It can also be one of the most rewarding experiences for a student. If you are considering running for a state office, be sure you are prepared! Candidates Applications CTE Creating Excellence Awards The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Creating Excellence Awards application packet was released in Superintendent s Memo # dated Friday, January 22. Submit applications for exemplary programs, advisory committees, and business and industry partnerships to the local CTE Administrator. CTE Administrators will submit the local award recipients applications to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). 3 SkillsUSA Virginia Update February 8, 2016 Page 3 Time to Celebrate SkillsUSA Week! SkillsUSA has its own week of celebration, held this year on Feb You can participate in SkillsUSA Week lots of different ways: hold an open house, invite local media to tour your programs, conduct a community service project, and work with area businesses to build more meaningful partnerships, or engage with policymakers to talk about the value of technical education. For a sample calendar, proclamation and press release, go to: Happy CTE Month - February If a whole week isn t enough, you can celebrate CTE Month during the entire month of February. ACTE sponsors this public awareness campaign each February to celebrate career and technical education programs across the nation. This year s theme of Opportunities for Career Success provides a way to tell stories of leadership and excellence while raising awareness of the crucial role that CTE plays in preparing students for careers. For more information, go to: New State Contest: Additive Manufacturing Yes, we have added a new demonstration contest to the state level: Additive Manufacturing. It will be a team of two. They must be paid SkillsUSA members. For more contest information please visit then go to Additive Manufacturing to download the contest guidelines. CTE Presidential Scholars For the first time, up to 20 CTE Presidential Scholars will be honored by the White House. The scholars program was established in 1964 to recognize and honor some of our nation s most distinguished graduating high-school seniors. In 2015, it was expanded to recognize ability and accomplishment in career and technical education. This year s CTE students are being selected based on their accomplishments through their chief state school officers, who received a total of 236 names. The semifinalists have been posted by the U.S. Department of Education, and we re checking to see how many SkillsUSA students are listed. To be considered further, these candidates must submit required essays, self-assessments and transcripts. They will then be evaluated on academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership, service and a personal essay. The finalists will be invited to a recognition ceremony held in June. National Membership Deadline Approaching The national membership deadline is March 1. Students must meet both state and national deadlines to be eligible for national competition, serve as voting delegates or run for national office. There is a new format and a new engagement section posted about SkillsUSA Week and CTE Month. The new site has also been expanded with state contacts so users can reach their governor, lieutenant governor, state senators and state attorneys general, in addition to the president, vice president, members of the U.S. Congress and the news media. To see it all, go to: Through Hypertherm, Spark Something Great Don t miss your chance to apply for Hypertherm s Spark Something Great educational grant. The grant will award 10 schools with a Powermax45 plasma cutting and gouging system, a Plasma Cutting Technology: Theory and Practice curriculum kit and a training visit from a Hypertherm technical representative. The program aims to ensure the next generation of welders and metal fabricators know how to properly cut and gouge with plasma by making available to schools the latest cutting equipment and standardized instruction. Grant winners from 2015 included the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Knoxville. Ensure that your school is among one of the winning applications this year. Applications are due on or before April 1, with grant decisions communicated by May 2. The grant is available to schools located within the United States, Canada and Mexico. More information, including instructions for submitting a grant application, is available at: Mentoring: Student2Student SkillsUSA sponsors a national recognition program based on the Student2Student mentoring program. Any chapter involved in mentoring can submit its project plan, description and outcomes. The winning chapter will be recognized at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference, in the SkillsUSA Awards and Recognition book and at an event during the conference. In addition, the overall winning chapter will be invited to present its winning mentoring program as a part of SkillsUSA University. You can also use this link to download the Mentoring Guide: New Grants Promote Advanced Manufacturing Careers The National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS), the Gene Haas Foundation and the Edge Factor have announced a new partnership to provide schools and training centers with cutting-edge educational materials to inspire students and provide pathways to advanced manufacturing careers. Through the INSPIRE Grant Program, schools will receive funding towards edufactor memberships, providing them access to an extensive library of cinematic films and TV series; CTE, STEM and event resources; hands-on CNC and 3-D printing; and other interactive activities. Grant funds provide a $500 discount for level three edufactor memberships (list price $1,500). The membership subscription covers a 12-month period. For more information and to apply, go to: or

SkillsUSA is integral to your CTE program, so this is the perfect opportunity to raise awareness and share information about CTE and SkillsUSA. 6 SkillsUSA Virginia Update February 8, 2016 Page 6 Round 2 CTE Recruitment Time Use the resources you have and ensure that every seat is filled in your CTE program by developing an awesome promotional plan. District and regional competitions are here, so what can you do to take that success to the next level? Check out this scenario: Five of your students win first place at district competition. Congrats! Now get the word out! 1. Work to have your students achievements placed in the morning announcements, on a televised broadcast and in the school newspaper. Students may develop the announcement or news release. 2. Work with students in your CTE program to develop a bulletin board. Members should include photographs of the event and a basic overview of the competition to allow students and teachers to learn more. This may serve as both recognition of the students and a way to recruit additional students into the program. 3. Work with fellow teachers to allow students to speak to various classes about the activity they participated in and to share their experiences. Have fun as you recruit, and students will pick up on the energy and excitement you have for your program and SkillsUSA. $2,000 School Grant Sponsored by Lowe s for the Chapter Excellence Program, Models of Excellence Award Grant Your chapter or section may qualify for this award. Don t miss this exciting opportunity for your chapter to be recognized and honored for exemplary chapter performance as well as the chance to receive $2,000. The Chapter Excellence Program (CEP) establishes a quality baseline that all chapters are encouraged to attain with extra incentive for exemplary chapter performance. The program consists of four award levels, with the first three levels recognized by the state and the final level eligible for national recognition. Twenty-four chapters will be recognized as Models of Excellence and will receive a $2,000 grant. It s not too late, but state deadlines are quickly approaching. Ensure that your chapter is receiving the recognition it deserves by completing the Chapter of Excellence application.
