Program Quality Indicators The Undergraduate Business Program
Program Quality Indicators The Undergraduate Business Program Lipscomb University College of Business 2015
Assessment of Learning in the Undergraduate Program of the College of Business Measures are regularly taken to assess whether or not the learning goals of the college are being met and to determine means for improving outcomes where improvement is needed. A primary means for measuring student learning outcomes for the undergraduate program is the Peregrine exam, a nationally normed exam that measures student knowledge and abilities across a set of common professional core areas within colleges of business, these professional core areas of knowledge and abilities are the primarey areas of instruction. Other measures are used to gain insight into student learning and satisfaction. The following chart presents results from the Peregrine exam. The primary features to note in the slide are: The benchmark level of performance was established for business majors by measures taken across several semesters the base score of performance, against what future scores will be compared to, determine the effectiveness of the performance improvement efforts of the college. The presentation of recent exam results of college s majors. The presentation of exam scores from two comparison groups the schools in Region 3 of ACBSP (Lipscomb s region) that use the Peregrine exam and the AACSB schools that employ the Peregrine exam. The scoring scale provided by Peregrine for interpreting student performance on the exam.* *Average scores in the Peregrine scoring system could be perceived as relatively poor scores when that is not actually the case. On a percentile basis, a score falling in the Average category can be a good score relative to the performance of students in a comparison group. For example, the college s benchmark Accounting score is 59%, a score that is an 80th percentile score for Lipscomb students vs. ACBSP Region 3 schools. The average percentile ranking for Lipscomb College of Business students vs. ACBSP Region 3 schools is 72 across all the scores for the CPC areas measured by the Peregrine Exam. 3

Students are given the opportunity to indicate the degree to which they agree or disagree that the university, or a college within the university, has accomplished some educational task. In some cases; items are worded in such a manner as to make lower scores the desired scores. This is the case for the items presented above where relatively few students taking the survey disagreed with the statements regarding the development of communication skills during their studies in the College of Business. 6
SSI Item 8 The content of the courses within my major is valuable. The Student Satisfaction Inventory is a tool that measures student satisfaction and priorities on a seven-point scale. The results indicate how satisfied students are as well as what issues are important to them. For the years presented above, each group of bars represents College of Business student rankings of the importance placed on the inventory item, the rankings of satisfaction with their actual experience regarding that inventory item, and the gap between those rankings. A gap of 1.0 or greater is large enough to cause concern and encourage improvement efforts. For the three academic years presented, the gap between the importance ranking and the student satisfaction ranking is always less than 1.0. This is a strong indication that Lipscomb College of Business students, as a group, are satisfied with their experience regarding the content of the courses in their major. 7
Job Placement Rates Undergraduate Program of the College of Business* The College of Business at Lipscomb University has a history of successful placement of its undergraduate students.
