4 Community Resolution to Power Indy Forward WHEREAS, how Indianapolis Power & Light generates its electricity will have long-term impacts on the City of Indianapolis health, economic development and sustainability; and WHEREAS, public, private and faith leaders in Indianapolis have been working together to improve education, mass transit, economic development and environmental sustainability with the goal of making Indianapolis the best place to live, work and do business; and WHEREAS, Indianapolis Power & Light is preparing a 20-year energy plan that must be submitted to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission by November 1, 2014; and WHEREAS, in 2012, and Indiana University public opinion poll found 80 percent of Hoosiers favor increased use of wind and solar energy; and WHEREAS, research indicates that poor air quality linked to burning coal causes asthma attacks, heart attacks and premature death, affecting the lives of children and adults in Indianapolis every day; and WHEREAS, a public-private partnership is working to improve Indianapolis waterways and reconnect them to people and neighborhoods, yet those same waterways are affected by pollution from coal-fired power plants and contain fish contaminated with mercury linked to burning coal; and WHEREAS, other utilities in the Midwest are leading the way in developing a renewable energy economy, including Iowa-based MidAmerican Energy, which by the end of 2015 will get 39 percent of its electric generation resources from wind power; and WHEREAS a report released in 2013 by the Solar Foundation showed Indiana is falling behind Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky in solar jobs per capita; and WHEREAS, increasingly affordable clean energy is out-competing coal and reducing electricity bills in states like Iowa, Montana, Colorado and Georgia; and WHEREAS, Indianapolis residents want improved options for generating their own electricity and want Indianapolis to improve its energy efficiency ranking from 29 th of 34 cities ranked by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy. Therefore, be it now resolved that: 1. The Episcopal Church of All Saints supports a clean, renewable energy vision for powering Marion County. 2.
