13 Take Aways for Top 5 DE Programs Schools with low enrollment and/or large numbers of low socio-economic students, like Lee and Ribault would not have made the Top 5 List without the Early College Program The district s ability to understand trends and implement new programs affords underserved populations access to courses not offered at their schools 13

16 Programmatic Challenges Need to increase participation for traditionally underrepresented students and African-American males Eligibility requirements Persistent mindsets regarding who should be eligible and/or informed Schools with few or no teachers able to be credentialed District policies that prevented students from leaving school during the school day State/District budget shortfall affecting state textbook allocation; reducing district/individual school budgets 16

17 Meeting the Challenges Implemented Early College Programs in challenged schools FSCJ and DCPS partnered to offer Pilot program: waive eligibility requirements for SLS juniors and seniors has increased college-going culture Quadrant Meetings - School Staff; Community Events Community/Parents/Students to increase awareness of all accelerated mechanisms Relaxed district policies allowing students to take college courses at FSCJ or UNF during school day Implemented course limits model; asked sustained Early College Programs to provide funding for books 17
