1 Program Review Title: Program Code: Review Type: Type: Chaffey College Program Review Report Nursing Assistant and Home Health Care NURSING: CNA Instructional SLO's Overview of Chaffey College Program: Describe the program mission as it relates to the college mission: The Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aide Programs improve the lives of students by providing quality, accessible and student-centered education to the diverse communities they serve, thus providing safe and competent certified nurse assistants and home health aides to the community. The mission of the Nursing Assistant Program within the Career Ladder is to introduce the student to, and empower the student to navigate in the healthcare and academic settings. This will allow them to work and gain experience while they complete their academic goals. In the program, the Nursing Assistant student will attain basic skills necessary to pass the State competency test for Nursing Assistants in the State of California. In addition, the students will learn professionalism, soft skills, interviewing techniques, resume writing, basic computer skills and job searching, which greatly enhance not only the marketability of these students, but the skills necessary to keep them in the positions for which they are hired. Responses to Prior Year PSR Prior Year's Recommendations and recommendation Commendations: Taking the suggestion to participate during flex to improve computer skills. Using the Success Center to administer a reading test to identify students who may not have the appropriate reading and/or English skills. Having survived the 5th move of the program. Recommendations: None Program Changes: None State how program/service addressed these recommendations Thank you for the commendations. New Activities and Outcomes 1. Nursing Assistant and Home Health Care 1. Identify 3-5 learning outcome for each program in this discipline(add one at a time): Pass the State certification exam in the 80 percentile. Provide an assessment statement for one outcome for each program articulating the following (means of assessment, population to be assessed, point of assessment, and criteria for assessment): Students will take the State Certification Exam. What were the results of the assessment for the outcome. If no data has yet been collected, please describe the plans for assessment:
2 This will be evidenced by the State certificate pass rate for the College. Describe the response to the assessment results for the learning outcome (noting whether or not the assessment satisfactorily confirmed the outcome or indicating what instructional modifications will to be made for improvement) If no data is yet available, then this section does not apply: 2. Perform basic nursing and personal care skills for residents from diverse and multicultural backgrounds. Students will be assess in a simulation lab by faculty and then reassessed in the clinical setting by the faculty. 3. Promote resident s rights and independence. Students will be provided and quizzed on the right of resident's then apply those concepts to clinical facilty to be assessed by faculty observation. 4. Communicate effectively with residents, families and members of the health care team. Students will participate in roll-playing in laboratory work and then observed during the clinical rotation by faculty member. 5. Use critical thinking as a basis for effective clinical decision making. Students will begin the critical thinking process in the laboratory setting and continue progress to a higher level in the clinical setting as observed by the faculty member. Requests General Supplies Category: Item Desc: Multimedia Updates Price: 3000 Quantity: 1 Total Cost: 3000 Approve For Purchase: No Purchased: No Remarks Media catalog has not been updated since 1998 and has been in heavy rotation so they have become severly compromised (worn). Because this program is not at the Rancho campus, the students have difficulty accessing the HS media lab. New and updated materials have been listed on student evaluations of faculty members as a place to have a voice.
3 Previous Activities and Outcomes 1. Activity: SLO's will be written for all courses and programs. Faculty will continue to attend in- services, workshops, and seminars on learner-based instruction, as well as new instructional styles. Outcome: Faculty will have increased knowledge and skill in teaching based on student learning outcomes. Students will pass the state CNA certification exam. Fully Student success rate on the State CNA certification exam is 100%. Faculty have attended seminars on learning based outcomes. 2. Activity: The success center administers a reading test one week prior to the beginning of classes in order to identify students at risk. A new endeavor will be explored, which is to invite ESL staff to the classes and present services they offer and answer questions. Outcome: It is theorized that by having the ESL staff come to the class, the number of students who attend these classes will increase, which will in turn increase the succes rate for ESL students. This will hopefully also positively impact retention and success rates. Faculty continue to work with the ESL center. 3. Activity: Relationships will be maintained with existing clinical facilities in use by the NA and HHA programs. In addition, new clinical sites will be contacted for partnership. Outcome: Positive clinical relationships provide quality experiences for the students. In turn, the clinical facilities hire students from the programs to fill their staffing needs. Fully Interviews with all clinical facilities have been positive. 4. Activity: Continue to have students complete a web-based series of surveys to critique the clinical sites, courses, instructors, and materials. Obtain American Red Cross pass rates of the students. Outcome: Statistics can be complied which will lead changes in the program. The current American Red Cross pass rate for the NA program is 98.2%. Not at all Due to the organization re-structuring and relocation to Fontana Workforce Prep Center, this will be adressed next year. 5. Activity: Student Learning Outcomes will be developed for each NA and HHA course and both programs/certificates. Outcome: Outcomes will be measurable and a method will be in place to assess, evaluate, and improve the classes The end result is graduating safe and competent health care workers to assist in the healthcare crisis. Faculty are continuing to work on SLO's. 6. Activity: This year, articulation agreements were made between Chaffey College's NA program and Baldyview ROP and San Bernardino ROP NA programs. The effort to articulate with secondary schools will continue to be a focus this year. Outcome: Articulation between high school and ROP programs with Chaffey NA will allow the student to come directly into the career ladder at the Acute Care Technician step (provided they have earned a high school diploma).
4 Not at all Not applicable at this time. 7. Activity: The NA program moved for the fifth time in 3 years. it is now located at a new Fontana site which is shared with the Workforce Development department. There are two new skills labs and a classroom for the nursing assistants. Outcome: The NA/HHA programs will be taught all at one site for a period of time predicted to be not less than six years. Students will take all NA classes at the same facility rather than several campuses. This has pro's and con's. Having all of the instructional supplies and staff members at the same facility provides consistency and stability to the program. The negative aspect of housing the program in one site, is that it may affect enrollment from other area's that would have attened the Rancho Campus, but will not be able to make it to the FNWP. Many of the students are transportation challenged. The facility is not condusive for student centered learning for an at-risk population. 8. Activity: A blackboard site for NA's will be created. Outcome: Students will have more experience with computer systems and be more prepared in technology as they move up the career ladder. With the challenges at the FWPC site, this issue will be addressed at a future date. Externally Imposed Regulation: 1. Organization: Department of Health Services, State of California Last Review: 07/21/1998 Recommendations: No recommendations were made. Full approval to operate was given in April Budgetary recommendations: None Addressed Satisfactorily: Yes Status of Recommendation: Next Review: 04/01/2007 Awards Data Nursing CNA/HHA (L235) Term Degrees Certificates 2002/FA /SP /SU /SP 0 1 Comments: Students must be encouraged to apply for the certificate upon graduation in the future. Many think it was automatic. Budget If any unexpended funds in last years budget, please briefly explain why these funds were not spent. Yes (hourly workers) had $ left. Program reduced its offerings to accommodate State regulations on fingerprinting. Subsequently the hourly workers were not utilized fully (office supplies) had $ left. Due to program reduction (like above) Were any additional funds requested (VTEA, other grants, etc.)? If so, please list source of additional funds and amount received.
