1 APPENDIX F VIBRATION TESTING PROCEDURE
2 Appendix F SPS-F-1 of 14 VIBRATION PERFORMANCE TESTING I. General Perform a vibration analysis on all motor driven equipment listed below after it is installed and ready to run. All final vibration readings used for acceptance will be taken with the machinery under operating/loaded conditions. The analysis is to be performed by qualified technicians and whose credentials are approved in advance by the County. An authorized representative of the County shall also witness the testing. All vibration tolerances listed in Section IV of this specification shall not be exceeded over the full operating range of the equipment, including variable speed driven equipment. Measurement of overall lateral vibrations (i.e. vibrations acting side-to-side, up and down or axially) are 0 that is required in the field. Field acceptance vibration analysis should also confirm that natural frequencies of drivetrains, motor bases, pump bases, steady bearing supports and beams have been properly avoided throughout the operating range of the equipment per design. If the following requirements are met during design and installation prior to operation, the equipment can be expected to run with a minimum of vibration and wear and should meet (and likely be well within) the tolerances set forth in this standard: 1) Pumps properly selected for the range of hydraulic conditions expected and power transmission equipment (gear boxes, couplings, etc.) properly selected for the service conditions expected. 2) Rotor assemblies statically and dynamically balanced. 3) Equipment bases for pumps, motors, etc. installed level in both directions and in a rigid manner. 4) Particular care taken that areas in the hold down bolts are flat and level and "soft foot" conditions are avoided. 5) Piping strains on equipment casings minimized during installation. 6) Proper shaft alignments on coupled equipment checked and corrected as installed on-site. II. Equipment to be tested - Equipment to be tested shall include, but is not limited to: 1) Motors Pumps (except): Wet pit submersibles 2) Pump end of vertical turbine pumps Published: 01/01 Revised: CHART NO. 2
3 Appendix F SPS-F-2 of 14 3) Blowers 4) Compressors (centrifugal, rotary & reciprocating) 5) Gear boxes/gear reducers 6) Fans (5 HP and over) 7) Machine supports, piping, etc. (as found necessary) III. Methods For Taking Vibration Readings A. Vibration readings shall be taken with test equipment that is capable of complete discrete frequency analysis and will produce an "x-y" frequency vs. amplitude plot or spectrum in printed form. The equipment shall also be capable of providing a complete broadband unfiltered reading or overall reading in addition to the aforementioned individual frequency components. B. The sensor/pickup shall be of the seismic type (i.e. accelerometer or velocity pickup). C. Vibration velocity readings in inches/second vs. frequency shall be used. Both filtered and unfiltered readings shall be provided. D. Vibration Readings will be taken as follows: 1) Equipment with integral shaft for driver and driven unit readings shall be taken at positions shown on Drawing No. I at the end of this section. 2) Coupled equipment with separate bearings for driver and driven unit shall have readings taken at positions shown on Drawing No. 2 at the end of this section. 3) Readings for dry-pit submersible sewage pump installations shall be taken as shown on Drawing No. 4 at the end of this section. 4) Readings for horizontally mounted equipment shall be taken at measurement points shown on Drawing No. 5 at the end of this section. 5) Readings for vertical turbine deep-well type pumps shall be taken at measurement positions as shown on Drawing No. 6 at the end of this section. 6) Readings for vertical or right-angle gear driven equipment shall be taken at measurement positions shown on Drawing No. 7 at the end of this section. 7) Readings for belt-driven equipment shall be taken at measurement positions shown on Drawing No. 8 at the end of this section. Published: 01/01 Revised: CHART NO. 2
4 Appendix F SPS-F-3 of 14 When coupled or belt-driven equipment is running and operating under load, record vibration readings. If the equipment fails to meet vibration tolerances in accordance with Part IV of his section, record vibration readings on the driver unit disconnected from the driven equipment. Use this record to compare with the vibration of the complete unit to determine the source of the problem. IV. Vibration Standards/Tolerances Except as noted below, all equipment shall be within the "acceptable" range of the Vibration Severity Chart No. 1 at the end of this section. Tolerances shall apply to filtered readings. Curves A, B and C on the chart represent constant velocity lines in inches per second peak. A. Pumps (Special Requirements) - See Vibration Severity Chart No Installations where motor is mounted vertically (piggyback) on pump and horizontally mounted units connected by a flexible coupling (see Drawings No. 2 and No. 5 at the end of this section): a. Motor when tested uncoupled from pump in accordance with Section III-B.2 and III-E shall meet Curve C vibration tolerance. b. Motor connected to pump under operating conditions shall meet Curve B vibration tolerance. 2. Vertical-turbine/deep-well pump (see Drawing No. 6 at the end of this section) shall meet Curve B with motor coupled to pump and Curve C with motor uncoupled from pump. B. Reciprocating Compressors - Driver shall meet Curve C uncoupled from compressor and Curve A when coupled to compressor. V. Documentation A. Copies of a vibration report shall be provided 1) outlining procedures used; 2) vibration standard used for equipment; 3) analysis results - pass/fail; and Source of any unacceptable vibration found (rotor unbalance, shaft misalignment, hydraulic vibration, etc.) Recommend actions to correct or reduce vibration to acceptable levels. B. Vibration analysis signatures (x-y plots) shall also be provided for each piece of equipment tested. Published: 01/01 Revised: CHART NO. 2
