2 WINE INTERNATIONAL C OMPETITION Welcome to the best wines in the West this year. If it seems like the range of wines on shop shelves is getting more and more confusing, there s a good reason. New wineries are popping up at a brisk rate: The U.S. has well over 7,000 now, and many of them produce more than one label. Imports, too, are crowding in. So how do you separate the good from the bad and the ugly, and pick a tasty bottle? Look to the Sunset International Wine Competition to help you out. In our second year, our group of judges some of the most experienced wine tasters in the West (see page 2) rated almost 3,000 wines, to award medals to the best. How we judged Each wine was tasted blind by a panel of three judges. The panelists discussed the wines but scored them individually. We awarded medals based on a wine s average score. The highest-scoring wine in each category won Best in Class, unless that wine did not score in Gold Medal territory. New World wines (from outside Europe, including Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and Chile, etc.) were tasted in flights by varietal. Old World wines (from France, Italy, Spain, and Germay) were tasted by region. OUR guide to the best We ve listed all our medal winners here, color coded by type of medal. Each Gold wine has a brief tasting note included, to let you know what the judges loved about it (they didn t give out Golds lightly). Sponsored label ads, where included, didn t influence judging or results. Use this list to take the risk out of trying new wines. Vetted by the best judges in the West, these are bottles sure to please. Happy sipping!
