2 Domain Technology as a Planning and Productivity Tool Core Standard 2 Students integrate technology to arrange materials and solve problems efficiently. ITE-2.2 Use appropriate technology to plan, develop, edit and present material to different types of audiences both in a group or individually (i.e., paper, web page, multimedia presentation, publications, speech, hypermedia, etc.) ITE-2.3 Integrate information and communication technology to analyze a real-world problem, design and implement procedures to monitor information, set timelines, and evaluate progress toward the solution Project Description: You are: You are a Network Technician assigned to a design team for HopperNet. Your design team has worked together two years designing networks for client You are faced with: A client, Acme Corporation, needs a wireless network for its corporate offices. You have been asked to design a wireless network that will allow Acme Corporation s employees to move throughout the workplace while remaining continuously connected to the network via their wireless devices. Your team is competing against several other networking companies for the Acme Corporation s design job. Technical Prompt Your team must research, design, and evaluate a wireless network for Acme Corporation. Steps in the design process may include researching various wireless standards. a hardware list power sources for hardware mapped wireless access point (physical topology) performance expectations including fault tolerance scalability, anticipating technology changes in the next ten years security FCC licensing if necessary Literacy Prompt Your team will research wireless technology to justify your design. You will prepare a written proposal with timeline and give an oral presentation to the IT Manager. You must document SREB Enhanced CTE v No Dead Zones Here: Designing a Wireless Network 2

3 your resources used to support your work. Science Prompt Your team will research variations within the job site that may potentially impact the wireless network medium, radio waves, including: Weather (such as outside on the loading dock) Physical barriers (steel racks, for example) Sources of EMI, RFI, etc. Math Prompt Your team will calculate the area of coverage for the entire network based on blueprints of the job site. The final proposal with include the total cost of the network including installation costs. SCI.P Describe the electromagnetic spectrum (i.e., radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays) in terms of frequency, wavelength and energy. Recognize that all these waves travel in a vacuum at the same speed. Teams will research wireless standards, then apply it to design a wireless network to meet the needs of a company. Thinking like a Professional: The Design or Problem-Solving Process Think about the just-in-time instruction students would need to have prior to accomplishing each of the steps in the design or problem-solving process. Include both technical and academic just-in-time instruction. Ask/Inquire Teaming Problem Identification & Entry Event and Project Launch? Introduce the project and give each student the project description. Have students think-pairshare their questions about the project logistics. Youtube video? 5 What will you do during this phase of the process? Students should share their questions, thoughts, concerns and ideas with their partner, then with the group. Each group should write a list of what they know and what they need to research to start the project. Each group should document possible resources (Web sites, etc.) that could be used for the project. Establish the teams for this project. Have each team meet to organize each member role and responsibilities. The team must create a timeline for each phase of the project to meet the deadlines. Each team will provide the instructor with each team member s responsibilities and a written plan of action with timeline for the instructor s approval. Imagine Development Research & Teams will research wireless networks and any other pertinent topics, recording the resources used (URLs, etc.). Plan Design Based on the floor plan provided, design a plan for wireless coverage for the building. The design should include a hardware list (with costs), security and physical topology. Create, Test & Evaluate Each team will create and test the network using Packet Tracer, documenting the results of SREB Enhanced CTE v No Dead Zones Here: Designing a Wireless Network 5

6 each test for comparison. Each test will include the topology with hardware and software used lists. Improve Make changes to the initial design to enhance and improve networking performance, scalability and security based on the team s test results. Document any changes and why they are being implemented, as well as defend any additional costs. Communicate Each team will present their final design and documentation, in both written and oral formats, to a group representing Acme Corporation. Written report with include all citations in APA format. Thinking like a Professional: The Professional Notebook What are the essential components of the Professional Notebook students will keep for this project? Each student will maintain a notebook documenting each step of the project. All supporting documentation used for this project should be recorded in the notebook (URL, book, etc.) that will be used to create the citation for the written final design document.
