SPI/UL Cable Hea.ng Study AUTHOR- FRED DAWSON THE CHEMOURS COMPANY NEC PANEL 16 PRINCIPAL MEMBER
Overview - Increasing power demands - Increasing power creates a poten2al problem - The Na2onal Electrical Code (NEC) controls installa2ons - Where does the NEC apply - Installa2ons with high cable loading - The problem - A solu2on - SPI/UL Project - Some ini2al findings
Increasing Power Demands - Providing power over communica2ons cabling is a rapidly growing area of the industry - Forma2on of IEEE 802.3bt Task Force Current up to 1 amp/pair Power poten2ally up to 100 waqs - Other powering schemes HDBaseT (PoH) poten2ally up to 200 waqs Other proprietary powering systems
Increasing Power Creates a Poten.al Concern - Heat Dissipa2on decreases with the number of cables grouped together Smaller wire gauges generally produce more heat Raceway (conduit) selec2on and fill ra2o can affect heat dissipa2on
The NEC Controls Installa.on - TIA and other standards as well as manufacturers warran2es provide guidance on installa2on - The NEC (Na2onal Electrical Code) is law where it is adopted Installa2ons are based on the requirements of the NEC Installa2ons are inspected based on the requirements of the NEC - The NEC controls copper communica2ons/data cabling in two primary places Ar2cle 725 Class1, Class 2 and Class 3 Remote- control, Signaling and Power Limited Circuits Chapter 8 Communica2ons Systems - The NEC does not have any specific provisions for powering of communica:ons equipment Most applica2ons fall under Ar2cle 725 Class 2 Power Limited Circuits Most communica2ons applica2ons have no guidance. Most AHJ s will reference Ar2cle 725 as the applica2ons are similar
NEC Ar.cle Class 2 Power Limited Circuits have the following limits from Table 11(B) Max 100 VA Max current =1.67 amps - Ar2cle (3) Temperature Limita2on of Conductors. No conductor shall be used in such a manner that its opera2ng temperature exceeds that designated for the type of insulated conductor involved. - Listed informa2on technology equipment limited- power circuits references UL UL interpreta2on of UL Up to 100 waqs per circuit allowable Up to 400 waqs possible with 4 pair twisted pair cable.
Where does the NEC apply
Installa.ons with high cable loading
Installa.ons with high cable loading
The Problem - The NEC has no guidelines for powering over communica2ons cabling as it is currently being implemented - Many exis2ng cabling installa2ons aren t designed to manage the heat from higher power levels - The poten:al exists for cable overhea:ng with: Previously installed cabling plants when higher (allowable) currents or power is used by newly installed higher power devices New installa2ons that don t make provision for hea2ng during installa2on - The overhea:ng of cables is a safety concern for the NEC
A Solu.on - Provide a solu:on before someone else does - Make changes to the NEC to provide guidance on the safe applica2on of powering over communica2ons cables SPI submiqed a number of PI s to enable powering over communica2ons cabling in Ar2cles 725 and 840 and to supplement exis2ng ampacity tables Data is needed to support the PI s The SPI/UL study was ini2ated to provide data to support and op2mize the PI s - The PI s specifically provide for the use of exis:ng and newly installed Category cable - One PI proposes a listed and labeled cable that can be used for most applica2ons without concern This may have some restric:ons
SPI/UL Project - SPI manages the study at UL - Most communica2ons cabling manufacturers were approached to par2cipate in the study - All members of CCCA (Communica2ons Cabling and Connec2vity Associa2on) were invited to join the study. - Phase 1 of the project is developing data to support the SPI PI s that enable the safe use of exis2ng and new installa2ons of powered communica2ons cabling within the NEC
Some Ini.al Findings
Ini.al findings from Phase 1 as of mid June Larger bundles get hoqer with less current applied Enclosed cables get hoqer Cables exceed 60 o C at current levels well below that permiqed by the NEC Class 2 tables Cable failures occurred at current levels well below that permiqed by the NEC Class 2 tables In some configura2ons, cable failures occurred at current levels permiqed by UL (1.3 amperes) and even at the lower current used by high Power Source Modules (1 ampere)
