A database where you can search for potential job and internship opportunities. You have to register and take a simple quiz before you have access to this site. Do it early, it s very useful! Cornell Hotel Society basically, a Hotel School alumni association with chapters in multiple cities around the US and internationally. Your initials plus a number. Used for cornell s: Netid@cornell.edu. Also used with a password for your netprint account. You should receive communication from the school regarding setting a password once you have your netid. Seven digit numerical code found on your student ID card. You will obtain this ID card from the basement of Day Hall (across the street and two buildings down from the hotel school). Student health services building on campus. A short walk down the hill from the Hotel School. Call for an appointment, or just walk in. This is where you would go at the beginning of the year if you need to get any shots. Student health insurance requires that Gannett doctors be your primary physicans while on campus. Revenue per available room. A typical performance/comparison measure for hotels. You ll hear more about it in several courses. Cornell Hospitality Research. The Hotel School has its own research center and publications, including Cornell Hospitality Quarterly. Average daily rate. A typical performance/comparison measure for hotels. You ll hear more about it in several courses. Hospitality-speak for a hotel room. A 200 key hotel has 200 rooms. The account you use to print papers on campus. When you select print, the computer will ask you for your netid (defined above) and password. The school will put some initial funds in this account at the beginning of each semester. Copies are 9 cents each. You can add more money to the account as needed online. School of Hotel Administration Someone who owns hotels

You can get school supplies, textbooks, Cornell gear, etc. Use the computers inside the store to print a booklist based on your schedule so you don t have to write it all down. JGSM Johnson Graduate School of Management. Across the street in Sage Hall. This is where MBA (Masters of Business Administration) students attend classes. There is a friendly rivalry between the two graduate programs. You will often have classes with Johnson School students. Sage The red brick building across the street where MBA students attend classes. TCAT Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit this is the bus system. Incoming students should receive free bus passes with their student ID cards. The bus schedules can be found online at tcatbus.com. Popular routes include the 30 (downtown-cornell- Ithaca Mall), 15 (downtown-wegmans food shopping). Cmail Cornell mail account. IHG Intercontinental Hotels Group includes Intercontinental Hotels, Staybridge, Holiday Inn & Holiday Inn Express, Candlewood Suites, Crowne Plaza Marriott Hotel group that includes Ritz Carlton, Marriott, JW Marriott, Renaissance, Fairfield Inn, etc. Hilton Hotel group that includes Conrad, Waldorf-Astoria, Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton, Homewood Suites, Embassy Suites, etc. Starwood Hotel group that includes W, Westin, St. Regis, Sheraton, Four Points, Le Meridien, the Luxury Collection, Aloft, and Element Externship Required over winter break a short (usually 2-6 weeks) experience where you shadow a potential employer or shadow someone doing the type of job you might want to do upon graduation. You might complete a project for the organization, or just write an essay on what you learned from the experience. These are usually unpaid. Internship Short-term employment. Undergraduates are required to complete internships each summer. Master Class An optional one-credit class held off-campus during Winter Break. You visit a city (last year was Miami), tour some of the major hotels/restaurants/consulting firms, etc. It s a great opportunity to apply what you ve learned

Leadership Development Program alumni coach you as you participate in group projects. Great networking opportunity, and a great way to understand how you come across in a group setting. Professional Development Program a non-credit required program that you take throughout the year. You attend several workshops and networking events and write reflection papers on your job search skills and career development. In Ithaca if you live off campus you have to pay for trash, and you need to purchase stickers (at local grocery stores) and put these stickers on your trash cans on your weekly pick up day. Recycling is free. (More information can be obtained from your landlord; you just have to know to ask how it works!) Collegetown Bagels. An Ithaca staple, located in collegetown on the corner closest to campus. There are also other CTBs around the Ithaca area. An online course administration system. Most of your courses will have information posted online via their blackboard site, at blackboard.cornell.edu. Usually your professor will enroll you in the blackboard site after you have officially enrolled in the course itself. Statler Hall is the south side of the building, where students attend classes. Statler Hotel is the lodging facility. Hotel School course code. All courses taught through the hotel school will have HADM followed by a number. Numbers at 5000-level and above are graduate-level courses. Top Ten List of things to do during your summer in Ithaca: 1. The Ithaca Farmer s Market 2. Tour the waterfalls 3. Take pity on the people from Hawaii who have no idea what it's like to live on the East Coast. Bring reusable bags to Wegmans. Don't forget to floss. Summer is short. Fall is even shorter.
