Prerequisites: Prospectus: Please Read It is your responsibility to know everything herein For Music 652: Music 651 or equivalent, with a satisfactory grade or better. For Music 653: Music 652 or equivalent, with a satisfactory grade or better. For Music 654: Music 653 or equivalent, with a satisfactory grade or better. Goals and Objectives: Music 652 is for intermediate level students who want to progress further into more complex and technically demanding compositions. Greater playing skill is achieved through performance and evaluation of numerous exercises and solos. This course functions as the next step after Music 651, and serves as a prerequisite for successive guitar courses, including Music 653 and 654. Music 653 is for intermediate level students who wish to progress further into more complex and technically demanding compositions. Greater playing skill is achieved through performance and evaluation of numerous exercises and solos. This course functions as the next step after Music 652, and serves as a prerequisite for Music 654. Music 654 is for advanced level students who wish to progress further into more complex and technically demanding compositions. Greater playing skill is achieved through performance and evaluation of numerous exercises and solos. This course functions as the next step after Music 653.

2 Required Materials: Guitar. You will need either a nylon-string classical guitar. Steel-string acoustic guitars and electric guitars are not suitable for this course. Make sure you have a fresh set of strings on your guitar, and keep one or two extra sets in reserve. Normal tension (for nylon strings) are recommended. Footstool: This is necessary for playing the instrument on the left knee, which is the best and most comfortable position. Can be purchased at your local music store. Folding music stand. This is highly recommended for your practice at home. Can be purchased at your local music store. Electronic tuner, tuning fork or pitch pipes. You really must have one of these to effectively tune your guitar. An electronic tuner is the pricier choice, while the other two are just a few dollars. Can be purchased at your local music store. Metronome. A very useful tool to help you keep good rhythm. Nowadays very inexpensive and can be purchased at your local music store. GUITARS AND ALL ACCESSORIES ARE AVAILABLE AT GUITAR CENTER IN HOLLYWOOD: 7425 W. Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, CA (323) Additional Required Materials: 3-ring notebook with 3-hole lined notebook paper 3-hole music staff paper (not spiral bound) - preferably with wide spacing of lines. Can be printed from musictheory.net if you wish (free!). Sharp pencils (some pens as well) and a good eraser. Folder in which to keep your homework assignments, quizzes, exams, etc. Basic computer and internet skills, as well as computer access are also required in order to complete assignments on MusicTheory.net. Optional Materials: A good paperback music dictionary. These are readily available at larger bookstores and music stores. Nail file or nail board and sandpaper, if you play the guitar with the fingernails of the right hand. Required Text: Solo Guitar Playing, Book 1 by Frederick Noad (published by Schirmer Books). This is the main text we will be using for the course. Make sure you purchase your copy at the LACC Bookstore, or from another source, as soon as possible.

3 Other Required Texts: Diatonic Major and Minor Scales by Andrés Segovia (published by Columbia Music Company). Pumping Nylon by Scott Tennant (published by Alfred Publishing Company) The Complete Carcassi Guitar Method edited by Mel Bay and Joseph Castle. (published by Mel Bay Publications). The above are supplements to the main text. They are an important part of all classical guitarists library, and you will be using selections from them in this course and in the courses to follow. They are widely available. Course Expectations: 1. You are expected to participate fully in all classroom activities, and to enjoy the process of developing musical skills and knowledge. 2. You are expected to spend at least one hour per day in reading, studying, engaging in online activities and guitar practice. It is therefore of utmost importance that you budget time in your schedule to fulfill this purpose. 3. You are expected to do the assigned reading and exercises in the textbook in full and on time. This is necessary to you to progress in this class and enjoy it to the fullest. 4. You are expected to complete the homework as described below. Homework: 1) You are required to practice (I prefer the word rehearse ) at least one hour each day. This is necessary to you to progress in this class and enjoy it to the fullest. About forty minutes should be spent on new material, and about twenty minutes should be devoted to review of previous material. Outside material is encouraged, but not at the expense of the rehearsal of class assignments. 2) You are required to complete the Note Identification Exercise once on MusicTheory.net. For this submission you must get 100 correct, print out, put your name on the sheet and turn it in. See handout for full details. 3) You are required to complete the Fretboard Identification four times, in four formats, on MusicTheory.net: For Music 652: in the first assignment you will have the frets set to 4; in the second assignment you will have the frets set to 7; in the third assignment you will have the frets set to 9; in the fourth assignment you will have the frets set to 12. For each trainer submission you must get 25 correct, print out, put your name on the sheet and turn it in. See handout for full details. For Music 653: in the first assignment you will have the frets set to 5; in the second assignment you will have the frets set to 7; in the third assignment you will have the frets set to 9; in the fourth assignment you will have the frets set to 12. 4 For Music 654: in the first assignment you will have the frets set to 6; in the second assignment you will have the frets set to 8; in the third assignment you will have the frets set to 10; in the fourth assignment you will have the frets set to 12. For each trainer submission you must get 25 correct, print out, put your name on the sheet and turn it in. See handout for full details. 4) You are required to attend one concert during the semester. This concert must be a classical guitar concert. After attending the performance, you are required to to write a brief report, with either the ticket stub or program (or both) stapled to it, by its due date. All reports are to be typed or computer printed, and two pages minimum. Papers missing the ticket stub or program will not be accepted. Please see concert report handouts for complete details. Attendance of concerts at LACC is warmly welcomed. Practice Rooms: You are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the practice rooms. They are located in the east end of the hallway. To use the rooms you no longer need to enroll in a music practice lab course you only need to be enrolled in a music class and have a cub card. Inquire at the Music Office for further details. Bear in mind that practice rooms are limited. Practice room hours are the same as those of the Music Office: M-W 9:00am- 9:00pm, Th 9:00am 7:00pm, and F 9:00am 4:00pm. Class Participation: CLASS PARTICIPATION IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT IN THIS COURSE. Please see Class Participation policy for details. The policy is strict simply because is impossible to succeed in the course without a genuine commitment. Exams: There will be two: a midterm and a final. Both the midterm and final will contain a written portion on scantron, plus a private jury performance of c. 5 minutes in length. Make sure to bring a scantron form (#882-E, rectangular) to each written exam. All information will be given to you very clearly ahead of time. All you have to do is learn and remember it! A make-up exam will only be given to a student under the following circumstances: 1) With prior permission from the instructor. 2) Presentation of a legitimate doctor s note, on his/her letterhead. In-Class Performances: In the week between the written midterm and performance midterm, and in the week between the written final and the performance final, students will perform the playing portion of their exams for their peers. These pre-performances will be not be graded, but are important for several reasons: they allow students to share their hard work with their classmates, test-run their pieces in a supportive and nurturing environment, benefit from constructive peer feedback, and gain valuable performing experience.

5 Extra Credit: There are two ways to earn extra credit: 1) You may attend an additional classical guitar concert and submit a paper as described above. 2) Maintain a perfect attendance record (it must be perfect - no absences and no tardies). Course Grading: All grading is done on a points basis, as follows: Note Identification Exercise: 100 points Four Fretboard Identification Exercises: 25 points each for a total of 100 points Concert Report: 100 points Midterm Exam: 200 points (written 100 points, performance 100 points) Final Exam: 200 points (written 100 points, performance 100 points) Grand total of 700 possible points Extra Credit Concert Report: 50 points. Perfect Attendance: 25 extra points. Attendance: can affect final grade. Please see attendance policy for details. Attitude and deportment: can and will affect final grade. Not paying attention, excessive talking, unwillingness to participate, etc. fall into this category. The grading scale for the final grade is as follows: A 90% - 100% points B 80% - 89% points C 70% - 79% points D 60% - 69% points F 0% - 59% points Note that Los Angeles City College does not use plus/minus system of grading. You may feel free to check your points total with me at any time during the semester. Exit Skills: Music 652: The ability to play solo and ensemble literature of advanced beginner to intermediate levels. Poise and confidence as a performer. Mastery of basic stage etiquette. The ability to read music fluently up to and including the fifth position (frets 1-8). The ability to play major, minor and chromatic scales. The ability to play simple slurs in all fingering combinations across the strings. A working knowledge of tempo markings, dynamics and expressive terms. A knowledge of advanced beginner and intermediate level guitar technique and literature. Demonstrate the ability to write a critical review of a classical guitar concert, observing grammatical, compositional and journalistic standards. The expertise to continue guitar studies in successive levels of guitar courses.

6 Music 653 and 654 Additional Exit Skills: Demonstrate the ability to analyze and perform compositions of an advanced level. Demonstrate the ability to utilize the entire fingerboard in relation to individual decisions regarding positional playing. Illustrate the ability to apply the principles of accents, pausing, and other aspects of advanced interpretation. Illustrate the ability to formulate solutions to technical obstacles common in chord and scale passages found in advanced solo and ensemble compositions. Demonstrate the ability to compare and analyze optional technical and interpretive possibilities. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs): Correctly perform the selected Classical Guitar II, III and IV studies with proper rhythm, tempo and technique. Disabilities: Students with a verified disability who may need authorized accommodation(s) for this class are encouraged to notify the instructor and contact the Office of Special Services [SSV 100: (323) x2270] as soon as possible, and at least two weeks before any exam or quiz. All information will remain confidential. Cell Phone Policy Students may not use their cell phones to accept or make calls, or text, while in class. If cell phones are brought to class, they must be turned off, or put to 'silent' or vibration mode. Students who do not adhere to this policy will be asked to leave the class. If it happens a second time, the student will be referred to the Vice President of Student Services. Drop Date The deadline to drop without a W is the last day of Week 2 (of the semester), which is Sunday, September 8th for Fall If you must drop a course, drop before the specified deadline for dropping a class without a grade of "W." Dropping after Week 2 will result in a W on your transcript. Effective since July 1, 2012 students now have just 3 attempts to pass a class. If a student gets a "W" or grade of "D", "F", I, or "NP" in a class, that will count as an attempt. A student s past record of course attempts district wide will also be considered. Therefore, before the end of Week 2 you should carefully consider if you can reasonably manage this course with the other factors in your life (e.g. work, family, course load). If you think you will not be able to complete this course with a C or better, drop by Sunnday, September 8th. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to talk to me. 7 Important Rules and Fair Warnings: There is absolutely no eating, drinking or gum chewing in class. This is a Music Department regulation. Doing so will negatively affect your final grade through potential loss of points. If you have some food or drink with you, you can leave it on the table just inside the door to the room. Bottled water, however, is OK. I promise to treat you fairly and with respect, and I ask that you do the same for me and for your fellow classmates. Absolutely no conversing or noodling on the instrument when I am talking. Doing so will also negatively, and severely, affect your final grade. I expect your full and undivided attention when class is in session. You are free to socialize before or after class, not during. No negotiations on grades. I am very happy to discuss with you anything relating to the class and my grading standards, but I do not permit students to negotiate grades with me. Please do not be late coming back from breaks. The Policy on Academic Honesty, as described in the LACC College catalog, is strictly observed. Cheating and plagiarism are serious academic offenses. A grade of F will be given on any exam or assignment where cheating is suspected. Repeated offenses will result in my recommendation that a student be dropped from the course. All cheating and/or plagiarizing will be reported to the appropriate office. Aside from all that, cheating throws your yin and yang out of balance - you don t want to disturb your cosmic harmony, do you?! 8 Music 652-4: Classical Guitar II, III and IV Los Angeles City College Wednesdays, 6:50-10:00PM, DH 309 Instructor: Dr. Gregory Newton Class Participation Policy: Please Read CLASS PARTICIPATION IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT IN THIS COURSE. The policy is strict simply because is impossible to complete the course without regular participation. Class participation is necessarily and strongly tied to your being present in class. Obviously, you cannot participate in class if you are not there to do so; similarly, if you are present you are necessarily participating. For purposes of this course, the following definitions will be observed: Presence = Attendance Class-length participation (CLP) = Presence in class for the full class period Class-length non-participation (CLNP) = Absence Partial-length non-participation (PLNP) = Late arrival to class or leaving early Class lectures will include discussions and interactive learning components that require student involvement. You are expected to be present and participating in ALL class meetings, and arriving on time. We only meet once per week. Please, save your CLNPs for emergencies! The following policy regarding class participation is based upon the District policy. It is your responsibility to read, know and follow this policy. CLNP CLP will be taken at the beginning of each class period. If you arrive late, it is YOUR responsibility to notify me of your late arrival at the break or at the end of the class period. Failure to do this will result in receiving a CLNP instead of a PLNP for the class meeting. You are allowed two CLNPs during the semester, for whatever reason. Upon a third CLNP your final point total will be lowered by 50 points which can, and likely will, affect your final grade. For example, if your final point total is 650 (an A ) it will drop to 600 ( a B ). Successive CLNPs will continue to lower your point total, and thus your final grade, by the same method. Beyond the allowed two CLNPs, a CLNP due to illness will only be excused with a legitimate signed doctor s note on his/her letterhead. Excused CLNPs do not include picking up someone at the airport, non-emergency medical appointments, birthday parties, etc. PLNP A PLNP is defined as 1) being more than five minutes late, or 2) leaving class early, according to the classroom clock. A PLNP is equal to one-half of a CLNP. Therefore, for example, without any CLNPs you are allowed four PLNPs during the semester, for whatever reason. Upon a fifth PLNP your final point total will be lowered by 25 points.

9 CLNPs and PLNPs accumulate in a combined fashion, not separately. It is your responsibility to keep track of your own record in order to avoid penalties. Adds and Drops The policies on adding and dropping as stated in the Schedule of Classes are strictly observed. It is your responsibility to know these regulations as well as the entire informational section in the front of the Schedule of Classes. Read it! Thoroughly! Our Credo* The study of music demands, as do all the arts, not only natural ability and talents, but also more importantly dedication, sacrifice, self-discipline, inquisitiveness, and the unrelenting desire to achieve excellence. Success requires all of these attributes. Natural ability is not a substitute for any other component. In fact, natural ability often unfairly enjoys the credit earned by hard work and dedication.
