3 Sydney Knowledge and Regulation Test A Guide for Taxi Drivers This guide is to help taxi drivers prepare for the Sydney Knowledge and Regulation Test. As a Taxi driver, you must: Have a good knowledge of the City of Sydney and surrounding suburbs Know all major traffic routes Be f amiliar with popular places of interest Know the rules and regulations, including road rules, that relate to your role as a taxi driver Know how to use a street directory quickly and effectively The Sydney Knowledge and Regulation Test is designed to assess your knowledge and skills in these areas. It is essential that you study the inf ormation in this guide in order to pass the test. This test is updated on a regular basis, so please ensure you have the current version of this guide. You must pass this test bef ore completing your TaxiCare Plus Course. 4 Introduction PROCEDURES When you first sit for the Sydney Knowledge and Regulation Test you must bring: Current Driver s Licence English Language Assessment Certificate issued by NSW Adult Migrant English Services (AMES) Certificate of Readiness for the Sydney Knowledge and Regulation Test from your training school Completed Training Workbooks 1, B and PD of Module 1 of the currently approved training course, with the declaration signed by your Registered Training Organisation (RTO) Proof of eligibility passport / birth certificate or citizenship certificate After entering the testing room, you will be asked to: Turn off your mobile phone and give it to the testing officer Hand over any bags, papers, notes, street directories, etc. that you have with you (these items will be placed in a visible position) You cannot leave the testing room until the test is finished. You may only use the Street Directory provided by the testing officer. The testing officer will explain the procedures and ensure that you fully understand the test requirements. You may ask the testing officer questions about the exam at any time, however testing officers cannot help or advise you of the answer to any test question. You will be under observation by Roads and Maritime Services staff during the test. If you are caught cheating you may not be considered to be of good repute or a fit and proper person to be the driver of a public passenger vehicle. In this case your application for a Taxi Driver Authority may be refused and you will not be able to re- sit the exam until you have submitted a new application and paid the required fee. CANCELLATIONS If you need to cancel your test booking, you must notif y Roads and Maritime Services and then contact your school to reschedule your test booking. Roads and Maritime Services,

5 INSTRUCTIONS This is a computer-based test. The questions you will be given are selected at random by the computer from a databank of 700 questions. Questions in sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the test are all multiple choice. The computer will randomly order 4 answer options and you must choose the most correct answer. This is what the test screen looks like bef ore you start ABOUT THE TEST You have a total of 44 minutes to complete Sections 1 to 4. Section 5 is a practical street directory test, which you have 16 minutes to complete. 6 PRACTICE TEST There is a short practice test f or you to become familiar with the types of questions and how to answer them. The practice test contains f our questions selected at random. The questions do not count towards your final score, and there is no time limit on the practice questions. At the end of the Practice Test, a message will come on the screen explaining that Section 1 is about to start. PROCEDURES FOR THE TEST YOUR TEST W ILL COMMENCE IMMEDIATELY. Ensure you read each question carefully and be mindful of the time as there is a time limit for each section. Note: TIME LEFT to answer the section is displayed on the screen above the question. The first time you sit f or the test you will complete all sections. If you pass a section, you will be congratulated and can move on to the next section. If you answer more than the allowed number of questions incorrectly, you will fail that section of the test. Click to move on to the next section of the test. After you finish Section 4 the computer will tell you to press the buzzer and wait f or the testing officer. If they have not come to assist you within 3 minutes please press the buzzer again. 7 Follow the instructions given by the testing officer who will test you on Section 5 Street Directory Test. You will be asked 8 questions, selected at random, and the testing officer will type your answers into the computer. At the completion of the test, you will be given your results. If you pass, you will be issued with a pass certificate to present to your school in order to complete your course. If you fail one or more sections of the test, you will be issued with a Test Report giving your results f or each section. You will only be re-tested on the sections that you failed. Your school will book you in to be re-tested on those sections. When you have passed all sections of the test, you will be issued with a certificate. NOTE: You can only sit f or the test three times (the initial test and then 2 attempts after that). If you f ail after the third test you will be required to submit a new application to be a Taxi Driver and pay the required f ee. If you are not satisfied with the result of a test, you should discuss the matter with your nominated training school, who can then liaise with Roads and Maritime Services directly. Applicants who fail to follow instructions from Roads and Maritime Services staff both during, and at the conclusion of, the Sydney Knowledge Test may jeopardise their application for a taxi driver authority. COLLECTING YOUR TAXI DRIVER AUTHORITY CARD Prior to a driver authority card being issued, you must provide your TAXICARE PLUS BRONZE LEVEL certificate, issued by your training school, to Roads and Maritime Services. 8 Section 1 Street Knowledge Section 1 is designed to assess your knowledge of major streets in: The Sydney CBD Inner city suburbs Chatswood North Sydney Parramatta Major streets used in the Test are those defined in your street directory as: Freeways Motorways Main Roads Secondary Roads Major Local Roads You need to know where streets are located, and for one way streets, the direction in which they run. You also need to know the entrance and exit lanes to and from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel, and all major routes out of the city. There are 10 computer-based multiple-choice questions, to be completed in 8 minutes. A maximum of 2 errors is allowed. How to Answer Multiple Choice Questions 1. Read the question 2. 37 Section 5 Street Directory Section 5 is designed to assess your ability to use a street directory quickly and eff ectively. You will need to be very f amiliar with the contents and index of the street directory. You will use the street directory supplied by Roads & Maritime Services to answer questions. In this section there are 2 types of question: 1) Fixed-Point (LOCATE) 2) Point to Point (DEMONSTRATE) Fixed Point Questions (LOCATE) To answer these questions correctly you must: 1. Find the location in the street directory index. 2. Show the testing officer where it is on the correct map. Point to Point Questions (DEMONSTRATE) To answer these questions correctly you must: 1. Locate the start and end points in the street directory index. 2. Locate the correct maps. 3. Show the testing officer the first point and then demonstrate the SHORTEST route to the second point. 4. Name the main roads you will travel along as you show the route you would take. You may use the key maps in the front of the street directory to help work out the shortest route, but you may not use them to answer the question. You may use Motorways, but must inf orm the testing officer that the passenger must be asked first and be willing to pay the toll. You must not mark the street directory at any time with a pen or pencil. 5. The testing officer will stop the test and you will have f ailed if you: a) Point to the wrong street or location. b) Travel along anything other than a road or bridge e.g. a railway line, river etc. c) Travel the wrong way along a one-way street. d) Travel across parks or waterways. e) Use a cul-de-sac or no through road as a through street. f) Fail to demonstrate the SHORTEST route.
