Overview of ARRB Road Safety Research ARRB transforms research into practice. In the area of safety: Reports and guidelines of best practice Road safety tools (ANRAM, RSRM, etc) Extensive road safety risk assessment research has been conducted in Australia over the last decade Engineering based solutions Develop robust information in guides / manuals Most recent interest relates to Safe System implementation Focus is on evidence-based outcomes 6
Infrastructure and crash severity Much theorising, but little hard data Swedish multi-factor study (roads, vehicles and road users) based on in-depth crash investigations Higher percentage of severe crashes occurred on lower standard roads (less than 4-star Euro-RAP, and excluding motorways) Possible permanent injury (including soft tissue injury) 45% Moderate injury 59% Fatality 79% 7
One life lost on our roads is too many 8
Safe System approach The Safe System approach starts from the ethical position that no one should die or be seriously injured on the road It recognises that humans make mistakes and are vulnerable, and is therefore based on human tolerance to likely collisions A system approach roads, vehicles, people, speed interacting 50 9
Risk Assessment 10
Australian National Risk Assessment Model Combines crash-based and risk based approaches A tool to identify the risk of severe crashes on road network An analysis tool to understand the sources of those risks A decision support tool to develop road improvement programs addressing those risk 11
Safe System - ARRB Safe System is a major challenge for road agencies ARRB helps road agencies to work out how to progress towards Safe System objectives Workshops on implications for Infrastructure, Speed Management, Road Users and Local Government Safe System principles referenced throughout guides, training and other materials Built into risk assessment models 12
ARRB in Action Internationally 13
ARRB in Action Internationally Increase awareness Translate awareness into tangible actions Sustain local and regional capability Strategic capacity building Equip people with skills and tools to become road safety actors and partners 14
