3 U of T s One Programs for arts, science and business students are run on each campus: at U of T Scarborough and U of T Mississauga for students on those campuses, at the U of T St. George colleges for students in the : Innis College, New College, St. Michael s College, Trinity College, University College, Victoria College, and Woodsworth College. These dynamic small-group offerings allow you to network with peers, mentors and professors, and explore a broad range of compelling issues. Select a program that complements your intended academic field or one that lets you explore a totally new area of study. U of T Mississauga utmone utmone is a dynamic program that gives you a chance to explore your academic discipline and makes navigating university life easier by providing you with essential academic tools, such as information literacy and test-taking skills. A senior mentor will guide you and approximately 25 other students from your academic stream through a series of workshops, seminars, and campus events, plus you will participate in community engagement and experiential learning activities to enhance your career development. utmone offers you the flexibility to attend a variety of sessions that best meet your educational goals and will allow you to maximize your academic achievements. Number of credits: This is not a credit program Program structure: Workshops and seminars limited to 30 students, campus events, community work Must be a student registered at UTM entering first year Application procedure: Online application Further Information: U of T Scarborough UTSC One: iexplore UTSC One: iexplore is a suite of innovative courses that offer hands on, experiential educational opportunities, such as small seminars, fieldwork and interpreting everyday life through academic themes. The program provides a wide range of options, such as creating public opinion surveys, conducting geological fieldwork in the remote reaches of southern Ontario, listening to early recorded blues to learn about black life in the segregated South, gaining insight into human-animal interactions at the Toronto Zoo and exploring how poetry and popular culture flow into one another. These classes are run throughout the academic year, but most are clustered in the third trimester so you can participate in UTSC One: iexplore Summer Institute, which includes diverse co- and extra-curricular activities designed to make this an experience that opens your mind to the broad array of academic opportunities. 4 The One Programs offered at each of the seven U of T St. George colleges are open to all students, regardless of college membership. Each One program draws on one or more academic themes related to that college s overall focus and consists of one or more courses for degree credit. All the One programs include a variety of co-curricular activities, some related to the academic themes of the program, others assisting with your transition to university study. All Arts & Science One programs work to create a community of learners so students and instructors will get to know one another well. U of T St. George, Innis One: The Creative City Drawing from the College s three academic programs Cinema Studies, Urban Studies, and Writing and Rhetoric Innis One encourages you to develop your creative and critical capacities by exploring the dynamism of the urban environment. By reaching beyond the walls of the academy to engage in an imaginative, inquiry-based, and civic-minded learning experience, you will gain a greater appreciation of the interplay between film, writing and urban landscapes. Small seminars featuring guest lecturers, student leadership events, and special field trips will offer you a unique experiential learning opportunity. Drawing on the social advocacy focus of New College s academic programs, New One reaches across different disciplines, across sciences and arts, across campus and community organizations, across local and global contexts. Exploring creative ways of learning in a small seminar, students will address themes such as science and social justice, sustainable food systems, diasporas and identity, art and social advocacy. Co-curricular activities such as public lectures and field trips will broaden students experience. Engaged students, professors, and members of community organizations will think together about ways to build bridges between people, communities, and ideas. 5 U of T St. George, SMC One: Cornerstone Trinity One UC One: Engaging Toronto Vic One If you are interested in social justice, SMC One: Cornerstone allows you to integrate your university experience with work in the local community. The Justice, Culture and Community course will help you explore the theory, development and application of social justice from historical, sociological, political, philosophical, theological and psychological perspectives. You will work with your classmates to implement service-learning projects in one of four different areas: Life and Health, Environment and the Earth, Politics and Society, or Thought and Culture. Whether you are serving in a homeless shelter or long-term care facility, doing advocacy work for a local NGO or working in community economic development, SMC One will allow you to reflect on major questions of truth and value in the context of both academic study and lived experience with a community partner. Program structure: 25 students in each theme-based seminar group; 2 hours of lectures and seminars and an average of 3 hours of community service each week Application procedure: Online application with brief personal statement and service experience Further Information: The Margaret MacMillan Trinity One program explores world affairs and human life through its International Relations and Ethics streams, each of which consists of two seminar courses and one co-requisite course. The International Relations seminars examine the history, ideas, ideologies, and institutions of the international system over the last 400 years and consider the ways in which states today grapple with ongoing challenges to global order and prosperity. The Ethics seminars wrestle with enduring questions of love and duty, family and self, and private vice and public virtue in the world of contemporary politics and in works of the creative imagination. The Trinity One seminars develop students skills of critical analysis and their ability to make persuasive arguments both verbally and on paper. Regular visits by guest speakers illuminate the ways in which the ideas that students discuss in the classroom apply in the world beyond the university and offer opportunities to engage in informal conversation with leading figures from the fields of politics, media, and the arts. Other co-curricular activities include excursions to cultural events in Toronto. Number of credits: 2 credits + 1 co-requisite credit = 3 credits total Program structure: Streams are separate; each comprises 2 seminar courses of 25 students. The IR stream co-requisite choices are History, Political Science, Economics, or Sociology. The Ethics stream choices are Philosophy, English, or Political Science University College s UC One enables you to take one of an exciting set of small-enrolment interdisciplinary courses that engage different aspects of Toronto: its communities and their place in Canada, the health of its citizens, its performing arts scene, and the culture and politics of its urban sexual diversity. UC One combines a strong academic orientation with co-curricular components that use Toronto as a laboratory for both humanities and social scientific enquiry. This program not only prepares you to succeed at U of T, but also teaches you to apply what you learn to the world around you. Program structure: Seminars of 25 students, community-based research Application procedure: Personal statement Further Information: First launched in 2003, Vic One is an academically challenging and rigorous program for talented and engaged students who are interested in a multi-disciplinary approach to examining major historical and cultural figures and ideas that have shaped human experience. Offered through five academic streams, Vic One aims to stimulate, encourage and refine intellectual curiosity. Students work directly with instructors in a seminar setting, honing research, presentation, writing, creative and critical thinking skills. Research opportunities, field participation and a weekly series of guest lectures by noted scholars, thinkers, artists and industry leaders round out the Vic One experience. 6 Do I have to apply to a One program? No. Applying to One programs is completely voluntary. Can any first-year student apply to any of the One programs? No. Only students who have applied for admission to U of T St. George can apply to the programs run through the colleges, only students registered at U of T Mississauga can apply to utmone and only students registered at U of T Scarborough can apply to UTSC One: iexplore. At U of T St. George, do I have to apply to the college that offers the One program I wish to take? All the college One programs are open to Arts & Science students from any college. Will the One program I take count toward my degree? Yes, with the exception of utmone which is not a credit program. For the U of T St. George college One programs you will receive one or more credits that count toward your degree when you complete your One program. Each UTSC One: iexplore course gives you 0.5 credit towards your degree. Can I apply to more than one of the programs? Yes, but only in academic divisions to which you have applied. You must fill out a separate application for each program you are interested in. How will students be selected? Each One application process is slightly different. Some require a personal statement or essay and many ask you to fill out an online application form. Your high school grades may also be taken into account. Consult each set of application instructions for details on how to apply to the programs you are interested in. Once I ve completed a One program, do I have to continue studying in that field? Some Ones lead toward later programs of study and others do not, but participating in a One does not limit your program choices. When will I get a response to my One program application? Arts and Science students who apply for a One program before the initial posted deadline will be informed of the decision before the deadline to respond to your offer of admission. U of T St. George, Woodsworth One: Order & Disorder The first thing we do, let s kill all the lawyers, says Dick in Shakespeare s Henry VI. Dick may be a fool, but he expresses a frustration felt by many. Society requires law and order, but at what point does order become oppression? How do we balance our need for freedom and society s need for order? In Woodsworth One: Order and Disorder, you ll explore these and related questions through interdisciplinary seminars introducing perspectives from criminology, sociology, political science, philosophy, and history. In addition to the seminars, the program includes a wide range of community-building activities, guest lectures, student leadership events, and special field trips. As much as possible you will be enrolled in special Woodsworth One tutorial sections in your other Arts & Science courses, unifying your entire first-year experience. Sophisticated class discussions, personal attention from dedicated professors, interaction with an engaged and dynamic student community and exposure to diverse and exciting plenary lectures.
