Ohlone College Program Review Report Program Description and Scope: o Program Review Title: Photography o Academic year: 2015/2016 o Review Type: Instructional Disciplines o Program/Departments: Photography (10003) o Authority Code: 45-Dean, Arts and Social Sciences o External Regulations: Yes No X o Provide a brief narrative that describes the instructional program/discipline: The photography program offers a variety of courses to students with the goals of: introducing them to current, and relevant historic, practices in photographic image-making; exposing them to current and past photographic theories; providing them with a foundational knowledge of historical events and issues; and helping them grow as artists and critical thinkers as make progress on their personal artistic trajectories. College Mission: o Mission Statement: Ohlone College responds to the educational needs of our diverse community and economy by offering high quality instruction supporting basic skills, career development, university transfer, and personal enrichment and by awarding associate degrees and certificates to eligible students in an innovative, multicultural environment where successful learning and achievement are highly valued, supported, and continually assessed. o Program Relation to College Mission: Basic Skill Careeer Entry (CTE) University Transfer Personal Enrichment o State Your Program Mission/Purpose: The mission and purpose of the Photography Program is to intersect with the Mission of Ohlone College by providing a key component to the skills and disciplines available to our students through the rich medium of photographic image making and communication. The photography instruction offered provides: basic skills needed to succeed in both academic and professional settings; career entry and advancement skills for a variety of fields in which visual literary and fluency is an advantage; university transfer courses; and personal enrichment for both tranfer-minded students and life-long learners.
o Briefly Describe Program Accomplishments: We offer a well-rounded series of relevant up-to-date courses. We reach out to underserved populations by keeping our costs as low as possible. We have used our available funds to purchase cameras and other photo equipment which we allow students to use free of cost. We continue to revise and update our distance learning spaces. The BlackBoard system is not tailor-made to the type of content we provide but I'm proud to have innovated the space in unique ways to serve our students. We pay ongoing attention to ensure our equipment is up-to-date and that we have the equipment we need to instruct students in a wide variety of relevant photo practices. We recently acquired studio lighting equipment and are now able to teach this valuable skill. We recently enhanced the program by hiring a much-needed, albeit part-time, lab manager. This has allowed our instructors to spend more of their time on course development and instruction as opposed to lab management. Achievement and Resource Data Analysis: 1. Be able to create images in a traditional darkroom and on the computer. Complete an extended photographic project. Have the skills to use both film-based and digital cameras. 3. Analyze and summarize your assessment findings â?? What in the data jumped out? Students complete projects prompted by instructor guidelines throughout the semster as well as culminating portfolios which demonstrate their progression. Although this is more anectdotal than data-based, it's been my expereince that students continue to excel in this area and consistently score high in my evaluations of their work. I'd like to include here an I recently received from a former student to give some idea of our standards for extended projects and their evaluation. This form limits the number of characters to 2000 so please read the below in the comment section. 4. Give examples of assessments used for your PSLO analysis: Final Portfolio (ART133, ART138, ART139) Midterm and Final Papers (ART131) 5. Describe input from Program Advisory Committee (if applicable):
6. Comments: "While 2013 was my most stressful year at Ohlone, it was also my most rewarding. Since then I've transferred to the school I was accumulating credits to transfer for - Academy of Art University. I'm here now in my second semester, studying Photography & hopefully later specializing in Photojournalism. My first semester at this new school was quite magical, & I couldn't help but think back to a lot of the assignments you had us do, as well as the photographers you had us emulate, in Fall "Once I got to AAU, I finally understood your love for all of the classic black & white greats you projected for us in class. I also really appreciated the two books you had me check out to help inspire me, especially Girl Culture. "In my PH100 class at AAU I was able to incorporate the on-going project I had started for Intermediate Photography assignment [at Ohlone] with me covering my swim team. "The set (it was also our midterm) was received very well by my professor & our peers during our critique. It was quite amazing that I was able to incorporate my black & white prints from your class with my [new] color prints. "I just wanted to fill you in and thank you for helping me get this far at my dream school. In the moment, I thought you were quite harsh for critiquing the edges of my frames, but now my classmates and professors are quite astonished at how well I crop things in-camera - before I even get into Lightroom. You helped me see things a whole lot differently, and I wouldn't be here succeeding as well as I am if it wasn't for you - I'm currently on the President's List with a 4.0 & I'm hoping to submit some of my work for the Spring Show." - Mica Program Improvement Objectives 1. Based on the program data analysis and PSLO analysis, identify your Program Improvement Objective(s): What are you going to do? Why are you going to do it? This PIO address equipment needs in three areas. See note below. Notes (optional): Please include any notes related to your PIO. (2500 Character limit) This PIO address equipment needs in three areas. 1. The major course revisions to ART133 require the purchase of digital cameras, printers, scanners, computers
and other equipment. 2. The purchases outlined will also help to update aging equipment already in use. 3. All equipment purchased in time to teach the new ART133 in the Fremont Portable will also be put to use in the Academic Core building once we move. Additionally, much of this equipment request (specifically, cameras) is in keeping with our commitment (started years ago) to make classes accessible to low-income students. Program PIO will address the following: Awareness of, and sensitivity to, diverse cultures and perspectives. Institutional Effectiveness Career Technical Education (CTE) Related Student Learning & Achievement Course Retention Course Completion Persistence Success Rates Increase Program Enrollments Increase Degrees/Certifications Equity/Disproportionate Representation Access to high quality courses - community needs Use human, fiscal, technological, and physical resources responsibly, How will you assess the effectiveness of your PIO: If the request is approved, the equipment will be put to use. PIO Action Plan: How will you accomplish this? At his request, I've provided Dean Birkedahl with an itemized list of our needs. What is your timeline? I'm hoping to teach the new ART133 starting in Fall In order to prepare, I'd like to have these funds in Spring Who is going to do this?
PIO Status: New Closing the loop - Describe the results of your PIO implementation or completion: Conclusion: Complete if PIO has been completed Fiscal Resources Status: PIO Resources: 2. Based on the program data analysis and PSLO analysis, identify your Program Improvement Objective(s): What are you going to do? Why are you going to do it? Increase the Lab Manager position from one day per week to full time to enhance the learning environment. Notes (optional): Please include any notes related to your PIO. (2500 Character limit) In fall 2014 we were able to hire our first lab manager which was good news. The benefits have been clear; the work he does allows our instructors to concentrate on teaching. However, one day a week is not enough. All other programs in the Bay Area (and beyond) employ a full-time lab manager. Having this position filled is a key component for our growth. This PIO is related to the PIO concerning open lab hours. Program PIO will address the following: Student Learning & Achievement Success Rates Service Impacts How will you assess the effectiveness of your PIO: The measure of success will be an increase in the hours allotted for our lab manager. We should see an increase in student/instructor interaction. Finally, student assessments should show greater student achievement.
PIO Action Plan: How will you accomplish this? By working with Dean Birkedahl and Vice President Stagnaro. What is your timeline? 1-2 years Who is going to do this? Paul Mueller PIO Status: New In-Progress Closing the loop - Describe the results of your PIO implementation or completion: Conclusion: Complete if PIO has been completed Fiscal Resources Status: Staff position requested: Photo Lab Manager not funded as of 6/22/15. PIO Resources: Resource: Staff/Administrative Position Position Title: Photo Lab Manager FTE: Full-time (could get their incrementally over time) Est. Cost: $40, Based on the program data analysis and PSLO analysis, identify your Program Improvement Objective(s): What are you going to do? Why are you going to do
it? Add new classes to reflect current cultural and economic trends. Notes (optional): Please include any notes related to your PIO. (2500 Character limit) Photography and visual fluency are increasing in importance in our culture and economy. In my opinion our program offerings are too limited and do not reflect this trend. Our current classes provide a foundation in basic photographic skills. Our series? provide students the opportunity to improve their mastery of these foundational skills. We should also offer classes designed to expand the students? repertoire of skills into areas such as advanced lighting, alternative processes, and documentary skills, to name a few. By doing so we?ll better prepare our transfer students to succeed at schools that expect a high level of readiness. This is true for UC and CSU but it?s particularly the case for schools like the Art Academy of San Francisco and the San Francisco Art Institute? two coveted destinations for our students. I'd like to see Ohlone College occupy a leading role in photographic education for the Bay Area. Program PIO will address the following: Student Learning & Achievement Increase Program Enrollments Increase Degrees/Certifications How will you assess the effectiveness of your PIO: The measure of success will be to add new courses and fill them. Portfolios will be assessed in the new classes for knowledge and skills beyond what is learned in the basic classes. PIO Action Plan: How will you accomplish this? By working with the curriculum committee, Dean Birkedahl, and appropriate Ohlone Administration. What is your timeline?
1-2 years. Who is going to do this? Paul Mueller PIO Status: In-Progress Closing the loop - Describe the results of your PIO implementation or completion: Conclusion: Complete if PIO has been completed Fiscal Resources Status: No fiscal resources needed PIO Resources: Resource: People Time Description: Paul Mueller develops new classes, which are added to the class schedule as appropriate. 4. Based on the program data analysis and PSLO analysis, identify your Program Improvement Objective(s): What are you going to do? Why are you going to do it? Offer generous open lab time outside of class time for enrolled students. This is a huge area in which we need to do better for our students and their success. We currently offer a meager three hours per week of open lab during only one semester each year. Compared to other schools this is an embarrassment. Students need time to practice their craft; it's a key component to success and one we're obligated to provide. Notes (optional): Please include any notes related to your PIO. (2500 Character
limit) Program PIO will address the following: Student Learning & Achievement Course Retention Course Completion Persistence Success Rates Increase Program Enrollments How will you assess the effectiveness of your PIO: Once we add this component to our program we should see an increase in our students' skills and in the quality of their work. As students are given the space to improve their skills I suspect to see an increase in enrollment as students share their positive experience with friends. PIO Action Plan: How will you accomplish this? By working with Dean Birkedahl and Vice President Stagnaro. This PIO is linked to my request for increased hours for out lab manager. Student workers might also be a component to this PIO. What is your timeline? 1 year Who is going to do this? Paul Mueller PIO Status: New In-Progress
Closing the loop - Describe the results of your PIO implementation or completion: Conclusion: Complete if PIO has been completed Fiscal Resources Status: No increased funding for This will be requested for the FY additional $ PIO Resources: Resource: People Time Description: Workers for open lab. Increased lab manager hours can be a component. Resource: Staff/Administrative Position Position Title: Hourly lab supervisors FTE: Less than full-time. 5. Based on the program data analysis and PSLO analysis, identify your Program Improvement Objective(s): What are you going to do? Why are you going to do it? Beginning planning stages for Community Education offerings. Notes (optional): Please include any notes related to your PIO. (2500 Character limit) Once the academic core is complete we'll have one of best facilities in the Bay Area. Offering Community Ed courses will increase our visibility. Considering that the new construction is being funded through a bond measure I think it's important to offer this to the community. I also suspect one benefit to increased visibility will be an increase in enrollment in our credit courses. Program PIO will address the following: Increase Program Enrollments Equity/Disproportionate Representation Service Impacts
How will you assess the effectiveness of your PIO: The measure of success will be the launching of the program. PIO Action Plan: How will you accomplish this? By working with Chris Warden and Kate Giuffra, who have initiated similar community ed program in their areas and with the appropriate administrators. What is your timeline? 4-5 years. Who is going to do this? Paul Mueller PIO Status: New In-Progress Closing the loop - Describe the results of your PIO implementation or completion: Conclusion: Complete if PIO has been completed Fiscal Resources Status: No fiscal resources requested.
