This course is an introduction to the community/public health nurse s role in health promotion, disease prevention, and health maintenance of individuals, families, groups, and communities. Epidemiological principles of disease prevention and control are addressed. The management of death in the community and hospice/palliative care principles are introduced. During the clinical experience, students participate in short-term community service activities as well as long-term public/voluntary assignments. Formal clinical assignments include a family assessment and a community assessment. N-2014: Health Assessment Across the Lifespan: this is a first course in health assessment which includes obtaining a health history, general survey, performing health screenings, risk identification, and normal physical assessments. Care is taken to incorporate ethnic, cultural, and other diversity-related issues into the study of health assessment throughout the lifecycle. Developmental considerations related to the aging adult are 1
2 integrated into each lesion. This course serves as a foundation for other nursing courses. N-2150, Foundations of Gerontological Nursing (clinical rotation): this beginning level course introduces the students to the basic principles and practices and competencies for care of older adults. The course explores the needs of the older population including health promotion, coping with chronic illness, acute illness, and facing loss and death. It addresses the needs of the elderly across the spectrum of living arrangements with a focus on safety and patient-centered care. Students are taught to utilize the nursing process in the various long-term care settings to plan, implement, and evaluate care that is adapted to meet the individual functional, physical, cognitive, psychological, social, and endurance capabilities of older adults. N-3001 Transitional Concepts for Professional Nursing: This course is designed to assist Registered Nurses (with Associate degrees) and Licensed Vocational Nurses seeking advancement in nursing to begin the transition to professional nursing. The course is required of all advanced placement students prior to beginning the clinical nursing major. It covers issues that shape professional nursing including: historic roots and influences on nursing, challenges to the RN or LVN returning to school, the professional nurse self-image, the use of nursing philosophy and theory in care of the patient with a focus on Dorothea Orem s nursing framework, the evolving health care system in the U.S., accountability of the professional nurse, diversity and professional nursing, review of the nursing process, critical thinking, communication, and teaching in nursing. The second half of the course includes a significant review of patient assessment with advanced professional health assessment and physical exam. N5207 Advanced Pharmacology: This Master s level course is structured to enhance students knowledge and understanding of pharmacology. Focus is on an in-depth understanding of the pharmacologic properties of major drug classes in an organ system approach with emphasis on clinical applications.
