2 What can Age UK Notts offer you? Age UK Nottingham & Nottinghamshire (or Age UK Notts for short) is the largest independent local charity providing direct services and support for older people from all communities and backgrounds across Nottingham & Nottinghamshire. We aim to enhance the quality of life and promote the well-being of older people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Age UK Notts has a long history of supporting older people stretching back to Age UK Notts works in partnership with the national charity, Age UK, which was formed by the joining of Age Concern England and Help the Aged. We are part of a family of over 300 Age UKs and Age Concerns across the country. What can we offer you? You can access a range of flexible support tailored to your individual needs and circumstances. All our staff and volunteers are fully vetted, insured and CRB (police) checked. Our services are independent, impartial and confidential. Many of our services are provided free of charge. Where we do make a charge we may be able to assist you to access funding from your local authority. Membership By becoming a member you will have access to a broad range of free and subsidised activities to enable you to make new friends and enjoy life. You will also receive deals and discounts at local restaurants, garages, tourist attractions, gyms, etc. You will receive a monthly bulletin to let you know what activities you can take up. You will also receive a fantastic quarterly magazine packed with informative articles, exciting competitions and lots more. You can get involved with guided walks, Nordic walking, dancing, coffee mornings, lunches, trips and holidays, singing, Scrabble, training opportunities, swimming lessons and crafts, to name but a few!
3 We have an experienced team of staff on hand to support you and provide encouragement and motivation as you seek to access all that membership offers. For more information contact us on Help at Home If you could do with some help at home with things like cleaning, gardening, laundry, shopping and home maintenance, we have a team of staff who can help. You may need help with a one-off task or may need a few hours help every week. We also have a team of volunteers who could provide regular visits to you at home, particularly if you are lonely, frail or housebound. Our visiting service has been awarded the mentoring and befriending Approved Provider Standard national quality mark. Contact us on for more information. Day services You can use our network of day care services across the city and county. At our centres you will find a warm and friendly environment and you can take part in a wide variety of activities, gentle exercise and games, as well as having a hot nutritious meal. You can use our door to door transport via our specially adapted minibuses which can also safely transport you if you use a wheelchair. We provide specialist day services for older people suffering from dementia and we can cater for individuals who are disabled or physically frail. We also provide respite breaks for carers at our day centres. As well as day care you can also join our range of lunch groups, coffee mornings and social gatherings where you can meet up with others to enjoy company and a meal. 4 Age UK Bathing range One of life s great pleasures is relaxing in a hot bath, or easing away aches with a steaming shower, so even if you re worried about slipping or getting out, the Age UK Bathing ++ range will have something for you. Contact us on for more information. Carers We recognise that some people look after a loved one 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To help carers in this important role we have a team of staff who can look after the cared-for person to give the carer a well-deserved break. Contact us on for more information. Information & Advice You can contact us if you need information and advice on a whole range of subjects relevant to the needs of people in later life and to those who are caring for older friends, partners and relatives. We can help you to access all your benefit entitlements, we can also help you with issues such as sorting out gas and electricity bills, finding the right aids and adaptations, obtaining care at home or in care homes. You can also arrange a free Money Advice Session with our trained Money Adviser who can help with everything from budgeting to saving, credit and borrowing, mortgages, insurance, pensions and retirement planning. We can explain money matters in an easy to understand way and, because the service is truly impartial, our Money Advisers won t recommend any products. You can also contact us to obtain a wide range of free Age UK information guides and factsheets covering all sorts of issues such as managing your money, care homes, health services, care at home and much more. You can talk to one of our fully trained members of staff or volunteers on the telephone, attend one of our drop-in sessions or we can visit you at home if you have mobility problems. Contact us on for more information. Men in Sheds Men in Sheds is an exciting new project for older men in Nottinghamshire, based on the very successful Australian Men s Shed movement. If you are an older man you can put your practical skills to good use and learn new skills. You can also make new friends over a cup of tea at our well equipped workshop in Blidworth. 5 Advocacy At certain times in our life we all need support and representation, someone to be our voice. We all need someone to listen. Worried or concerned and feel you have nowhere else to turn? Please contact our free, confidential and independent Advocacy Service - we are here to help you. We can provide support, information, representation, someone to discuss any concerns or questions, someone to discuss a difficult decision with and someone to speak on your behalf to others (e.g. social workers, housing department, health officials etc). Our Advocacy Service has been awarded the national advocacy Quality Performance Mark. Contact us on for more information. Wills Do you have a will in place? If the answer is no, we can help you get a basic will written free of charge by local solicitors. Not having a will in place can result in legal and financial difficulties for your family. Contact us on for more information. Funeral Plan The Age UK Guaranteed Funeral Plan allows you to pre-pay for a cremation funeral at today s prices. If you re aged 50 or over, acceptance to the plan is guaranteed. Contact us on Housing Do you want advice on maintaining your property or information about possible financial assistance? If you live in Nottingham City our Housing Matters team can help you stay safely and independently in your own home. Our home improvement team can offer you advice on repairing and maintaining your property, help with funding options for works, property surveys, schedules of repair, project management and the supervision of contracts. Our Home Safety team can visit you at home to give you comprehensive advice including home safety checks, security checks and support to access things like smoke alarms, grab rails, padlocks and window alarms. 6 Counselling If you are feeling unhappy or distressed, counselling may help you. Your feelings may be due to past or present experiences such as abuse, bereavement, loneliness, life changing events, difficult memories, childhood, relationships with relatives or spiritual issues. Our Counselling Service offers you the chance to meet with a trained person to talk about these things. We are a member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy.
