2 R-4 Academics Policy: R-4 Information, Media and Technology Skills Students graduate prepared for life and work in the 21 st Century able to use learning and innovation skills. Superintendent Interpretation: Within the context of core knowledge instruction our students also must be exposed to and demonstrate acquisition of essential 21st Century Skills. Students accomplish this through building on their base of core academic subject knowledge. We believe mastery of both the core subjects and the 21st century skills is essential for students in the 21st century. Board Approved R-4 Information, Media and Technology Measure: HMS Technology Proficiency This is measured by the percent of students with a C or better in the 8 th grade Multimedia class. Targets for R-4: 1. Maintain % of students proficient, and 2. Maintain lack of gaps in % proficient among subgroups R-4 Data Analysis: Although it may not appear the district is making progress in R-4 IMT Skills, background that is very relevant to this data may assist the board in making this decision. In , there was a different teacher in the multi-media teaching position than had been for the last several years. The new teacher is a veteran teacher who had been a member of the ELA department at the middle school until requesting to be reassigned to the multi-media position. Teaching the first year in any subject or grade, regardless of years of experience in a different teaching position, is a significant change. It takes time to deeply understand the curriculum, instruction, assessments and procedures such as grading. In addition, grading practices are different for each teacher. Procedures for accepting and grading late work is one of those differences. The new multi-media teacher made enhancements to the multi-media curriculum in More CCR standards were embedded into lessons. This was done through intentional embedding of curriculum from the core subjects into the multi-media class curriculum. For example, one new project integrates ELA and American history CCR standards into the multi-media course. Students did a Glogster ( project based on the American Revolution. This satisfies one of the requirements of each student s ELA portfolio, and also incorporates middle school speaking and listening CCR standards as well. The additional rigor added to the project required students to try new and more difficult uses of technology as well as more rigorous ELA and social studies integration. This is only one example of the In the first trimester of the school year currently, 89% of students have a grade of C or above.
3 Evidence of Progress: R-4 - HMS Technology Proficiency Target n Students with a C or better in the 8th gr Multi-media Class Disaggregated subgroups: F/R Disability ELL African American Hispanic White * Maintain % of students proficient * Maintain lack of gaps in % proficient among subgroups Baseline 294 / % 168 / % n n n / % 212 / % 45 / % 52 / % 13 / % 22 / % 20 / % 33 / % 48 / % 49 / % 219 / % 262 / % 327/ % 207 / % 39 / % 23 / % 23 / % 68 / % 229 / % 310 / % 188 / % 33 / % 13 / % 10 / % 62 / % 218 / % - Annual continuous improvement in % of students proficient - Decline is less than 5%; Not statistically significant - Higher than baseline, lower than last year - The decline is greater than 5%

Pathways, Articulations, and possible careers at HHS CTEA related to IMT Skills This is being included for the board to see the tech opportunities students have in pathways at HHS, and to point out how embedded technology is in many of our pathways. The attached four pathways are by no means the only pathways that have technology embedded at HHS. For example, the Business Entrepreneurship & Management and Marketing pathways as well as many others also have IMT skills embedded. AV Communications, Web & Digital Communications, Network Systems, Programming & Software Development, Business Entrepreneurship & Management, and Marketing Are by no means the only pathways that have technology embedded at HHS. For example, the Business Entrepreneurship & Management and Marketing pathways as well as many others also have IMT skills embedded.

10 Appendix C Capacity Building in and beyond Many of the Information, Media and Technology Skills are in the new revision of the Results policies R-5 Technology Competency. The new R-5 will be defined soon, and administration will work together with teachers to define and interpret this policy as well as develop curriculum that integrates technology understanding and use. Many of the core curriculum areas have students using technology as a tool to research, organize, manage and communicate. Creating and evaluating information in order to function successfully in our society is becoming an even more important part of all core curriculum areas. An understanding of legal and ethical issues surrounding technology is being embedded in curriculum beginning in elementary school. The CCR standards for ELA/Social Studies/Technical Subjects include standards that relate to and embed technology use and understanding. These standards require us to use technology more deeply and further examine where we can use technology more effectively and efficiently in the classroom. As we get further along into our K-12 implementation of the CCR standards, these will be mapped for every core course. A few examples are: Reading standards for literacy in History/Social Studies RH : Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, as well as in words) in order to address a question or solve a problem. Reading standards for Informational Text, RH.8.7: Compare and contrast a text to an audio, video, or multimedia version of the text, analyzing each medium s portrayal of the subject (e.g., how the delivery of a speech affects the impact of the words). Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects, RHST.CCR : Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats and media, including visually and qualitatively, as well as in words. Writing Standards, W : Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusion of others while avoiding plagiarism and providing basic bibliographic information for sources.
