According to the STFC Policies and Procedures, Annual Allocation requests are related and designed to improve existing technologies and acquire new technologies to be used by the students of UW Tacoma. The Annual Allocation process is the "primary process for recommendating the distribution of Student Technology Fees for the ensuing fiscal year." STFC Complete Policies and Procedures can be found here. If applicable, how is the current technology disabled or inadequate? 2. Benefit to Students: Discuss how students have benefited from the original proposal, if applicable. How will additional funding of the technology benefit students? If this was an unforeseen technology need, discuss how students will benefit from this new proposal and why the need cannot wait for annual allocation funding. 3. 3 2012 Student Technology Fee Committee (STFC) Multimedia Lab Proposal Additional Information Paul Lovelady Background The Multimedia Lab is a great, creative resource for UWT and receives visitors from all programs and disciplines. Along with seventeen, open lab PCs, we have six Apple and three PC workstations, each equipped with the necessary hardware and software for professional, multi-format, media-rich projects. More than ever, our students are incorporating various forms of media (video, audio, YouTube, Photoshop, Powerpoint, podcasts, social networking, etc.) in their presentations, group projects and research. We would like to replace our three Lenovo PCs, which are not only beyond their current warranty but are beginning to have significant issues with their outdated graphics cards, sound cards and are very timeconsuming with video rendering, exporting and encoding. We are also requesting nine pairs of headsets. Our supply of inexpensive headphones (over 12 years old) have dwindled to only a couple of pair and with the built-in microphone, students will be able to use them to record narration and/or dialogue for their projects. They will also be beneficial for next quarter s wide-release of Tegrity. Sometime this spring, all UW students will have access to a screencapturing solution through their MyUW called Tegrity. While it is currently being deployed to campus classrooms, students will soon have the ability to create video demonstrations, presentations and chats. We would like to purchase four webcams for use on any of the computers in CP 005. The MMLab is also requesting three DVD players as replacements, an additional memory card reader as more and more of our source video is SD/SDHC-based, three computer speaker sets, several 9 pin to 4 pin firewire cables and an Apple minidv to VGA adapter for our station that projects to the screen for training. Lastly, a common request we get from students is for sound effects. Currently, we need to scour the web, download and re-encode them prior to dropping into projects. We would like to purchase three libraries from Digital Juice that would consist of 30 DVDs and over 37,000 keyword searchable sound effects in over 200 categories. Benefit to Students
4 Students at UWT will benefit from the proposed equipment acquisitions by having access to industry-level, multimedia resources. We currently have Adobe CS5.5 Master Collection that has bundled within it several major software applications for graphics and layout Illustrator and InDesign; posters and image editing Photoshop; web development Dreamweaver and Flash; and Video/Motion Graphics/Audio tools AfterEffects, Premiere Pro, Soundbooth and Encore. Our Apple workstations utilize Final Cut Pro, Motion, iphoto, imovie, idvd, Garageband as well the CS5.5 Master Collection mentioned above. The requested items will not only enable our PC workstations to work much better with this processor-intensive software, but they will also allow us to accommodate more students simultaneously as well as provide an optimal workflow on either side of the platform divide. Another major benefit to the students at the Multimedia Lab is the expertise of our staff. We are regularly available for one-on-one technical assistance and post-production advice and routinely support everyone in the technical spectrum from the timid to the savvy. Access Located on the Pacific Avenue level of Cherry Parkes (CP 005) the Multimedia Lab is open to all registered UWT students. We are currently staffed Monday through Thursday, 9-6 and Friday 9-3. During midterms and the weeks leading up to Finals Week, we try to extend our hours of operation, especially Fridays. We are primarily a drop-in lab but requests can also be made for appointments at athelp@u.washington.edu. Timeline Installation and upgrades will take place no later than summer 2012 and be in place for the first day of the autumn quarter. Resources/Budget Academic Technologies, as well as Computer Services, will install, support and maintain the items requested. Endorsements/Alternative Funding Patrick Pow, Director, Information Technology; Forrest Tyree, Manager, Client and Technical Services, Computer Services.
