3 Local Policies and Strategies for Sustainable Transport Mobility Plan for the City of Almada Access 21 (started in 2001) Defines a strategy for the articulation between all transport modes in the City. It establishes new rules for private cars circulation in the City of Almada, restraining car use by giving priority to soft modes, pedestrianising a large part of the city centre. Introduce new pedestrian areas Define a new parking policy to regulate car parking Improve public space Create conditions for cycling Promote modal shift to public transport Promoting Sustainable Mobility on going programmes The new Light Rail Line, currently under construction, brought out the need to redefine the transport offer in the Municipality and served as a springboard for an urban requalification of the city centre. Based on the new light rail network, some structuring projects (cycling policies, etc.) are being developed based on a new transport policy aiming at the modal shift from private cars to public transport.

9 Cycle Plan of Almada Promoting Sustainable Mobility on going programmes This plan will integrate all cycle lanes, existing or planned in several projects, in a true network that can be able to promote cycling for other purposes than leisure. AGENEAL is participating in this project, coordinated by the Municipality, together with a team of landscape architects, that will give preference to the use of green corridors for the implantation of the lanes. Promote the use of the bicycle to work Promote the use of the bicycle to the beaches especially during Summer Integrate all cycle lanes in a network Promote modal shift from the private vehicle for short journeys Promote new mobility schemes (bike and ride)

15 Promoting Sustainable Mobility on going programmes Following the policy defined for the transport sector, the Municipality of Almada is carrying out a series of actions to promote/disseminate sustainable mobility in Almada, with the participation of AGENEAL: Almada, Better without Cars Campaign (SAVE funded project) European Mobility Week/Car Free Day Step-by-Step Project (SAVE funded project) Eco-driving Training (drivers from different associates fleets) Promoting Sustainable Mobility on going programmes Campaign Almada, Better without Cars One day per week (Thursdays), drivers are voluntarily encouraged to leave their cars at home Direct benefits are: special public transport tickets with a reduced price on the campaign day, discounts in cultural and sporting activities and in several shops in Almada
