SME Division Faculty Growth Positions Prioritization Meeting November 21, 2014
Instruction Outlook The Instruction Outlook identifies the following as areas to address with new hires The most impacted classes based on fill rates and waitlists Unmet demand in classes Priority considerations Productivity Transfer degree and CTE degree demand Basic Skills Needs
SME Faculty Positions Five positions requested by the SME division All five meet these criteria Compounding factor Difficulty of finding and retaining adjuncts Ranked order 1. Chemistry 2. Mathematics Replacement 3. Astronomy 4. Anatomy/Physiology 5. Mathematics true growth
This Presentation Out of respect for the committee s time and to eliminate redundancy Two math positions will be presented together at the end. But their rationale is slightly different: 1. Don t go backward 2. Move forward Order will be 1. Chemistry 2. Astronomy 3. Anatomy/Physiology 4. Mathematics positions
Chemistry
Chemistry - Overview Role in MJC s Curriculum (# declared in major at MJC) Chemistry (166) Physics (94), Biology (450), and Engineering (138) Nursing (1655) General Education Three primary sequences General Chemistry for Majors: Organic Chemistry for Majors: , new 4-unit Allied Health Chemistry: Other courses: 142-PreChem, 150-GE Chem, 164-GE Chem Lab Faculty 4 Full-time (was 6 Full-time in prior to 2008) 6 Part-time
Chemistry Curriculum Changes Modernized organic chemistry curriculum via micro-scale experiments (see photo) Needed - Environmental/Quantitative Analysis Course Prep for vocational lab jobs Prep for transfer as chemistry major Needed - Certificate in Chemistry Environmental labs Food processing facilities Needed More General Education Sciences Chem 150 (non-majors, general education, online and hybrid options) Chem 164 (separate physical science lab to couple with Chem 150 or Chem 142)
Chemistry Recent growth Enrollment is up! Fall 2014 Seven sections of Chem 101, up from six in previous years Added summer Chem 102 Fall Chem 112 two full sections Spring Chem 113 two full sections Huge demand for Chem 143 Up from two sections of Chem 144 per year to six All four full-time faculty teaching some overload. One exceeded 200% this fall to address needs.
Chemistry - Demand Among first subjects to fill Students add to waitlist versus enroll in other disciplines High census fill rates 113% As of today 166 waitlisted Need 7 more sections to meet demand
Chemistry Productivity Stacked lectures with separate labs Two, three, or four sections meet together for lecture Separate lab sessions to meet safety guidelines Net productivity is FTES/FTEF or 626 WSCH/FTEF (525 is considered acceptable) Hiring a chemistry faculty member is wise investment of the college s limited salary funds
Chemistry Transfer Degree C-ID website Chemistry TMC has been finalized New IGETC for STEM approved CCCCO is waiting on approval of CSU-GE for STEM before posting AS-T in Chemistry for Transfer to website However, MJC Chemistry Department has been proactive Already changed their curriculum to align with minimum units on C-ID descriptors On CCCCO approval, MJC poised to immediately apply for approval of the new degree
Chemistry CTE degree Over 1600 MJC students are working toward the requirements of the nursing degree Chemistry 143 has been a critical component of the prenursing pathway Under the new Intersegmental Model Curriculum for Nursing, chemistry continues to be a requirement. Nursing Model Curriculum requires a 4-unit chemistry course MJC Chemistry Department responded by reducing Chem 143 from 5 units to 4 units
Chemistry - Summary Large, unmet demand Highly impacted - Bottlenecks for pre-nursing students High productivity Large number of students pursuing science and nursing degrees Hiring a chemistry faculty member as a growth position is an excellent decision and meets the colleges needs
Astronomy
Astronomy - Overview General Education Course and Taken by Science Majors Astronomy 160 Introduction to Astronomy Astronomy 151 Intro to Astronomy Laboratory Facility Investment 107-seat state-of-the-art Planetarium with multi-million dollar projection system 28 research grade telescope in fourth floor Observatory Class set of student telescopes Community Need Telescope nights open to the public Planetarium shows strong attendance Fervent community interest in astronomy Most accessible of sciences very visual Faculty Zero Full-time (was 1 Full-time until 2009) 1 Shared FT Physics and Astronomy 2 Part-time
Astronomy is growing. Fall 2013 (completion of Science Community Center) Success in astronomy courses skyrocket! 53% in >>>>> 75% in Fall 2013 Fall Fill rates for astronomy courses are very high! 111% capacity in Fall 2013 in 3 courses >>>>>113% in Fall 2014 in 4 courses Strong public interest in astronomy 600+ attended MAPS talk in MSR by UC Berkeley Astronomer
Astronomy is productive. Overall productivity in Fall 2014 is 22.79, or 684 WSCH/FTEF (525 is considered satisfactory) Only seven disciplines in the entire college had higher productivity values in Fall 2014.
Astronomy is a gateway. A Gateway to Science: The astronomy program at MJC, with all of it s attributes such as the observatory and planetarium, provides an attractive gateway into the sciences for students. Students who take astronomy courses often get hooked and end up as STEM majors. A Gateway to MJC: In addition, the astronomy program is one of the flagships of MJC s role as a leader in local educational outreach to our community. Young students (potential future MJC students) will flock to our campus to experience these learning opportunities. As such, the MJC astronomy program puts MJC on the map for students as an attractive option for college.
Astronomy is in need. 2009: Bill Luebke retired At the time, demand is high, fill rates are strong, Astronomy Club thriving 2014: Planetarium completed Observatory completed Class set of telescopes purchased SCC completed with solar system model and Foucault Pendulum But MJC Astronomy Club dwindling Still no full time astronomer to provide leadership for this program and this facility that have so much potential
Astronomy Multi-tasking Faculty Augment astronomy curriculum More offerings of Astro 160 and 151 More advanced course for successful students New courses available to community Faculty professional insight into Great Valley Museum/ Planetarium presentations for elementary schools Astronomy/Physics have same minimum qualifications New course Physical Science 180 Conceptual Physics and Chemistry for Educators designed as core for AA-T in Elementary Education (331 students declared in AA-Univ Prep Liberal Studies, more expected in AA-T, huge community need for educators)
Astronomy - Summary Large demand Gateway to the sciences and associated high-paying careers High productivity Multi-disciplinary faculty Strong community support for astronomy due to Measure E, Planetarium, and Observatory not filling the position is a political problem for the college Hiring an astronomy faculty member as a growth position is an excellent decision and meets the colleges needs
Anatomy/Physiology
Anatomy/Physiology - Overview Essential pre-nursing courses Anatomy 125 Human Anatomy Physiology 101 Human Physiology Biology 116 Human Biology (Prerequisite option for Anatomy) Faculty 4 Full-time (was 5 until 2011) 6 Part-time Premier anatomy/physiology program Five anatomy & physiology labs in SCC versus only three in old building Two cadaver rooms with three cadavers each immense amount of prep work for each, overseen by faculty Students fully prepared for Nursing program Nursing program has extremely high pass rates on Board Exams
Nursing Model Curriculum C-ID website Intersegmental Model Curriculum for Nursing Common requirements for Community College and CSU Nursing programs Over 1600 MJC students working on prerequisites Mandatory courses include Anatomy 125 Physiology students ~ 53+ sections of each Anatomy/Physiology faculty working to resolve unit issues to ensure adoption of Model Curriculum
Anatomy/Physiology Productivity Stacked lectures with separate labs Two to three sections meet together for lecture Separate lab sessions with models and cadaver work for hands-on learning Productivity FTES/FTEF or 581 WSCH/FTEF in Anatomy FTES/FTEF or 610 WSCH/FTEF in Physiology (525 is considered acceptable) Hiring an anatomy/physiology faculty member is a wise investment of the college s instructional faculty funds
Anatomy/Physiology - Demand Among first subjects to fill Students add to waitlist versus enroll in other disciplines High census fill rates Fall % Anatomy 108% Physio As of today 216 waitlisted 15 w.l. per sec Need 9 sections to meet need
Anatomy/Physiology - Summary Large, unmet demand Highly impacted - Bottlenecks for pre-nursing students High productivity Over 1600 students pursuing nursing degrees Hiring an anatomy/physiology faculty member as a growth position is an excellent decision and meets the colleges needs
Mathematics
Mathematics - Overview FTES generation = 1400 FTES 10% of college total last year Over 90 sections each term with many more needed Faculty 17 full-time (was 18 until 2012) will drop to 16 if first math position is not filled 17 part-time Spring 2015 Unmet Demand as of today 1337 students on waitlists for math classes Average over 14 waitlisted per section Need 38 more sections to accommodate all waitlisted students
Mathematics - Overview Approximately 20,000 MJC students All pursuing any degree need to take a math class Most need to take several math classes Basic Skills Courses Math 10 & 20 Pre-Transfer Algebra Math 70, 89 & 90 Transferable General Education Math 101, 105, 106, 111, 130, 134, 138 Precalculus Math 121 & 122 Calculus Math 171, 172 & 173 Differential Equations & Linear Algebra Math 174
Mathematics - Demand Among first subjects to fill Students add to waitlist versus enroll in other disciplines High census fill rates Fall % of capacity in 93 sections Data indicates large unmet demand
Mathematics Productivity No stacked lectures No large lecture classes like other departments Individual sections of 38 capacity. Faculty normally take 5-10 more if seats allow. Over 90 sections each term second largest department in the college Productivity FTES/FTEF or 629 WSCH/FTEF, exceeded by only 12 disciplines at the college, all of which have far fewer sections than mathematics Hiring faculty in mathematics is a wise investment of the college s instructional funds
Two Math Positions Prioritized Tenured math professor resigned in April Missed October retirement deadline for replacement in accordance with Hiring Prioritization Guidelines Filled for with one-year temporary full-time faculty College needs to review and revise Hiring Prioritization Guidelines to avoid this problem in the future Important Observation: Not hiring this position will result in an actual reduction in the number of faculty, sections, and students served, exactly the opposite of what students need Filling this position will not serve any additional students Approving the first mathematics position is essential to not go backward in our number of math courses at the college
Two Math Positions Prioritized Allocating a growth position to mathematics... Increases number of courses by six to eight sections per year, possibly more with overload Meets needs of several hundred students Enables progression through basic skills courses Increases number of transferable courses for students Approving the second mathematics position is essential to move forward in our number of math courses at the college
Mathematics - Summary Large, unmet demand Highly impacted - Bottlenecks for all MJC students High productivity Essential basic skills need for thousands of students Hiring one mathematics faculty member is absolutely critical to keep from going backward in course offerings. Not hiring one mathematics faculty member will result in fewer courses. Hiring a second mathematics faculty member is a vital growth opportunity in order to clear the bottlenecks and allow students to progress through their programs at MJC
Summary of SME Faculty Positions All five requests meet the criteria All have high demand and high productivity Clear bottlenecks for many students in many majors Compounding factor Difficulty of finding and retaining adjuncts Ranked order 1. Chemistry 2. Mathematics Replacement 3. Astronomy 4. Anatomy/Physiology 5. Mathematics true growth
