The streets are lined with half-timbered 16th and 17th c. houses with vast internal courtyards and equally vast, steeply sloping roofs with open lofts where the skins used to be dried. Empress Josephine loved walking there when she stayed in the pavilion named after her. With the boats on the lake, the little zoo, the storks and the children's games, the park is a very popular place with the locals. THE COVERED BRIDGES They have kept their name although the roofs disappeared in the 18th century. They are overlooked by four 14th century towers, remains of the old city walls.
