desktop Internet users by 2014 [4] Demand for employees with software development skills for mobile apps grew in 2010 by 160% and again in 2011 by 260% [6] ;

9 The worldwide gaming industry generated $65B in revenue in 2011 [7] and is expected to reach $82B by 2015 [8] ; Experts predict that digital media game development will be the fastest growing form of media in the next decade [9] ; Demand is growing for emerging media game developers; the number of university majors in game development has doubled in two years; the average pay for a video game developer is $71,354 [10] ; Serious Gaming is rapidly growing in the US and is being used for everything from training healthcare professionals to simulating nuclear disaster drills; 80% of all serious gaming and educational mobile apps are designed for K12 students; 55% of all colleges and universities in the US have instituted mobile applications software as a way of interacting with their students [11] ;

10 LANL has a growing team of animators and software engineers developing serious games for US national defense; LANL serious games train lab employees in everything from document security to responding to a nuclear disaster; Serious games developed at LANL are being used around the world to train US Homeland Security agents;

11 Serious games developed at Sandia train emergency first responders in simulated situations involving weapons of mass destruction in metropolitan areas; Another serious game platform is currently being used to train US boarder security agents; Researchers at Sandia use 3D CGI visualization tools to facilitate complex data modeling;

12 The use of mobile apps is predicted to have a significant impact on the healthcare system: (1) improved access to care, (2) improved patient engagement, (3) new provider business models, (4) reduced Medicare fraud, and (5) improved patient safety [5] Medical schools are employing serious gaming to train medical students on patient diagnostic techniques and medical procedures; Healthcare researchers are using 3D digital visualization techniques to find treatments and therapies to chronic medical conditions; chronic medical conditions account for 80% of healthcare costs in the US;

13 UNM s new Sandoval County Regional Medical Center is using emerging media in medical training, medical diagnostics, and surgical procedures; UNM invested in the innovative DaVinci virtual surgical system (one of the few in the world);

14 The use of CGI, mobile apps, serious games, and other digital media tools are predicted to become core elements to K-12 education; Research indicates that 55% of all colleges and universities in the US have instituted mobile applications software as a way of interacting with their students [35] A group of students at the University of New Mexico developed a serious game for mobile devices that helps teach college students lessons on the state s history and foreign languages [36] Miguel Gandert, UNM s director of Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media department has observed a sharp increase in students at UNM electing to pursue classes in emerging media development for games, mobile apps, and film making;
