3 Title of minor: Minor European Union Law - Institutional EU law and visit to EU-institutions in Brussels (4 EC) - Internal market and the free movements (3 EC) - EU Common Policies (2 EC) - Competition Law (2 EC) - Legal English (1 EC) - Project Transposition of EU Law in National Law (3 EC) Content of courses: Institutional EU law and visit to EU-institutions in Brussels This course focuses on the EU-Treaties, history and principles of the European Union, the EUinstitutions and the decision-making procedures, sources and legal acts of EU Law, the Court of Justice and judicial review and human rights. Training in legal skills is part of the course: the aim is to find relevant legislation and case law in EU databases, to read and analyse EU legislation and case law and to use this information in practical cases. We will also visit EU-institutions in Brussels: European Parliament, Council of the European Union, European Commission. Internal market and the free movements In this course students will be introduced to the history and principles of the internal market, EU citizenship and residence and free movement of goods, workers and services. Aim of this course is to understand and apply the rules of free movement law in practical cases and to use relevant case law to solve cases. EU Common Policies In this course students will get an overview of policy areas, categories and areas of competence and the relevant principles (conferral, subsidiarity and proportionality). Students give presentations on policy topics, take part in debates on statements in current matters and write an essay about the EU as a political union. During this course we will visit Eurojust and the Peace Palace (International Court of Justice, Permanent Court of Arbitration) in The Hague. Competition Law This course focuses on the history and principles of competition law, cartels and restrictive agreements, abuse of a dominant position and mergers and enforcement of EU competition law. Aim of this course is to understand and apply the rules of competition law in practical cases and to use relevant case law to solve cases. Legal English In this course students learn to write a (formal) legal letter of advice in English, participate in a debate in English (persuasive and convincing) and learn to use legal keywords and legal terminology correctly. Project Transposition of EU Law in National Law In this project students will examine, in groups of four students, two specific topics (directives): where and how European legislation is transposed into national law and daily practice. Students will work in the role of a legal assistant at an advocacy or interest-group for a specific sector or branch which is applicable to the relevant directive. For their members students will write a report and will give a presentation to the members regarding their practical findings. 3

4 Title of minor: Minor Global Awareness. Sustainable Development in a Global Perspective Preparation programme (online) The preparation programme contains two assignments: 1. Letter of motivation and 2. Preparation project country. This online programme runs from half of April until half of June. Basic programme (including orientation week, Leiden, the Netherlands, 5 weeks) Subjects and topics that are addressed in the basic programme are: Week 1: Introduction, self-analysis, getting acquainted with each other, development issues and stakeholders, cultural diversity, presentations of the projects, first draft of objectives for action plan, activities in projects, history and trends in development cooperation. Week 2: Your own health, search for literature, culture, tradition and development, lobbying, advocacy and networking, human rights and violation of human rights, film Mohadee, intercultural communication. Week 3: Entrepreneurship, participation and participatory approaches I and II, the concept of sustainability, community development. Week 4: Inclusive development, (adult) education and development, vulnerable groups, globalisation and environment, Week 5: First aid, culture shock, dealing with conflicts, refugees and migration, presentations blueprint. Internship (abroad, 12 weeks) The internship is an important part of this minor. After the basic programme, the students spend 12 weeks at one of the selected projects abroad. Completion programme (Leiden, the Netherlands, 2 weeks) Subjects and topics that are addressed in the completion programme are:come back meeting, feedback sessions, presentations, individual assessments, certification. In order to obtain the 30 EC of the minor Global Awareness, students must pass several assessments (also see next page). 6 Title of minor: Minor Innovative Molecular Diagnostics - DNA diagnostics (6 EC) - Quality issues and statistics (3 EC) - Article with data analysis (1 EC) - HPLC and protein isolation (2 EC) - Proteomics and mass spectrometry (3 EC) - Internship (15 EC) Content of courses: DNA diagnostics DNA diagnostics focuses on the use of DNA techniques, which are widely used in the field. Upon completion, students are for instance capable of using several mutation detection methods. Also techniques like Methylation Specific PCR, High Resolution Melting Curve analysis, MLPA and Next generation DNA sequencing are dealt with. We cooperate with the Leiden University Medical Centre to diagnose the thalassemia of a patient using HPLC and multiplex PCR. Furthermore, a case of outbreak of infection disease will be investigated. We published this experiment in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education 40, , 2012 (Morsink et al). Finally, students will be introduced to primer and probe design, the use of a genome browser and other resources online. Quality issues and statistics In this course, students will be introduced to the field of laboratory quality matters and statistics. Students will perform an assignment to assess the quality of certain aspects in the labs of University of Applied Sciences Leiden. Statistics will be coupled to data taken from literature or practices. Writing a Standard Operation Procedure forms part of the course. Article with data analysis Students get a personal assignment that includes some raw data and half an article containing title, introduction and material and methods. Students must analyze the data and write the results and discussion sections of the article. In addition, a small summary must be added. HPLC and protein isolation HPLC and protein isolation will introduce students to protein chemistry in the field of molecular diagnostics. After following the course, students are capable of using several protein isolation methods as well as protein identification methods. In the course, HPLC is used in combination with various identification methods. Protein isolation techniques are gel filtration, ion-exchange chromatography and affinity chromatography. The techniques that are used for protein characterization are SPE-gels and enzyme assays. Students will isolate peroxidase from plants and myoglobin from red meat. Proteomics and mass spectrometry In this course students will get tuition on the development of techniques involved in studies of the proteome, i.e. the total picture of proteins expressed under certain conditions at certain time points in the cell. Molecular diagnostics aims at identifying for instance misfolded proteins or proteins that carry certain mutations. Students will get knowledge of the technologies involved, for instance Mass Spectrometry and 2D analysis. A computer practice forms part of the course. Students will present a proteomics paper from recent literature. Internship The internship, which has a study load of 15 EC, can be done in the Leiden Bioscience Park, a leading life sciences cluster in Europe. Students can focus on molecular diagnostics in the hospital or specialized institutes or on innovative biotechnology, which is the main focus of companies in the area. The first aim is to introduce students to a laboratory applying molecular diagnostic technology. The second aim is to train students in a number of molecular diagnostic techniques. 6

7 Title of minor: Minor International Business - Global marketing I (7 EC) - International human resources management I (4 EC) - International cultural studies (4 EC) - Global marketing II (7 EC) - International human resources management II (4 EC) - English business writing (4 EC) Content of courses: Global marketing I Strategic issues in international marketing like the value chain, internationalization theories, Porter s Diamond model, the Blue Ocean Strategy, market screening and market expansion theories are the focus of this course. The marketing skills of our students are also used in a project for a client. Students perform a market analysis on a macro level of various countries. An example is a market analysis of the Scandinavian market for a producer of high end boat trailers (Van Claes). International human resources management I International human resources management I focuses on strategic issues in HRM like IHRM strategy, employment laws, labor relations, corporate governance, international recruitment, selection and repatriation. International cultural studies International cultural studies presents the key themes and issues in managing people and organisations across national and cultural boundaries. It offers a selective but broad view of current thinking on culture linked to management, organisation and communication. Global marketing II Global marketing II focuses on more operational issues in international marketing like entry modes, export modes, sourcing, applying the marketing mix on an international level and implementing and coordinating an international global marketing programme. In global marketing II, students work on an assignment on a micro level for an A brand. For Harley Davidson Europe, students have done valuable research into various issues concerning this phenomenal brand. International human resources management II In this course, operational issues of human resources management are topics like global talent management, selection and management of international assignees, training and management development, compensation and benefits, health and safety and crisis management and international HRIS. English business writing The course English business writing focuses on English Language skills on an intermediate level. Topics include the crucial Cs in business writing, significance of sentence structuring, grace of good grammar, sales letters, and report writing. Company visits and guest lectures The program is enriched with guest lectures and company visits. The aim is to build a bridge between theory and practice and to bring students into contact with interesting companies. International week The minor in International Business provides the option to participate in an international week. In the past, international weeks have been organised to Istanbul (Turkey), Sigmaringen (southern Germany), Warsaw (Poland). 7

8 Title of minor: Minor International Health and Development - Pre-preparation - Five week preparation program - Execution of the project - Evaluation and presentation Content of courses: Four days pre-preparation: - Information on the project proposals - Formation of project groups - Information on traveling, insurances, stress handling and medication Online participation is possible during these four days (one day a week) in November/December Five week preparation program (Februari-March) - Intercultural awareness - Socio-economical and political boundaries of healthcare - Planning a project - Hygiene and safety - Multi disciplinary healthcare - Community based rehabilitation - Communication and prevention Execution of the project (March-June) Within weeks you will execute your project in a developing country. Guidance will be given both by local supervisors and an appointed teacher from the University of Applied Sciences Leiden Evaluation and presentation (final week of June) In the last week of the minor you have to present the outcomes of your project orally and reflect on the competencies you ve developed during the minor. The minor will be graded by the results of the project, the evaluation paper and the oral presentation for 30EC. 8

9 Title of minor: Minor International Professional, an experience in Diversity Part 1 Part 2 - Intercultural exchange - 2 ECTS - International Public Law - 4 ECTS - Public Policy- 4 ECTS - Skills (language and management) - 4 ECTS - Project assignment - 1 ECTS - A Visit to both The Hague (Peace Palace International Court of Justice) and Brussels (European Union institutions) - Human Rights and Ethics - 4 ECTS - Sociology from a Global Perspective - 4 ECTS - Skills (language and negotiation) - 4 ECTS - Project assignment - 3 ECTS - Visit to Strasbourg (Coucil of Europe, European Court of Human Rights) Intercultural exchange During this period you will be given a taste of the international work- and study environment in which you will operate during the course of this minor. International public law You will be introduced to key factors in international civil law, sources of international law and the main legislative instruments and enforcement mechanisms. Public policy On the basis of a number of international cases you will get acquainted with the basic concepts in science policy and apply it to current situations in practice. Skills With an intensive program you will gain good spoken and written communication skills in English. You will also learn basic skills management for a multinational setting. Project assignment During the project, you can transfer your knowledge and skills into practice. You will visit The Hague and Brussels. Human Rights and Ethics You examine the major human rights treaties and provisions and will work on case law of the international courts. You will learn basic concepts of ethics in practice with cases. Sociology from a global perspective You examine the major themes in sociology and look at it from an international perspective. The link with important developments in the work field will be explored. Skills (language and negotiation) With an intensive program you will gain good spoken and written communication skills in English. In addition, you will learn basic skills to negotiate in a multinational setting. Project assignment During the project, you can transfer your knowledge and skills into practice. You will visit Strasbourg and some of its international institutions. 9

10 Title of minor: Minor International Public Law and Policy - International Public Law - 5 ECTS - Human Rights - 5 ECTS - Public Policy 5 ECTS International Public Law You will be introduced to key factors in international public law, sources of international law and the main legislative instruments and enforcement mechanisms. We will discuss and apply your knowledge to international cases and conflicts. Human Rights and Ethics You examine the major human rights treaties and provisions and will work on case law of the international courts. Public Policy On the basis of a number of international cases you will get acquainted with the basic concepts in science policy and apply it to current situations in practice. 10
