1 COURSE TITLE: CREATIVE WRITING A - B COURSE NUMBER: 0650 DEPARTMENT: English / Language Arts LENGTH OF COURSE: One or two semesters CREDITS PER SEMESTER: 5 GRADE LEVEL(S): 9-12 REQUIRED OR ELECTIVE: Elective (This course meets the "F" elective requirement for UC/CSU) PREREQUISITES: None BOARD OF EDUCATION ADOPTION: February 26, 2002 COURSE DESCRIPTION Creative Writing is a seminar-style course for students interested in writing. Through whole class instruction, small group work, and individual instruction, students will develop their own voices and styles in writing, and gain skill and confidence in utilizing a writing process in a variety of genre. Students will read a variety of literary selections to use as models and stimuli for writing. (This course is aligned with the MDUSD Language Arts Content Standards.) COURSE OUTLINE 1. MAJOR GOALS 1.1 To develop a sense of voice and style (Grade 9 Writing Applications, 2.1, 2.2) 1.2 To contribute to a publication of student work (Grade 9 Writing Strategies, 1.6) 1.3 To develop understanding of a variety of literary styles and genre (Grade 9 Writing Applications, 2.1, 2.2) 1.4 To develop discernment and discrimination in taste (Grade 9 Writing Strategies, 1.6) 1.5 To respect and nourish the imaginative and creative strengths of oneself and others (Grade 9 Speaking Applications, 2.1, 2.3, 2.4; Grade 12 Speaking Applications, 2.3) 1.6 To develop critical thinking skills (Grade 9 Literary Response and Analysis, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 and 3.7) 1.7 To explore creative processes (Grade 9 Writing Strategies, 1.6; Grade 12 Speaking Applications, 2.3) Page 1 of 5
