UNDERGRADUATE PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND KINESIOLOGY EDUCATORS CONFERENCE INCLUSION, RESEARCH AND A PRAGMATIC APPROACH May 6, :00am - 4:00pm Capilano University

WELCOME Welcome to Capilano University and UPEKE 2015 Capilano University is proud to be the host partner for the second BCPEKA Undergraduate Physical Education and Kinesiology Educators (UPEKE) conference. As a teaching university, a learning university, we are dedicated to meaningful educational experiences that have a lasting impact on students, academic programming that provides the preparation necessary to survive and thrive, and pedagogical practices that address the particulars of ever-more-specialized careers operating within an every-expanding, increasingly-complex, and constantly changing world. As our Academic and Strategic Plans demonstrate, we are an institution committed to health and wellness, teaching and learning, connection and collaboration. So hosting a group of distinguished educators dedicated to best practices in the teaching of health in and to our communities could not be timelier, and its importance cannot be overstated. Articulation Committees and conferences such as UPEKE play a critical role in BC Post-Secondary Education; they allow faculty to share information and engage in curricular discussion, foster collaboration and debate among colleagues throughout the province. We are delighted to welcome you to Capilano University, and look forward to hearing more about the good work and vision that will undoubtedly result from UPEKE 2015! Cordially, Richard Gale, Ph. D Vice President, Academic and Provost Capilano University 1

CONFERENCE MISSION As undergraduate educators in Physical Education and Kinesiology it is imperative that we base our teaching on sound, evidence-based practices. We hope that this conference will explore how we employ best practice teaching strategies in the classrooms, foster various research pathways, and enhance learning with an evolving classroom environment. Our conference mission is to create an interdisciplinary conference related to undergraduate Physical Education and Kinesiology Education in British Columbia. The conference will focus on topics of interest to postsecondary educators with a focus on developing professional networks and forwarding undergraduate PE and Kinesiology curriculum and pedagogy in British Columbia. This conference is co-hosted by the British Columbia Physical Education and Kinesiology (BCPEKA) Articulation Committee and the School of Human Kinetics at Capilano University. KEYNOTE SPEAKER Universal Design and Accessibility: Contributing to a Better Learning Experience for All Dr. Maureen Wideman University of the Fraser Valley Dr. Maureen Wideman is the Director of Teaching and Learning at UFV. She has applied her knowledge and expertise in a number of areas including faculty development, curriculum design, learning with technology and inclusive learning environments. 3 She arrived from Ontario earlier this year where she had been working in educational development. She has taught post-secondary courses in traditional, hybrid and online formats, and has managed a service department supporting students with disabilities. Maureen has a PhD in Education from the University of Toronto in curriculum, teaching and learning, a master of science in education in online teaching and learning, a master of arts in Canadian studies and a bachelor s degree in journalism.

INCLUSION RESEARCH PANEL OVERVIEW This session will examine various methods and strategies of research used to increase the engagement and enjoyment of the student. It will cover a variety of topics including classroom, lab and field based research strategies. Time permitting, the panelists will engage in a general discussion regarding student engagement and learning through research. SCHEDULE: 10:30AM -12:00PM A Snapshot of Well-being of Post-Secondary Kinesiology Instructors in British Columbia: A Mixed Methods Study Speaker: Ann Holmes, College of New Caledonia This study examined the current well-being practices and personal values of post-secondary kinesiology instructors in British Columbia. First, using an online survey, a general picture of the personal habits of physical activity and wellness, health status and challenges, job and life satisfaction, work-life balance, and basic demographic information was reported. In the second phase of research, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted to understand the context of the decision to pursue kinesiology as an academic field (in terms of the experiences and role of physical activity during youth), the career pathway to teaching kinesiology at the post-secondary level, how values and experiences are lived and regarded in the current job, and offer overall reflections about life and career satisfaction. Creating Conditions for Well-being in Learning Environments Speaker: Alisa Stanton, Simon Fraser University This presentation will provide a brief overview of Simon Fraser University s Well-being in Learning Environments project. The project is a partnership between Health Promotion and the Teaching and Learning Centre and focuses on how faculty members and instructors can create conditions for well-being in learning environments through teaching practices. The initiative focuses on 10 conditions for well-being, inclusivity being one of these. The project also includes a research partnership to explore correlations between learning experiences and well-being. 4 Institutional Research: Educational Research & University Program Themes Speaker: Frank DiPuma, Capilano University Institutional Research as a support unit at Capilano University provides data and information in support of the institutional mission and decision making. Although not often part of the official mandate of IR, it also supports student research in the context of classroom learning. While there are a number of student research appropriate tools available, most frequently students seek advice about survey research and survey tools. Depending on the research questions asked, surveys may not be the best choice and he will often direct students toward focus groups, direct observation or quasi-experimental designs. All research involves ethical considerations. Students should be aware of ethics guidelines in human subjects research as well as BC FOIPOP regulations and issues of informed consent.

BREAKOUT PANELS FACILITATION OBJECTIVES The purpose of the course breakout sessions are to allow for discussion of specific course content, evaluation, and teaching methodologies within the field of Kinesiology. It is also an opportunity to network with instructors from around the province and create common or centralized resources for the delivery of specific courses. SUGGESTED GUIDELINES/FORMAT Review objectives of session (above) Introduction of attendees, institution, course titles at institution, etc. Facilitated discussion of group on topics including content, evaluation & best practices Circulate contact information sheet and determine possibility of shared resources and how to organize SCHEDULE 1:00-2:15 - BREAKOUT SESSION #1 Motor Learning - BR 161 Facilitator: Alison Gill and Karine Duval (Douglas) Exercise Prescription - BR 166 Facilitator: Ken Anderson (Douglas) Sport Performance - BR 168 Facilitator: Ed Lunn (Douglas) 2:15-2:45 - COFFEE BREAK - LB 321 2:45-4:00 - BREAKOUT SESSION #2 Growth and Development - BR 161 Facilitator: Susan Todd (Langara College) Nutrition - BR 166 Facilitator: Sally Willis Stewart (UBC-O) CSEP Certifications - BR 168 Facilitator: Kirstin Lane (UBC-O) 5
