1 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL I welcome you to Jai Hind College with pride. It is an honour and a privilege to be the Principal of Jai Hind College, the College that stands for excellence and continuously sets the highest standards, the College that is an alma mater which all alumni look back to with fond memories, the College that has given this country many distinguished personalities and leaders in diverse fields. Catering to more than 5000 students, Jai Hind College is considered among the best and most sought after colleges in Mumbai city. We feel proud to provide quality education by equipping our students with skills, confidence and a positive approach with an all round development. The college is relentlessly striving to perceive and maintain academic excellence at the same time encourages the students to participate in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. An amiable environment at Jai Hind nurtures creativity, passion, resilience and leadership qualities among students for development of versatile personality. Jai Hind College started as an Arts and Science college initially in 1948 and was named Jai Hind College and Basantsing Institute of Science. Initially focus was on traditional subjects like Physics, Chemistry, mathematics and Botany in Science stream and Economics, Psychology, History, English, Political Science, philosophy in Arts stream. Today College offers many new courses and subjects. The faculty of Commerce was introduced in 1980, Microbiology in 1981,Life Sciences in 1992, BMS and Computer Science were introduced in 1999, BMM and Biotechnology in 2002, and Banking & Insurance (BBI) in 2003.Recent additions are Accounts and Finance ( BAF), Financial Markets (BFM). Jai Hind College is famous for its Junior and Undergraduate Students achieving Honours and Accolades in the State Board as well as University examinations. This year also University Topper was from Jai Hind College beside Top rankers in many Subjects. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to be known as Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. At Jai Hind we want to give our students International Exposure. We do have Students Exchange Programmes with Foreign Universities. Many Foreign Universities are interested in Tie Ups with Jai Hind. These collaborations will make it easy for Jai Hind students to go abroad to renowned Universities for further studies. Progress of an Institute depends mainly on performance of the students in academics, sports and cultural activities along with maintaining high values and ethics. I am Proud to say that our students are doing excellent in academics, sports and cultural activities with high values and ethics. Our governing body comprises of Educationists, Industrialists, Businessman and achievers in their chosen fields. The management is highly supportive for the overall development of the students and faculty. The management takes keen interest and stands behind any such Endeavour. LALVANI COLLEGE OF COMMERCE JUNIOR COLLEGE Arts, Science & Commerce The College was founded after the partition of the country by some of the ex-professors of the D. J. Sind College, Karachi and other educationists of Sind, who came and settled in Mumbai and formed themselves into a registered body called the Sind Educationists Association. The college is primarily meant for displaced linguistic minorities, but others are also admitted. MERIT CRITERIA FOR ADMISSIONN This college believes in admitting students of very high quality in its endeavour to promote an all-round development in a student, in addition to his/her academic progress. Every effort is made to inculcate a sense of discipline, values and culture. Accordingly, in addition to the marks at the last qualifying Public Examination, weightage is also given to participation/ performance in extra-curricular activities, sports, community service, location of residence, ward of staff member of the college etc. Name on the merit list does not guarantee admission. POLICY OF REFUND N The quantum of refund for cancellation of admission for Junior College will be governed by the rules of the Deputy Director of Education. However for the unaided courses (Computer Science & Electronics) the amounts deducted shall be as follows: Cancellation within a week from the date of Admission - Rs. 500/- Cancellation within a month from the date of Admission - Rs. 2000/- Cancellation after a month - No refund 4

5 FREESHIPS & SCHOLARSHIPS N There are a number of Freeships and Scholarships instituted by the Government, and by the college in addition to many by the Private Sector. Some of these are: National Merit Scholarship, State Govt. Open Merit Scholarship, N.C.E.R.T. Scholarship, Scholarship to B.C. Students, E.B.C. Scholarship, and Scholarship to Prim. & Sec. School Teacher's Children etc. Besides these, a number of scholarships instituted by individual Philanthropists & Trusts are also available for the students of the college. The college will be closed on Sundays and Public Holidays declared by the State Government and on such days as the Principal may declare from time to time. ATTENDANCE N 1. Punctuality and regularity of attendance will be strictly enforced. 2. Attention of the students is drawn to Regulation No. 88 of Maharashtra Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board Resolution 1977, according to which students are required to attend 75% of the working days in each term. STUDENTS WHOSE ATTENDANCE IS FOUND TO BE UNSATISFACTORY, WILL NOT ONLY LOSE THEIR ACADEMIC YEAR BUT WILL ALSO NOT BE RE-ADMITTED TO THE COLLEGE. A. COMPULSORY SUBJECT : 1. ENGLISH 2. 7 RULES REGARDING CHANGE OF SUBJECT & FACULTY N (F.Y.J.C. STD. XI) 1. Change of subject in the same faculty: Students of Std. XI, who wish to drop one subject and choose another subject from the options provided, can do so till 1 st August of the academic year. 2. Change of Faculty: By the end of the First Term, a Science student can change to Arts or Commerce. Similarly Commerce students can change to Arts faculty. But if the Arts or Commerce student desires to change to Science, he/she can do so not by the end of the First Term but only till 1 st August of the academic year. (S.Y.J.C. STD. XII) 1. Change of subject in the same faculty: Arts, Science and Commerce students of the above class can change their subjects in the same faculty from the options provided only till 1 st August of the academic year. 2. Change of Faculty : Arts and Commerce students of Std XI will not be permitted to take Science in Std XII but the students who had taken Science in Std. XI can change over to Arts or Commerce for Std. XII N.B. THE ABOVE CHANGE IN THE SUBJECT/FACULTY AT STD XI OR XII WILL BE PERMITTED ONLY AT THE DISCRETION OF THE PRINCIPAL SUBJECT TO THE AVAILABILITY OF SEATS. (v) (iv) COLLEGE EXAMINATIONS AND TESTS N 1. For the S.Y.J.C. Class there will be a Terminal examination towards the end of the First Term and a Preliminary examination prior to the Final examination which is conducted by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. IN ADDITION, FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE SCIENCE STUDENTS OF S.Y.J.C. CLASS, THE COLLEGE CONDUCTS REGULAR TESTS IN ALL THE SUBJECTS DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR, WHICH ARE COMPULSORY FOR ALL THE STUDENTS. 2. For the students of F.Y.J.C Commerce and Arts class following Examinations / Tests will be held in the course of the academic year: A. The Terminal Examination B. Two Unit Tests (one in each Term of the academic year) C. The Annual Examination 3. The evaluation and the promotion of a student of F.Y.J.C class will not be decided only on the marks obtained by him/ her at his /her annual Examination but on the average of the marks obtained by the students in the above mentioned Examinations/Tests, i.e. A+ B + C 3 4. The above 3 Examinations / Tests for the students of the F.Y.J.C. class are conducted by the College on behalf of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education in accordance with the rules and the regulations of the Board. 6. A student will not be allowed to sit for any examination if he/she has not paid the College fees / dues. N.B. i ) FOR THE STUDENTS OF F.Y.J.C. CLASS, A COMPUTERISED MARKSHEET OF THE RESULTS IS ISSUED BY THE COLLEGE TO EACH STUDENT AT THE END OF EACH OF THE ABOVE EXAMINATIONS/ TESTS. THE PARENTS ARE ADVISED TO CHECK THESE MARKSHEETS TO MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THEIR CHILD PERIODICALLY. 7

8 LIBRARY N The College has an up-to-date Library with books on academic subjects and also on subjects of general interest. Journals and Periodicals on various subjects are also available. The Library has a vast collection of nearly 65,000 books and a large part of this collection is available in the OPEN ACCESS section of the library that is designed as USER - FRIENDLY. The library also has fiction section which has a wide range of novels and other light reading catering to diverse interests. The library also offers book bank facilities for deserving students. Every student of the college can take advantage of the library. COUNSELLING SERVICE N The College provides counselling service by trained Psychologists. Students can take help from the counsellors for their personal and emotional problems. The Counsellors meet the students by prior appointment either individually or in a group on four days of the week. Counselling for International Education : Students can avail of the services of Counselors by prior appointment. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES N The College has the following Student Societies : 1. The Commerce Association ACHIEVERS NITE N The Achievers 1 Nite is organized in the IInd Term of the academic year to felicitate the academic scholars as Well as our outstanding students who have excelled in extra-curricular, co-curricular and sports activities of the college, in the Inter Collegiate, State, National & International levels. At this function, achievers of the last academic year and scholars of the current academic year are felicitated. MOBILE PHONES N In order to avoid disturbance to others, students are requested to use their mobile phones in a disciplined manner on the campus only. Mobile phones will have to be switched off when the student is in class and even in the corridors. Students are warned that the phone will be confiscated if it rings in the course of the lecture, or in the corridors of the college building and a penalty will be charged. 8

9 CONDUCT & DISCIPLINE N 1 Students are responsible to the Principal for their behaviour, both in and outside the College. They are prohibited from visiting any other College without the written permission of the Principal of the college. 2 Every student must always be decently and neatly dressed, befitting the academic environment. 3 Smoking is strictly prohibited in and around the College premises. 4 Students must maintain strict silence in the classroom, Library, Reading Room, Laboratories and in the corridors where classrooms are located. 5 Students must not loiter in the corridors when classes are going on. When they are free, they should go to the Reading Room, Library or the students' common room. 6 Students must not attend any class other than their own without prior permission of the professor concerned. 7 Students must take proper care of college property, and help in keeping the premises neat and clean. Students must not write on the blackboard, nor disfigure walls, tables or benches. Any willful damage to the property of the college will be dealt with as a breach of discipline. 8 No College Society can be founded without the written permission of the Principal. 9 No student shall start or join any outside organisation without the written permission of the Principal. 10 No person shall be invited to address a college meeting or Society or to occupy the chair at the college debate, meetings or functions without the previous permission of the Principal. 11 Students are not allowed to invite any outsider to the college or to the college canteen. 12 No student should, without the permission of the Principal, write to the Press or communicate any information to it about matters relating to college administration. 13 A student must not, directly or indirectly, do any act, which in the opinion of the Principal, is or may be detrimental to the working of the college or to the interest of the students or the maintenance of discipline. 14 If a student remains absent without leave for any length of time, his/her name is liable to be removed from the college rolls. 15 No student shall take private tuitions from any teacher of the College without the written permission of the Principal. 16 Failure to observe any of the above rules will call for disciplinary action against the student. 9

10 CODE OF CONDUCT N The College expects every student to abide by the following Code of Conduct:- 1) Identity Card: a) Students must have their identity Card duly filled in and signed. Students must wear their Identity Card when they are in the college premises. b) Transfer of I. D. Cards is a criminal offence. The student will be liable to expulsion from the college. 2) Littering in the classrooms, corridors & the campus is prohibited. Please use the dustbins provided all around. Offenders will be penalised. 3) Sitting on the vehicles in the college compound or on A-Road is strictly prohibited. 4) Loitering or Crowding on A-Road is also prohibited. Students are required to remain in the college campus during their free hours. 5) Mobile Phones if carried by the students should be switched off while in classroom, library & corridors of the college. If these instructions are not followed, the instrument will be confiscated and the concerned student will also be levied fine. 6) Anti-Ragging act: Ragging is banned in this institution. A student involving in any such act will be expelled from the college and in addition may undergo imprisonment and fine. 10

Courses COURSES OF INSTRUCTION N The College is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and prepares students for courses leading to the degree of B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.M.S., B.M.M., B.Com (Banking & Insurance), B.Com (Accounts & Finance) & B.Com (Financial Markets) of the University of Mumbai. Admissions to M.Sc. (Chemistry) & Ph.D (Botany) are also made under the Post-Graduate Scheme of the University of Mumbai. 13 S.Y.B.A. Eight Subjects (units) are to be offered by the applicant. A. Compulsory Subject: 1. Foundation Course - II B. Optional Subjects : The Subject combination will be the same as offered by the student at F.Y.B.A. class because a student is required to continue with the same subject combination as per University rules. Book-keeping and Accountancy Six units are to be offered by the applicant. T.Y.B.A. A student can offer 1 Major subject ( 6 units ) or 2 Part - Major subjects (3 units each ) from amongst the subject combination which the student has offered at F. Y. and S.Y.B.A. classes. With 1 Major subject a student has to offer 2 subject-related Applied Components, whereas with 2 part-major subjects, 1 Applied Component for each of the 2 subjects has to be offered by the student. 17 POLICY OF REFUND N The quantum of refund for cancellation of admission for Degree College will be governed by the rules of the University of Mumbai. Punctuality and regularity of attendance will be strictly enforced at 75% attendance in each term of the academic year. Students who fail to maintain 75% attendance in each academic year, will not be granted term & thereby lose a year. Attendance at all the examinations is compulsory. There will be one examination in each term for determining the progress of the student. 2. In this connection the attention of the students is invited to the following ordinances of the University of Mumbai The minimum attendance necessary for keeping terms will be as under: First Term Second Term Three fourth of the days on which lectures are delivered Three fourth of the days on which lectures are delivered To keep the terms at college, an undergraduate must complete to the satisfaction of the Principal the course of study at the college prescribed for such terms for the class to which such undergraduate belongs. 3. For TY BA, BSc., BCom students : To evaluate progress, first erminal and preliminary examination will be conducted by the college. These periodic exercises prepare students better for University examination & furnish information which is relevant for the principal to allow the student to keep terms and to appear for the University Examination. 4. Students will not be granted terms nor allowed to attempt the University Exams unless their journals in all of the subjects, where practicals are prescribed, are certified by the departments concerned. 5. Enrolment to the Higher Class : A student having passed his/her examination cannot claim automatic admission to the higher class, as a matter of right. His/Her admission to the higher class will be subject to proper behavior and requisite attendance during the year in College and further to the availability of seats in the higher class. Students who have failed in both FY & SY but have been allowed to keep terms (ATKT) are not entitled to seek admission to the third year as per University Rules. 6. STUDENTS WHOSE ATTENDANCE IS FOUND TO BE UNSATISFACTORY MAY NOT BE ADMITTED TO THIS COLLEGE IN THE SECOND TERM OR THE SUBSEQUENT ACADEMIC YEAR AS THE CASE MAY BE. 7. STUDENTS INVOLVED IN ANY ACT OF INDISCIPLINE OR MISCONDUCT WILL NOT BE ADMITTED TO THE COLLEGE IN THE SECOND TERM OR THE NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR, AS THE CASE MAY BE. 24

25 EXAMINATION PATTERN N Examinations of the First Year and Second Year Arts, Commerce and Science classes are conducted by the college on behalf of the University of Mumbai as per the guidelines issued by the University in this regard, The University of Mumbai has introduced the Credit based Semester & Grading System wef the academic year In this newly introduced Credit based Semester and Grading System, the assessment of a student is through a scheme of Internal Assesment (IA) and a semester End examination. The semester- end exam is for 60 marks and of 2 hour duration. The internal assessment is a continuous evaluation with 2 class Tests/Assignments and 1 assignment /test of 10 marks each per semester. Class participation and conduct each carry 5 marks. For students who have missed 1 or 2 tests/assignments, only one additional test/assignment will be administered. If a student is absent in all tests & assignments of a course, he/she is declared fail in IA of that course. A student passes a Course (subject/ paper/ practical) if he/she scores a minimum of 40% in each course with a minimum of 40% in internal assessment (16 marks) & 40% (24 marks) in semester end exam. A student fails in a course if he/she fails in IA and/or semester end exam or is absent. A student is eligible to appear for Additional Examination if he/she has failed in course/s or was absent for an examination on medical grounds or was representing college/university in sports/nss/ncc/ cultural activity. A student who is absent is required to submit an application to the principal within 8 days of the relevant examination, requesting permission for additional exam. A student who has failed in a course/s needs to appear only in the failed component/s. For Additional examination of IA, the student will be required to submit a project of 40 marks for the course in which he has failed. The student will be issued a Report Card at the end of each semester where the performance will be graded on a seven point grading system (from Grade 0- >70% to Grade F- FAILURE) Promotion from Semester I to II / Semester III to IV is automatic. The ATKT(Allowed to keep terms) rules will be as per university directives. FREESHIPSN Details of various freeships and scholarships instituted by the Government and by the college will be displayed on the college Notice-Board. SCHOLARSHIPSN There are a number of Freeships and Scholarships instituted by the Govt, and by the college in addition to many by the Private Sector. Some of these are: National Merit Scholarship, State Govt. Open Merit Scholarship, N.C.E.R.T. Scholarship, Scholarship to B.C. Students, E.B.C. Scholarship, Scholarship to Prim. & Sec. School Teacher's Children etc. Sumitomo Trading Corporation of Japan has instituted Scholarships for meritorious students from F.Y., S.Y. & T.Y. degree classes. A total of 30 students of the degree college will be the recipients of this coveted Scholarship of US $ 300 each, for their academic excellence. Jai Hind College is the only College in Mumbai selected for this Scholarship. Also several KPMG scholarships have been instituted for academically deserving and needy students of Degree College. Priyadarshani Academy also offers scholarships to students with diverse interests and capabilities. PLACEMENT CELLN The Placement Cell is run by the students and it is their responsibility to contact companies, get relevant job profiles and finally arrange for the company to conduct its pre-placement talk, screening, selection and recruitment. The process also includes extensive online as well as mobile phone text communication to facilitate better two-way information flow. The various faculties in the college each has its own representative who can target companies and profiles that are more relevant to their particular field. More than 40 companies visit the campus during the year and the pay offered has been at par with industry norms. 25

A student involving in any such act will be expelled from the college and in addition may undergo imprisonment and fine. A student found guilty of ragging will face cancellation of admission, suspension, expulsion or withholding results. There is also a provision for collective punishment when persons committing or abetting ragging are not identified. IDENTITY CARDN After admission, each student will be given his/her Identity card, which the student must fill up, sign and affix his/her photograph & then obtain the college stamp & the signature of the Principal. Students are required to carry the College Identity Card on their person without fail as they are required to present this card for inspection at the time of entry to the college. No student will be allowed to enter the college premises without the college identity Card. They are further required to present their Identity Card as and when demanded by any college official.
