1 INDIANA PROFILE RE-IMAGINING TEACHING AND LEARNING

2 NEW TECH NETWORK New Tech Network is a non-profit school development organization dedicated to ensuring all students develop the skills and acquire the knowledge necessary to thrive in post-secondary education, career and civic life. We provide professional development, teacher and school leader coaching, and a learning management system to all schools in the Network. Our work is based on the core belief that high impact schools are centered on culture that empowers, teaching that engages, and technology that enables so that students graduate ready for college and career. A LEARNING COMMUNITY New Tech Network (NTN) is a rapidly growing network of schools serving diverse communities in 23 states. Indiana is home to nearly 2% of the Network s schools. NTN schools in Indiana are in the early years of implementation and are just beginning to graduate students. As the schools mature, we will be able to measure post-secondary success. IN INDIANA, NEW TECH DESIGN PRINCIPLES ARE IMPLEMENTED... In Various Design Types... IN INDIANA, NEW TECH STUDENTS Graduate high school at a rate greater than the national average 44% 26% 3% I think that this school does a really good job of trying to prepare us for our future. We learn people skills which you will need in order to be successful in most every part in life: collaboration skills, trust, respect, responsibility, work ethic, and knowledge in all of our studies. 3 A DIVERSE STUDENT BODY The students enrolled in NTN schools in Indiana are as diverse as the communities and schools in which they learn and grow. Half of NTN schools in Indiana are schools of choice, where students elect to enroll based on their desire to be part of the NTN learning community. The remaining half of NTN schools are neighborhood, or destination schools. In Indiana, the composition of the student body differs greatly from school to school. One urban school serves a population where 9 of the student body is comprised of students of color, whereas four rural schools serve students who are predominantly Caucasian. Further, the percent of students eligible for free or reduced price meals in NTN Indiana schools ranges from 24% to 88%, indicating the socio-economic diversity of the schools. NEW TECH STUDENT BODY DIVERSITY ( ) NTN IN ALL NTN AVG IN SMALLEST (NTN IN) LARGEST (NTN IN) African American American Indian Asian Hispanic White Multi-Racial or Other Male Female English Language Learners Special Education Free and Reduced Lunch 1% 8% 74% 4% 54% 46% 53% 12% 2% 9% 72% NR NR 1 24% 21% 2% 54% 46% 9% 47% 1% 43% 31% 6% 24% 9 7% 4% 28% 97% 11% 69% 56% 19% 19% 88% COLLEGE ELIGIBILITY AND PREPARATION With the goal that all students graduate high school ready for college and career, NTN schools strive to graduate students who are both eligible and prepared for any post-secondary option. NTN believes that preparation FRESHMEN SENIORS GAIN CWRA RESULTS College and Work Readiness Assessment HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION Average Cohort Graduation Rates for Class of 21 NATIONAL NTN INDIANA ALL CWRA includes not only academic knowledge, but also the deeper learning skills necessary to interact with content and apply knowledge. To gauge student growth and attainment of deeper learning, NTN utilizes the College and Work Readiness Assessment (CWRA). i The CWRA, administered by the Council for Aid to Education, uses realistic performance tasks to assess four domains of deeper learning: analytical reasoning and evaluation, writing effectiveness, writing mechanics and problem solving. Students in New Tech Network schools demonstrate 7 more growth in measures of deeper learning between their freshman and senior years than do students in the national CWRA comparison sample. The outstanding growth of NTN students is a promising indicator of the impact of New Tech Network schools. To further prepare students for college and career, the NTN schools in Indiana have built strong partnerships with institutes of higher education. NTN students engage in college level coursework and earn college credits while enrolled in and completing high school. The partnerships also provide a seamless path to college enrollment upon high school graduation for many NTN students. NATIONAL NEW TECH INDIANA NEW TECH 78% 83% 77% 82% Indiana NTN students graduate at a rate 6% greater than the state average. ii

4 STANDARDIZED ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT New Tech Network believes that two effective ways to measure deeper learning are through performance assessments embedded in project-based learning and authentic performance tasks like those contained in the College Work Readiness Assessment (CWRA). However, NTN also recognizes that standardized academic assessments are commonly used metrics for judging school performance. New Tech schools in Indiana perform much like comparison schools and district schools on the state standardized assessments. However, because many of the Indiana NTN schools are operated as schools-within-schools, disaggregating NTN students scores on state assessments is difficult. Where data is available, just under half of Indiana NTN schools outperform, as measured by percent of students reaching proficiency, comparison schools and district performance on 1th grade reading. In science, 7% of Indiana NTN schools outperform their home districts. On college entrance exams, Indiana NTN students performance is mixed. Students in NTN schools in Indiana score better than the national average on ACT and lower than the national average on the SAT. Six NTN schools in Indiana reported an average score of 22.6 on the ACT compared to the national average of Three schools reported participation on the SAT, with an average score of 1491, slightly lower than the national average of STUDENT ENGAGEMENT Each Indiana NTN school develops and maintains a culture that promotes trust, respect, and responsibility. Students and teachers alike have exceptional ownership of the learning experience and their school environment. Working on projects and in teams, students are accountable to their peers and acquire a level of responsibility similar to what they would experience in a professional work environment. By making learning relevant to students and providing a collaborative learning culture, student engagement reaches new levels. Schools in the New Tech Network across Indiana boast an average 96% attendance rate and an average 91% of students returning each year. This high level of engagement leads to deeper learning, higher graduation rates, and greater enrollment and persistence in college. The success of New Tech students does not come easily or overnight. Success is an outcome of hard work. The collaboration between and among administrators, teachers and students in the learning community, the commitment of district leaders and community partners along with full support of New Tech Network through professional development and personalized coaching combine to create compelling, relevant and meaningful education. Re-imagining teaching and learning in this way results in sustainable innovation that ensures all high school graduates are college and career ready. END NOTES i A representative sample of 1% of New Tech Network schools participates in the CWRA annually. The 12 schools participating in the CWRA in are located in mid-size towns as well as urban, suburban and rural locales in five states. These NTN schools serve students from all ethnic groups and diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The comparison sample for CWRA is comprised of 92 high schools, consisting largely of independent (private) schools, and freshmen in 169 colleges across the US. ii High school graduation is measured using a 4-year cohort graduation rate by calculating the percent of 9th grade students who complete high school in four years.
