1 Human Sciences International Undergraduate Degree Program Four-year Bachelor of Human Science Program with Two Majors
2 Study Human Sciences in English at Osaka University In October 2011, the School of Human Sciences, Osaka University welcomed the first cohort of students to the newly-created Human Sciences undergraduate degree program taught in English. We are currently recruiting highly motivated and talented students for the fifth cohort to join this exciting program in October This pamphlet is designed to give you essential information regarding our undergraduate Bachelor program in the School of Human Sciences. Pioneering the Human Sciences in Japan: Interdisciplinary Study with an International Focus The School of Human Sciences was established in 1972 in order to create a new science of man that bridges the natural and social sciences. As the first school of its kind in Japan, it has led the field in producing innovative research. The School has undergraduate and graduate programs that offer interdisciplinary courses with the aim of fostering a better understanding of human-beings, and building a more humane and just society. Disciplinary areas of study include sociology, anthropology, philosophy, education, behavioral sciences, and psychology, as well as the fields of development and area studies. We try, however, to investigate human society and human beings from interdisciplinary perspectives. The School is committed to rooting its research and education in both theory and practice and has been at the forefront of Osaka University s internationalization efforts. The Human Sciences International Undergraduate Degree Program The Human Sciences International Undergraduate Degree Program has taken the School s pioneering and international orientation a step further. It cultivates students to be self-motivated and reflective learners; encouraging the development of a sophisticated knowledge base and the necessary practical skills to meet the challenges that they will face in our fast-changing, globalized world. At the same time, students will gain a well-defined area of expertise. The program offers the choice between two majors: Global Citizenship and Contemporary Japan. Both majors include Japanese language education in addition to the main studies component taught in English. The Global Citizenship and Contemporary Japan Majors will be effectively integrated in order to nurture internationally aware individuals who can think and act both locally and globally. The Global Citizenship Major provides a focus on global social, cultural, economic and political issues in addition to how these impact on, and are shaped by, modern Japan. The Contemporary Japan Major provides for a more in-depth understanding of the social, cultural, economic, political and linguistic aspects of Japan from historical and comparative perspectives. In this sense both majors have an explicit focus on globalization and issues relevant to contemporary social sciences. Both majors comprise several key themes including sociology, anthropology, psychology, globalization, peace and conflict, gender studies, disaster studies and globalization of education. Students will graduate from Osaka University with a Bachelor of Human Sciences degree. 3 01 Global Citizenship Major The Global Citizenship Major encourages students to explore what it means to be a global citizen and provides a learning environment where students can acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and mindset for reflecting critically on and engaging positively with global issues. It is particularly aimed at those students who are hoping to work in international agencies including the UN, NGOs, municipal agencies and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) sections of global and Japanese corporations. This major explores the limits and potential of citizenship in a 02 world of massive global migration and huge demographic shifts within nations and communities. Citizenship is a powerful concept that highlights both the rights of the individual and the responsibility to other citizens. Within the context of modernity, this responsibility was limited to fellow countrymen and women (here citizenship was conflated with nationality), but in the 21st century the need to recognize the interdependency of all human beings across national borders is emphasized. Here citizenship entails awareness of our rights and responsibilities in relation to the global community. Contemporary Japan Major The Contemporary Japan Major is an area studies program that takes a multi and inter-disciplinary approach to the study of Japan in a changing world. It offers a broad range of courses that will enable students to gain an in-depth understanding of the social, cultural, economic, political and linguistic aspects of contemporary Japan. The coursework offered in the Contemporary Japan Major invites students to consider the many facets of contemporary Japan and to analyze these characteristics from historical and comparative perspectives. Students will also learn to look at Japanese issues in the context of globalization. The study of Japan is approached from diverse disciplinary perspectives, sociology, anthropology, gender studies, history and law, making use of a knowledge base, methodological tools, and skills drawn not only from the various disciplines that make up the human sciences. Students will be encouraged to draw on and apply the experiential learning they gain from living in Japan. 6 Admissions Policy Careers after Graduation Clubs and Societies Study Abroad Exchange Programs Students Message It is unique and interesting. I like how the relationship between professors and students are really friendly and casual. Students are supported well in their studies as well as in their daily lives. I hope you will be as satisfied as I am. It can be tough sometimes but the classes are really engaged and interesting. Despite what you want to do afterwards, I think G30 will be a good, solid and valuable milestone in your life. Japan is not as bad as you imagine. This program would lead you to an exploration of academic, personal and social self. You would grow in ways you probably cannot imagine right now. I look forward to welcoming you to the rollercoaster ride! This program would encourage you to think in a universal way as a global citizen. I really look forward to welcoming you to the new world of studying. In comparison with other programs, the G30 program may be relatively small and new in its establishment; however, it allows us to create an intimate environment among the school board, teachers, administration staffs and students. In the G30 HUS program, each student s voice is heard and highly valued. 6
