It includes a mix of several disciplines of study that when combined, provide a basis f the general knowledge and skills required to perfm the careful investigation of evidence obtained from computers and computer systems. In addition, this maj provides the knowledge and skills required by computer netwk specialists involved in the tasks of securing computer systems and protecting infmation wkers. The Certificate of Achievement can be obtained upon completion of the 34 unit maj listed below. 2 Criminal Justice, Crections This program offers ce and selective courses which provide the student with a base of knowledge and proficiencies in the area of crections. The program operates with the cooperation and participation of local crections agencies. All instructs in the program have experience in the crections field. Courses are scheduled both day and evening to accommodate full-time part-time students seeking to acquire upgrade skills in the crections field. The Certificate of Achievement can be obtained upon completion of the 30-unit maj listed below. The Associate in Science Degree can be obtained upon completion of 60 units, including the maj, general education requirements, and electives. All courses in the maj must be completed with a grade of C better a P if the course is taken on a pass-no pass basis. Introduction to Criminal Justice presents an overview of infmal and fmal means of social control. It is a study of the histy, evolution, philosophy, structure, operation and role of the criminal justice system and its component sub-systems (law enfcement, courts, crections). It also exples the histy of the U.S. Constitution and application of constitutional principles; theies of crime causation and criminal behavi. Another component of this course is the study of professional ethics, education and training f professionals in the criminal justice system. Required f all Criminal Justice majs. CJ 002 Concepts of Criminal Law standards; CJ 001. A study of the histy, philosophy and development of law and various legal systems; case law and legal research; cpus delicti, mental elements, capacity to commit crimes, and defenses; classification of crimes and penalties; elements of maj crimes. 126
4 CJ 011 Community Relations standards. An explation of actual and perceived special roles of criminal justice agencies and individual practitioners; interrelationships and role expectations of criminal justice practitioners and various individuals and groups; propaganda and pressure groups. Principal emphasis will be placed upon the development of the professional image of the criminal justice system and upon development of positive relationships between members of the criminal justice system and the public. Three hours lecture. CJ 050 Substantive Law Course Advisies: CJ 002; SCC minimum English and math standards. A detailed study of statuty law and collary case law commonly used by criminal justice practitioners, with emphasis on Califnia Penal, Welfare and Institutions, Vehicle, and Business and Professions Codes. Three hours lecture. CJ 051 Criminal Investigations standards; CJ 001. Fundamentals of investigation, crime scene search and recding, collection and preservation of evidence, scientific aid; interviews and interrogation, followup and case preparation. CJ 052 Investigative Rept Writing Course Advisy: Eligibility f ENGL 001; CJ 001; CJ 002;CJ 051. Presents investigative rept writing in criminal justice relative to police, probation, institutional and parole activities. Includes practical experience in preparing field notes, statements, and repts. CJ 053 Legal Aspects of Evidence standards; CJ 001. A study of the igin, development, philosophy and constitutional basics of evidence; constitutional and procedural considerations affecting arrest, search and seizure; kinds of degrees of evidence and rules governing admissibility; judicial decisions interpreting individual rights and case studies. CJ 054 Patrol Procedures standards; CJ 001. Presents the responsibilities, techniques and methods of modern police patrol. CJ 055 Traffic Control standards; CJ 001. A study of traffic law enfcement, regulations and control; fundamentals of traffic accident investigation, and an overview of the Califnia Vehicle Code. CJ 056 Juvenile Procedures standards; CRIMJ 1. Presents the ganization, function, and jurisdiction of juvenile agencies; the processing and detention of juveniles; juvenile case disposition; juvenile statutes and court procedures. CJ 057 Criminal Justice Career Development standards; CJ 001. Examines criminal justice career positions, employment standards and current occupational opptunities in the field. Includes practical aspects of various jobs and provides infmation and practice in entrance examination taking, al interviews, and general preparation f various occupations within the criminal justice field. CJ 058 Fundamentals of Crime and Delinquency standards; CJ 001. Introduction to maj types of criminal behavi, patterns of career offenders, facts which contribute to the production of criminality of delinquency. Includes methods used in dealing with violats in the justice system; the changing roles of police courts and aftercare process of sentence, probation, prisons, and parole; changes of the law in crime control and treatment processes. CJ 059 Interviewing and Counseling standards; CJ 001. Overview of the interviewing and counseling techniques available to practitioners in law enfcement, the courts, and crections emphasizing communication and practical skills. CJ 060 Probation and Parole standards; CJ 001; CJ 058. Presents the philosophy and histy of crectional services. A survey of the crectional sub-systems of institutions by type and function, probation concepts and parole operations. A discussion of crectional employee responsibilities as applied to offender behavi modifications through supervisy control techniques. Covers rehabilitation goals as they affect individual and intimate cultural groups in both confined and field settings. 127
5 CJ 061 State and Local Crectional Institutions Course Advisies: SCC minimum English standards; CJ 058. Provides theetical and practical methods and solutions f achieving effectiveness in the various leadership crectional institutional programs. CJ 062 Legal Aspects of Crection standards; CJ 058. Presents the legal aspects of crections and code provisions relative to all phases of the crectional system. CJ 064 Principles and Procedures of the Criminal Justice System standards; CJ 001. Detailed study of the role and responsibility of each sub-system within the criminal justice system; an examination of the philosophy, histy, structure, operation and interrelation of each sub-system component; a description of procedure from initial entry of the individual into the system to the final disposition. CJ to Vocational Wk Experience: Crections Course Advisy: CJ 001. Volunteer service in a variety of governmental and private criminal justice agencies related to Crections. One unit of credit may be earned f each 75 hours paid 60 hours unapid wk per semester to a maximum of 3 units per semester. Students enrolled in CJ 091 may not enroll in CJ 090 during the same semester. This is a credit/no credit only course. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 units, including initial enrollment. NOTE: Combined units f all wk experience courses shall not exceed 12. One hour lecture and five to twenty hours weekly by arrangement. To determine the crect number of units in which to enroll, refer to the following fmula f paid employment*: Full Semester Sections: 1 unit = 5 hours per week 2 units = 10 hours per week 3 units = 15 hours per week *unpaid wk requires fewer hours per week. CJ Special Topics These courses, numbered 048, 098, 148 depending upon their transferability, are courses of contempary interest centered on changing knowledge and imptant issues in the field.
