Question 6: What is your role at MSJC? Full-time Faculty Part-time Faculty Classified/Staff Administrator 27.5% % % % 2 72% of the survey responses are by full-time & part-time faculty. Classified and administration makes up 28% of the responses. Question 7: Do you have any additional comments or areas of concern related to professional development? Number Response Date Response Text 1 May 11, :35 PM I am a CTE faculty member, and the kind of professional development that I need most, is 'continuing education' in my discipline. Why aren't there any 'professional development' categories that will help the faculty remain current in the field of study? 2 May 10, :04 AM My degree is in organizational management and I'd love to coteach a seminar on this. 3 May 9, :55 AM Not at this moment 4 May 8, :57 PM I want PhotoShop again :)
4 5 May 8, :03 PM No 6 May 8, :00 PM adjuncts should be required to participate 7 May 8, :36 PM I would like to learn how to use blackboard 8 May 8, :13 AM I would suggest that one topic should be presented in one day instead of dividing it throughout 3 mornings or afternoons. 9 May 7, :04 PM the people who need workshops will not attend; will these be mandatory. 10 May 7, :40 PM I would participate in both face to face and webinar trainings. Is it correct to number preferences in reverse order with 1 being the least and 11 being the best? 11 May 7, :27 AM No. 12 Apr 30, :58 AM I never mind repeating technology workshops. Adjuncts are too busy to implement everything immediately! 13 Apr 30, :01 AM Hire more full-time faculty. I know, I know, this isn't a topic for professional development, but it is a core issue as to what is inherently wrong with community colleges today. 14 Apr 28, :49 PM Teaching and guiding students to discover the joy of a wellrounded education is what we do. Anything that enhances that process is good for all concerned. 15 Apr 24, :54 PM No 16 Apr 24, :43 PM There was no "all day" choice for attendance. I find it helpful to immerse myself in the learning for a prolonged period of time rather that break it up into short session during which the coverage is superficial at best. 17 Apr 24, :26 PM It's always good to see that professional development is measured in different ways, and the faculty is asked for input. Thanks for the opportunity. 18 Apr 24, :23 AM I often attend some of the MSJC Academy workshops, but feel everyone would be better served if the Academy were scheduled at the end of each semester, rather than right before a semester starts (that way, we would have time to incorporate more of what we learn). 19 Apr 24, :00 AM The same thing for everyone doesn't work, as many of our departments have at least some people not involved in classroom teaching. 20 Apr 23, :40 PM It s nice to see that this is going to happen. 21 Apr 23, :15 PM There appears to be an increasing number of students on campus with mental illness who display disconcerting, inappropriate and sometimes aggressive behavior in the classroom. Part time and full time faculty do not feel prepared to handle these situations and have begun to feel uncomfortable and unsafe. There are no emergency panic buttons to contact security in classrooms on the SJC. There are no video cameras outside of classrooms. When multiple students with undiagnosed or diagnosed illnesses such as Narcolepsy, Bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, and personality disorder, or have drug or alcohol addictions and are in a classroom with students with special needs, students who are pregnant and students who are in various stages of severe illness such as cancer, the learning environment is very much compromised. Faculty need a system in place for emergency situations, education on how to maintain a positive learning environment with multiple angry, sick and irrational students in a class. This is a growing problem that has not been adequately addressed and needs to be. 22 Apr 23, :38 AM It's more convenient to offer professional development activities early in the semester (in the first two to four weeks).
5 23 Apr 23, :40 AM I think it would be interesting if students from different departments could work together on an interdisciplinary project. For instance, last year, the Recycled Art & Fashion Show was about Paris. I was not teaching at MSJC at that time, but it would have been such a great experience for all of us to have a bigger project, outside the walls of our classroom in order to show that the studied subjects interact at some point soon or later as a whole experience in college or in life. 24 Apr 23, :37 AM I love getting my Flex hours here with my peers!!!!!!!!!!!!! 25 Apr 23, :35 AM I could not get the number for ranking to register...just kept ranking numerically 26 Apr 23, :07 AM I would like to see a workshop for keyboarding instructors to learn more on how to use the GDP 11 Web-based keyboarding Program (For instance, the gradebook portion). 27 Apr 22, :23 PM The flex system should be automated for more efficiency and faster pay. 28 Apr 22, :41 PM --I wish I could have selected more than one possible answer to #1 & #2 above 29 Apr 22, :35 PM My preferred professional development topic was not included, but I think it the most essential one on a campus and that is academic knowledge. The coolest and most rewarding experiences I have had here are when I have learned things from my colleagues or visiting experts, either in my field or related fields. To me, that is real professional development. 30 Apr 22, :10 PM Extend the deadline for Flex activities to be submitted. They should be allowed to be submitted at any time during the semester. For part-time faculty, there are some FLEX activities that are not even announced until after the deadline passed (i.e. this semester's Wellness Hike). 31 Apr 22, :04 PM Thanks for working so hard on getting this going!! 32 Apr 22, :13 PM We need more professional development activities at various times. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend several of them because they were offered during my teaching hours. 33 Apr 22, :44 PM no 34 Apr 22, :34 PM It would be nice to have courses on how to create innovative classroom activities that get students involved, how to create a syllabus/rubric/etc for new instructors, and how to create effective online assignments 35 Apr 22, :44 PM My schedule only permits online activities. 36 Apr 22, :41 PM The best professional development for me has occurred in my field off campus. The college has made a great effort in professional development at our college especially in technology. 37 Apr 22, :38 PM The MSJC Academy does an excellent job, and we are so, so, so lucky to have this opportunity.
6 38 Apr 22, :56 PM For question 5 (On which campus do you primarily work) I selected MVC but I am a completely remote part-time faculty member. "Remote" should have been an option. As a fully remote faculty member, PD is rarely open to me. Also, I'd like to express concern about MSJC not providing conference travel funds for part-time faculty. I sent an to my department chair and division dean and neither replied to my inquiry. This past year, I published a book chapter under the institutional affiliation of MSJC, served as conference chair-elect for the Sloan-C International Symposium for Emerging Technologies in Online Learning, and held a seat on the international advisory board for the Horizon Report as an MSJC faculty member. I have paid for conferences out of pocket and these roles I have held (and continue to hold) provide significant exposure for MSJC. 39 Apr 22, :53 PM I really like the academies, so I wouldn't want those to change. I would like to have some follow up sessions during college hour on a session at the academy, so we could have some sustained dialogue on certain topics. 40 Apr 22, :46 PM It should be more than one day a year. We should strive for continuous ongoing improvement. 41 Apr 22, :39 PM i HAVE NEVER BEEN OFFERED AN OPPORTUNITY FOR INDIVIDUAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND MY DEPARTMENT CONSTANTLY ACUSES ME OF HAVE INTERPERSONAL SKILLS ISSUES 42 Apr 22, :37 PM In question #3 there are 11 topics listed, however, social events/team building are not in the 1-10 rankings. I would have ranked this #9 or 8 43 Apr 22, :34 PM We ranked in the inverse order. Oh well. 44 Apr 22, :33 PM Follow-through :) 45 Apr 22, :31 PM N/A 46 Apr 22, :29 PM Workshop Possibilities: How to serve on a screening and interview panel & How to ensure equity in all you do 47 Apr 22, :24 PM I would like to see college themes. Meaning something like water. Each class or a large number of classes could incorporate water as a topic 48 Apr 22, :24 PM Financial aid reaching students much earlier so that they have books when school starts. 49 Apr 22, :24 PM No 50 Apr 22, :16 PM I believe the Teaching and Learning Academy serves us best when it is held separately from the Fall and Winter Tech Academies. I would like to see it offered at least in the fall of each year. I would also like to see it held off-campus.
