We provided health screenings such as glucose, blood pressure and HIV testing for homeless populations in the Boise areas (Feb April, 2008 & 2009). Led and enlisted the assistance of nursing students in fundraisers for the local homeless and underprivileged populations as well as for those suffering in Darfur. An average of six soup sales and one basket raffle sale is completed per year to raise funds. ( ). During my senior year of nursing school, I developed, planned and implemented a health education program about first aid for sheepherders in the Southwest area of Idaho in order to promote health and prevent injuries. These classes are held during the winter months and have reached and educated over 200 sheepherders (2000 to present). This year s educational goals included more hands-on activities, educational brochures written in Spanish and directed to their reading level as well as free basic first-aid kits for the herders. In 2007, Idaho State University s accelerated nursing students became involved with the health education program by completing risk assessments and providing free and on-site health screenings: blood pressure and glucose levels as the herders are at high risk for hypertension, hyperlipidemia and diabetes mellitus. Herders who are identified with abnormal levels are taken (by the ranch s foreman) to an Emmett physician and prescribed medications or treatment necessary to keep their illness well managed. In both 2009 & 2010, ISU nursing students also contributed to the health of the herders by creating elaborate gardens that provided various nutrient dense vegetables and herbs and by Page 3
4 providing them with first aid kits, winter clothing, sunscreen lotion, hats, and fresh fruit. This short cultural immersion and service learning project continues to take place annually in the spring time (2007 present). In 2003, my goal was to have health screenings provided for the sheepherders in addition to the classes. This was achieved when I was able to make arrangements with Boise State University & La Buena Salud. La Buena Salud students provided services free of charge for the herders at their ranch in Letah, Emmett since the herders lack transportation. Health screenings included hearing, vision, blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol checks. Later, I was in charge of making the arrangements for the follow up needed by some of the herders whose cholesterol and glucose levels indicated the need for a complete health exam. In 2001, I worked with other nursing students to develop, plan and implement three mobile health fairs at three Migrant Camps in Southwest Idaho. We reached more than 1000 Hispanic Migrant farm workers. We also identified and provided services for eye disorders (pterygium & pingueculum), high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, immunization and nutrition, in coordination with the Southwest District Health Department, Terry Riley Health Services, Rotary Clubs of Boise & Nampa, Lions Club, several student organizations at Boise State University, media services and local Hispanic businesses in Boise. Because monetary funds were very limited, I helped raised over $1500 in order to make these services readily available and free of charge. Thanks to the volunteers and the institutions named above, the mobile health fairs were a success. Developed two separate curricula for distinct groups of learners: a unit on domestic violence among underprivileged Mexican-American women for undergraduate nursing students and a first-aid curriculum for sheepherders (summer of present). These curricula were implemented in I volunteered as a preceptor for Boise State University, Idaho State University, Northwest Nazarene College, and Oregon Health Science University nursing students. During the preceptorship, I helped nursing students fine tune their clinical skills as well as facilitated attainment of valuable real world experiences as they cared for patients in an acute care center (2002 to 2006). GIFT (Get Immunized Free on Tuesday) Clinic volunteer. Being a registered nurse and a trained GIFT volunteer since 2004, I helped provide vaccines free of charge for children of all ages at the Meridian clinic until this program ended in December of St. Luke s Regional Medical Center volunteer Spanish interpreter at Mother and Baby Care Unit (2000 to 2001), and Emergency Department (2000 to 2003) and various units throughout hospital (2000 to present). I participated in a multidisciplinary assessment of Garden City in collaboration with state government to support the construction of new Head Start building in Garden City, ID (2000). I presented an annual seminar for the Health Occupations class at Capital High School. The educational seminar provided students with college and nursing program information. I spoke about my experience as an undergraduate and graduate student. The information includes information about classes that helped me succeed in college, my training as a nurse and work as a graduate and orthopedic nurse at the hospital (1998 to 2004). I assisted with physical screenings for Head Start children of the Treasure Valley, at the Idaho Air National Guard (Gowen Field). About 250 to 300 children from many nationalities were screened for hearing, vision acuity, dental, blood pressure, and hematocrit level. I also helped as a Spanish interpreter (1999 to 2001) Page 4
