1 Preparing to Install SQL Server 2005 Depending on your requirements, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup installs a new instance of SQL Server. The following topics address important considerations for the computer where SQL Server 2005 will be installed. Before you install SQL Server 2005, review the following information. All SQL Server 2005 Installations Be sure the computer meets the system requirements for SQL Server Setup includes a preinstallation check that identifies unsupported configurations on installation computers and guides users to remedy blocking issues. Make sure you have administrator permissions on the computer where SQL Server will be installed. Do not install SQL Server 2005 on a domain controller. Back up your current installation of SQL Server if you are running an instance of SQL Server on the computer where SQL Server 2005 is to be installed. Verify that the disk where SQL Server will be installed is uncompressed. If you attempt to install SQL Server to a compressed drive, Setup will fail. Exit antivirus software while installing SQL Server. Stop all services that depend on SQL Server, including any service using Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), such as Internet Information Services (IIS). Exit Event Viewer and registry editors (Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe). Review all SQL Server installation options, and prepare to make the appropriate selections when running Setup.

2 How to: Install SQL Server 2005 (Setup) The Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Installation Wizard is Windows Installer-based, and provides a single feature tree for installation of all SQL Server 2005 components: Database Engine Management Tools Connectivity Components Prerequisites Before you install SQL Server 2005, review topics in Preparing to Install SQL Server Note: For local installations, you must run Setup as an administrator. To install SQL Server To begin the installation process, insert the SQL Server 2005 DVD into your DVD drive. If the autorun feature on your DVD drive does not launch the installation program, navigate to the root of the DVD and launch splash.hta. If installing from a network share, navigate to the network folder and launch splash.hta. 2. From the autorun dialog, click Run the SQL Server Installation Wizard. 3. On the End User License Agreement page, read the license agreement, and then select the check box to accept the licensing terms and conditions. Accepting the license agreement activates the Next button. To continue, click Next. To end Setup, click Cancel. 4. On the SQL Server Component Update page, Setup installs software required for SQL Server For more information about component requirements, click the Help button at the bottom of the page. To begin the component update process, click Install. To continue after the update completes, click Finish. 5. On the Welcome page of the SQL Server Installation Wizard, click Next to continue. 6. On the System Configuration Check (SCC) page, the installation computer is scanned for conditions that may block Setup. To interrupt the scan, click Stop. To display a list of check items grouped by result, click the Filter button and then select a category from the drop-down list. To view a report of SCC results, click the Report button and then select an option from the drop-down list. Options include viewing the report, saving the report to a file, copying the report to the Clipboard, and sending the report as . To proceed with Setup after the SCC scan completes, click Continue. 7. On the Registration Information page, enter information in the Name and Company text boxes. To continue, click Next.

3 8. On the Components to Install page, select the components for your installation. A description for each component group appears in the Components to be Installed pane when you select it. You can select any combination of check boxes. 9. To install individual components, click Advanced. Otherwise, click Next to continue. 10. If you clicked Advanced on the previous page, the Feature Selection page is displayed. On the Feature Selection page, select the program features to install using the dropdown boxes. To install components to a custom directory, select the feature and then click Browse. For more information about the functionality of this page, click Help. To continue when your feature selections are complete, click Next. 11. On the Instance Name page, select a default instance for your installation. To install a new default instance, there must not be a default instance on the computer. 12. On the Service Account page, select Built in Account (Local System) for SQL Server service accounts. You can use one account for all of the services. To proceed, click Next. 13. On the Authentication Mode page, choose the authentication mode to use for your SQL Server installation. Select Mixed mode Authentication. Enter and confirm the system administrator (sa) login. Passwords are the first line of defense against intruders, so setting strong passwords is essential to the security of your system. Never set a blank or weak sa password. To proceed, click Next. Note: For this release, SQL Server Setup may not enforce the strong password requirement on some default configurations of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 where the computer is not a member of a domain. On the Collation Settings page, specify the collation for your SQL Server instance. To proceed, click Next. 14. Reporting Services use the radio buttons to select whether to configure the report server with default values. To view installation details for this page, click the Details button. For more information, click Help at the bottom of the page. To proceed, click Next. 15. On the Error Reporting page, optionally clear the check box to disable error reporting. For more information about error reporting functionality, click Help at the bottom of the page. To proceed, click Next.

4 16. On the Ready to Install page, review the summary of features and components for your SQL Server installation. To proceed, click Install. 17. On the Installation Progress page, you can monitor installation progress as Setup proceeds. To view the log file for a component during installation, click the product or status name on the Installation Progress page. 18. On the Completing the Microsoft SQL Server Installation Wizard page, you can view the Setup summary log by clicking the link provided on this page. To exit the SQL Server Installation Wizard, click Finish. 19. If you are instructed to restart the computer, do so now. It is important to read the message from the Setup program when you are done with installation. Failure to restart the computer may cause failures when you run the Setup program in the future. Next Steps After Setup completes the installation of SQL Server 2005, you can verify that the installation was successful. After Setup completes the installation of SQL Server 2005, you can further configure SQL Server using graphical tool SQL Server Configuration Manager. Make sure the MSSQLSERVER and SQL BROWSER Services are running as shown in the above figure.

6 How to: Set an Instance of SQL Server to Start Automatically (SQL Server Configuration Manager) During setup, Microsoft SQL Server is normally configured to start automatically. If this was not done, you can change that setting at any time. To set an instance of SQL Server to start automatically 1. On the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Configuration Manager. 2. In SQL Server Configuration Manager, expand Services, and then click SQL Server. 3. In the details pane, right-click the name of the instance you want to start automatically, and then click Properties. 4. In the SQL Server <instancename> Properties dialog box, set Start Mode to Automatic. 5. Click OK, and then close SQL Server Configuration Manager

The different editions of SQL Server 2005 accommodate the unique performance, runtime, and price requirements of organizations and individuals. Which of the various SQL Server 2005 components you install will also depend on your organization or individual needs. SQL Server Evaluation Edition supports the same feature set as SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. You can upgrade SQL Server Evaluation Edition for production use. SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (32-bit and 64-bit) SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition is the data management and analysis platform for small- and medium-sized organizations. It includes the essential functionality needed for e-commerce, data warehousing, and line-of-business solutions. Standard Edition s integrated business intelligence and high availability features provide organizations with the essential capabilities needed to support their operations. SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition is ideal for the small- to medium-sized organization that needs a complete data management and analysis platform.

8 SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition (32-bit only) SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition is the data management solution for small organizations that need a database with no limits on size or number of users. SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition can serve as a front-end Web server, or for departmental or branch office operations. It includes the core database features of the SQL Server product line, and is easily upgradeable to SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition or SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition is an ideal entry-level database that is reliable, robust, and easy-to-manage.
