Abstract The objective of the current study was to develop an indigenous scale for the assessment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in Pakistan. The research was conducted in different phases which aimed to generate symptoms, examine factor structure, and establish reliability of the scale. Item-generation was based on symptoms elicited through interviews of clinical psychologists and patients diagnosed with OCD. In second phase inter-rater reliability for the relevance and readability of symptoms was estimated. Third phase examined psychometric properties including factor structure and reliability of the scale. It was administered on two hundred patients diagnosed with OCD. Two separate sets of Principal Component Analyses (PCA) using varimax rotation resulted in 5 categories of symptoms for obsessive and compulsive symptoms each. Internal consistency of the subscales was satisfactory. The construction and development of scale has important implications from clinical as well as research point of view. Keywords: Obsessive symptoms, compulsive symptoms, principal component analysis, reliability Title Perceived Stress, Academic workload and Coping Strategies used by University Students Author Kausar, R. 10 Volume 20 Pages Publication Website link/journal Abstract Journal of Behavioural Sciences The present study aimed to examine perceived stress, academic workloads, and coping strategies used by the students studying under the semester system. It was hypothesized that: there is a positive relationship between academic workload and perceived stress among students; academic workload and perceived stress would predict the type of coping strategies used by the students. The sample included 150 masters level science students. Perceived stress scale, a self designed academic workload scale and coping strategies questionnaire (CSQ, Kausar, 2005) were used for assessment. Students completed assessment measures in the presence of researcher. Correlation and regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Positive relationship was found between academic workloads and perceived stress. Academic workload showed positive relationship with active practical coping strategies and negative relationship with active distractive and avoidance coping. Perceived stress had negative relationship with practical coping and negative relationship with avoidance coping. Academic workloads predicted perceived stress among students. The findings have important implications for students in higher education and highlight the importance of counseling in the
higher education institutions which in turn may help improve their academic performance. Key words: Perceived Stress, Academic workloads, Coping strategies, University students Title Posttraumatic Growth and Marital Satisfaction after Breast Cancer: Patient and Spouse Perspective Author Kausar R., & Saghir, S. Issue 1 Impact Factor/HEC approved category Y Category, ISSN: Year of Publication 2010 Volume 8 Pages 3-17 Publication Website link/journal Abstract Pakistan Journal of Clinical and Social Psychology The present study examined posttraumatic growth (PTG) and marital satisfaction after the onset of breast cancer in patients and their spouses. It was hypothesized that patients and spouse differ in posttraumatic growth and marital satisfaction. The sample comprised 60 participants including equal number of patients and their spouses. Sample was recruited from a local hospital which offers specialization in oncology. Posttraumatic growth inventory (PTGI, Tedeschi & Galhoun, 2005) and the Dyadic Adjustment Inventory (DAI, Spanier, 1975) were translated in Urdu and used for assessment. Analysis revealed that patients scored significantly higher on PTG compared to their spouses. Patients also showed significantly higher marital satisfaction compared to their
spouses. Positive relationship was found between posttraumatic growth and marital satisfaction. Finding of the present study highlight significance of post-cancer growth of the patients and spouses which is associated with marital satisfaction. Counseling services provided to patients and family can foster optimism, which in turn may facilitate effective coping with cancer. Keywords: Posttraumatic growth, marital satisfaction, breast cancer, spouse Title Psychological Effects of Terror Attacks on Children: Acute Stress Symptoms. Author Kausar, R., & Kanwal, S. Issue 2 Impact Factor/HEC approved category Y Category, ISSN: Year of Publication 2010 Volume 37 Pages Publication Website link/journal Abstract Indian Journal of Clinical Psychology The present study was conducted to examine psychological implications of terrorism for children, in particular acute stress symptoms were examined following terror attacks on the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) s building in Lahore. It was hypothesized that children are likely to experience acute stress symptoms subsequent to the terror attacks. Sample of fifty children was recruited from the Sacred Heart School situated adjacent to the FIA building,
Lahore. Acute Stress Symptoms checklist (Adams, 2006) was used for assessment and individual assessment was carried out by the researcher at the premises of school. Majority of the children scored above cut off scores on acute stress symptoms. There were gender differences in acute stress symptoms. Girls experienced significantly more acute stress symptoms compared to boys. There was negative relationship between age and acute stress symptoms. Findings have important implications for provision of psychological intervention for school children who are exposed to traumatic event such as terrorism. Keywords: Terrorism, Acute stress symptoms, Children Title Stress Appraisal and Psychological well being of Medical Professional working in emergency Units Author Kausar, R., & Khan A. Q. Issue 2 Impact Factor/HEC approved category Y category, ISSN: Year of Publication 2010 Volume 20 Pages Publication Website link/journal Abstract Journal of Behavioural Sciences The present study investigated stress appraisal and psychological distress in medical professionals working in emergency units in different teaching hospitals in Lahore. It was hypothesized that there is relationship between
stress appraisal and psychological distress in medical professionals dealing with emergency units. Sample comprised of 51 medical professionals (doctors and nurses), working and emergency units and were recruited from three major teaching hospitals in Lahore. General health questionnaire (GHQ, Goldberg & William, 1978) and Stress Appraisal Measure (SAM, Peacock & Wong, 1990) were used for assessment. Assessment was carried out at the premises of respective hospitals. Health professionals appraised working in emergency units as stressful and challenging and were experiencing psychological distress. Nurses appraised working in emergency units significantly more threatening and experienced more anxiety compared to doctors. Findings have very important implications for provision of Psychological intervention for the hospital staff dealing with causalities. Keywords: Stress appraisal, Psychological distress, Medical professionals, Emergency units.
