1 Installing and Updating SE422 Access Control Units Firmware! Read all procedures before attempting the field replacement of the EPROM firmware in any equipment. Components are static sensitive and care must be taken when working on or near this equipment. Leave EPROMS in their protective packages until you are ready to install them. Before removing the EPROMS from the package or equipment, use a wrist strap with a clip lead tied to a confirmed earth ground to discharge any static electricity that may have accumulated on your clothing. Handle EPROMS by their edges only, do not touch the connector pins or set the EPROMS on a metal surface. Failure to follow the supplied instructions or information may result in loss of data or damage to hardware and will void the warranty. MINIMUM TOOL REQUIREMENT FOR EPROM UPGRADE IBM PC Compatible, DOS 6.0 or greater, port (Laptop PC or HOST i.e. NexSentry Manager, SE5850, SE6000) Westinghouse TERMINAL.EXE program (DOS Based) Communication interface cable (or existing host connection) Adjustable Wrench Anti Static discharge wrist strap with ground lead (Radio Shack P/N ) IC chip extractor (Radio Shack P/N ) SE422 Series Installation and Operation Manual Anti Static foam mat (optional)(radio Shack P/N ) Upgrading the EPROM in the SE422 Access Control Unit is a simple task with a minimal risk to the loss of data if the instructions and safety procedures are followed carefully. Westinghouse Security Electronics (WSE) strongly recommends the use of the WSE TERMINAL.EXE program for logging into and saving data from the ACUs. This program is bundled with SE5850 version 3.0 or better and can be copied to a single disk for use on other machines. It is located in the c:\5850\bin directory and it is called TERMINAL.EXE. If you do not have a copy of this program, you may download a copy from our web site or by calling Technical Support and requesting a copy to be ed. The WSE Technical Support telephone number is On standalone Access Control Units, WSE recommends that a paper printout of the entire database be made in the event that data is lost or becomes corrupted during the update process and can not be recovered. This printout can serve a dual purpose;) in the aid of re-entering of data and, 2) as a hard copy of the customers database for future service call needs. On host systems, it is recommended that before this operation begins, that the service technician notes for each panel, the Access Control Unit s password, address and baud rate for each panel. The technician should be familiar with the procedures and commands for issuing system and key downloads for the customer s host system. The technician should also advise those customers that are using the 20mA communication format, that communication with other units on the loop will be interrupted during this procedure. Page

2 ! WARNING! When upgrading the EPROM in the SE422, the ACU s database between EPROM revisions maybe INCOMPATABLE! If the ACU is NOT connected to a HOST computer, it is important to make a backup of the database using the X-Save command as well as a printed copy. When Upgrading from revision L to M in a standalone unit, you must convert the X SAVED database using a conversion utility program. This utility program is available from the WSE web site in the Technical Resources Download Center. When upgrading from any revision prior to L, this conversion utility is not required. I. WSE TERMINAL.EXE Program The SE422 Series Controller supports the capability of backing-up databases and restoring these backed-up databases to a storage disk of your computer by using the WSE terminal emulation program, TERMINAL.EXE version 2.0. If your computer does not have a copy of the WSE TERMINAL.EXE program, you can make a copy this program from any SE5850 version 3.0 or better system. It is located in the c:\5850\bin directory and it called TERMINAL.EXE. If you do not have a copy of this program, you may download a copy from our web site or by calling Technical Support and requesting a copy to be ed. The WSE Technical Support telephone number is To execute the Westinghouse Security Electronics TERMINAL.EXE program, from the C:\> prompt, enter the command TERMINAL <Enter>. The TERMINAL.EXE program starts with the default settings of COM2, 9600, 0 (odd parity), 7 (data bits), and (stop bits). This information is displayed in the lower left corner of the TERMINAL.EXE screen. If your computer does not have COM2 or you wish to use COM, use the arrow keys to select Change current COM parameters, otherwise select Accept current COM parameters. For other terminal commands, press <F> for help or <Alt-M> for the menu. Once you have the SE422 Series Controller connected to the proper computer communication port and have defined the correct communications settings, press <Enter>. The SE422 will provide a prompt of YOUR PASSWORD. Type in your password, press <Enter> and the SE422 will respond with YOUR COMMAND. Then perform the desired action described below. II. Backing-Up the SE422 Database To back-up the SE422 data, make sure that you have sufficient room on the computer hard disk or on the floppy diskette (back-up data takes approximately 70,000 bytes).. Enter the command XSAVE and press <Enter>. 2. Press <Alt-M> to access the menu and select RECEIVE A FILE and press <Enter>. 3. Select XMODEM CHECKSUM and press <Enter>. 4. Enter the destination directory and file name with extension. Example (root directory) - c: ACU422 Example (sub-directory) - c:\save\acu When the back-up is finished, you must cycle power to the SE422 to reestablish communication. Page 2

3 U REV L WSE III. Accessing the EPROM. Turn off and unplug the power to ACU s power supply. 2. Wearing a static dissipative wrist strap, ground the wrist strap to a known earth ground. 3. Open the door to the ACU and locate the EPROM on the motherboard in socket U3 IV. Removal of the EPROM. Verify that your wrist strap is properly grounded. 2. Using the IC chip extractor, gently pull the EPROM from its sockets. Take note of the EPROM orientation. 3. Remove the new EPROM from the static dissipative package and place the removed EPROM in the package for storage. 9 SE422 FIRMWARE U3 9 V. Installation of the EPROM. Locate the notch in the end of the EPROM. This notch identifies its orientation in the socket. 2. Carefully insert the new EPROM into its socket with the notches lined up. If the EPROM pins do not line up with the socket, gently bend the pins against a non-conductive surface until the correct alignment is achieved. 3. With the EPROM installed, verify that there are no bent or mis-aligned pins.! IF THE EPROM IS INSTALLED INCORECTLY, BOTH THE EPROM AND ACU COULD BE DAMAGED Page 3

4 VI Power up & Verification (Refer to the SE422 Manual for power up procedure) Connect the computer to the terminal port, using your interface cable and execute the TERMINAL.EXE program. Verify the appropriate communication parameters. Plug in the ACU s power supply and turn the power switch on. Verify the Vital LED is flashing and that the terminal should displays the date, time and reset messages. If the Vital LED is not flashing (on steady or off completely) immediately turn off the power supply for the ACU. Check all power connections and cable connections. If the connections look normal, the EPROM may be installed incorrectly. If the EPROM is suspected to be the problem, go back to the beginning, section III. Disassembly of the Access Control Unit If the Vital LED is flashing, check your computer s connections and communication parameters. The default setting for an ACU is 300 baud, 7 bit word length, Odd parity, Stop bit (300,7-O-). 4. With the computer connected, log into the ACU. VII HOST connected ACU.. If the ACU is used with a HOST computer, verify the correct address and baud rate for the host connection under the SYSTEM command menu. 2. If the address and host baud rate are correct, go to step 3. If the host address and/or baud rate are different, enter the correct values. At the command prompt, type RESET and press <Enter>. 3. You may now disconnect the computer from the ACU and quit the TERMINAL.EXE program. 4. When the unit establishes communications with the HOST system, download both the system and keyholder data to the ACU. If a database discrepancy message occurs you will have to erase the memory at the ACU. To erase the memory, log into the ACU and at the command prompt type ERASEMEMORY. Wait approximately one minute, then cycle power to the ACU and go back to VIII. Power up & Verification, Step #4. 5. Test and verify the operation of the Access Control Unit. VIII STANDALONE Operation No HOST. Compare all programming with a printed copy of the database. If the programming is missing or is corrupted, you will need to restore the database from the data backup performed at the beginning. (See Section IX Restoring SE422 Data) 2. If the programming is correct, verify the operation of the ACU (Refer to Operation Test in the SE422 Series Installation and Operation Manual) Page 4

5 IX Restoring SE422 Data To restore an SE422 s previously backed-up data, make sure that the file is available on the computer.. Enter the command XLOAD and press <Enter>. 2. Press <Alt-M> to access the menu and select SEND A FILE and press <Enter>. 3. Enter the source directory and file name with extension. 4. Example (root directory) - c: ACU Example (sub-directory) - c:\save\ ACU When the process is finished, the SE422 should reset itself, and the SE422 will be on line and operational.
